To ask what the quality of primark kids clothes is really like

SodOffCovid · 17/07/2020 07:13

I'm not being a snob, I've never had a primark near me. I usually get my boys clothes in the next or h&m sales to keep costs down. I can now get to a primark though, hoorah, and the prices are obviously quite good although compared to sale prices elsewhere only marginally cheaper for things like jeans. Is the quality OK? Do they wash alright? And last?

Pretty much the same as h&m to be honest. Absolutely fine for younger kids who are probably only going to get a year's worth of wear at the most out of the clothes.

Twotinydictators · 17/07/2020 07:22

I always find the quality to be really good and my DCs outgrow before it wears out. I've sent Primark clothing to the bootsale after a good year of wear. I've dressed DD8 and DS4 in Primark clothes since they were babies and have absolutely no complaints. In fact, I splashed out on a pair of Ted Baker pj's at Christmas for DD and they already have a hole in the leg (although she did love them and wear them frequently)!

Fatted · 17/07/2020 07:22

I wasn't impressed. The choice of stuff for boys is woeful. Everything in kids stuff is generally cut small and not good for tall skinny kids like mine. Sizing is also inconsistent. I bought two t-shirts for DS1 in the same size. I couldn't get one over his head and the other one was huge.

These are problems across adults and kids clothes with Primark. I don't shop in there much for myself but wouldn't dare buy anything without trying on three different sizes in the shop first. For similar prices, the supermarkets are much better quality and more consistent with sizing.

Merename · 17/07/2020 07:22

I think the quality is poor, they don’t last, don’t wash well, and are sized small.

londonrach · 17/07/2020 07:22

Great for kids who outgrow the clothes quickly.

fairyfingers · 17/07/2020 07:25

The sizing is a bit skimpy but my dds are long and thin so that works in our favour. Haven't seen a massive difference in quality between them and H&M/supermarkets.

FedUpofLockdown123 · 17/07/2020 07:27

A lot of the stuff is small made but I actually find the quality ok. The only thing I don't recommend is the £1.80 t-shirts as they shrink after the first wash. I agree the sizing can be inconsistent I went yesterday and bought my daughter a couple of tops in similar styles but one of them I had to buy in a bigger size to the others as it was much smaller made.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/07/2020 07:27

Sizing can be funny. But some stuff is brilliant. Pyjamas are good. Character stuff if they have the license for your child's obsession.

A lot of the 'younger' girls stuff is mini teenager.

Toomanycats99 · 17/07/2020 07:35

I find it ok. I'd say more so than adult clothing which I find really mixed quality

Definitely comes up on the small side.

NellePorter · 17/07/2020 07:38

Variable I think. Pyjamas wear and wash well.

Monkeynuts18 · 17/07/2020 07:38

I’ve only tried their baby stuff but it comes up small, washes badly and loses its shape/colours fade, and the stitching is bad.

MondeoFan · 17/07/2020 07:39

It's hit and miss, bought DD a mermaid tee, print faded after 1st wash, bought leggings there, had them couple years, no different to kids leggings from another store.

GivenchyDahhling · 17/07/2020 07:41

The only things I've ever bought were some vests when I was pregnant, they were OK, but did not wash well and well rough and cheap - compared to M&S and John Lewis which seem new again after being washed. False economy IMO. I can't speak for the other clothes though.

AriettyHomily · 17/07/2020 07:44

Sainsbury's is better imo, H&M on par. Primark seems to suit skinny kids which is good for mine. The quality isn't great but mine grow out of them quickly.

It's really difficult to find 'tween' stuff that isn't cropped, no shouldered, stupid slogans. It was good for basic leggings / t shirts when they were smaller. There was a pack of knickers in there age 9-10 with a picture of a cat and the slogan 'pretty pussy'. I complained about those.

The adult stuff is totally shite.

EssentialHummus · 17/07/2020 07:45

Some of the styles are a bit "mini teenager" as a PP said, but quality wise I find them OK. I occasionally also find Primark stuff in bundles I buy off eBay etc and they seem to hold up well despite clearly being worn.

ChaoticCatling · 17/07/2020 07:45

Off topic a bit, but why is it seen as bad for clothes to be on the small size, but the term 'generous' is used when they are too big? I'd much prefer accurate sizing by either average height and other measurements for that age, or just size by height instead of age. I just want the size to match their own size chart really! I have 14 year old who is the height of an average 13 year old, and a 13 can be a perfect fit or huge on him depending on the shop, even though the size chart says he should be that size.

lockdownparty · 17/07/2020 07:47

They're mainly terrible tbh. They won't wash well, the sizing is off, the tshirts are spit through thin and they're just not very nice.

I did have one really good thing from there that lasted and it was a toy story joggers and jumper outfit.

Had some lovely rainbow baby clothes from there. DS’s skin flared up every time he wore them, even after a few washes. That was 10 years ago. Tried him with some T shirts recently -same thing on a striped one first time of wearing (but better after washing) but ok on grey marl. I’d be cautious of bright colours and wash them a few times before wearing.

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 17/07/2020 07:54

I have a very skinny 7 year old and I always find anything they do without an adjustable waist drops off her. But the rate she destroys clothes (active sporty, mountain biker prone to tanking it) they are cheap and wash well.

Sometimes I find bits a bit overpriced for the quality but mostly they are excellent. As others have said pjs wash well. Their sizing is accurate mostly and they do some beautiful "dressy" bits that are very jojo in style.

I hate this. I have a very tall and very naive nearly 12 year old. He wears age 14 clothes, but really does not want to look like he’s off clubbing (he’d probably still wear his Fireman Sam t shirt if it was big enough!).
CoodleMoodle · 17/07/2020 08:00

I've dressed both DD and DS in Primark since they were born, and never had a problem. From experience I always buy the next size up but the quality is fine and it lasts and washes perfectly well. They also have clothes from supermarkets and other shops and there's no real difference between those and Primark.

I wear a lot of Primark as well and have had some stuff for years and years. Underwear (including socks and vests) and PJs are particularly good. DD is 6 and she loves it because she can pick something out that she really likes and I normally yes because of the price!

cliffdiver · 17/07/2020 08:01

I've only ever bought knickers and leggings.

The elastic went on the knickers after a couple of washes and the leggings went bobbly very quickly.

Haven't bought anything since.

My boys nearly 4 and people have bought him gifts from primark before. They've all been stone washed skinny jeans and black slogan jumpers etc. I'm afraid he wears them once for a picture to say thank you and never wears them again.
