Lockdown toothache ruining my life

BippertyBopperty · 16/07/2020 23:52

I have a lower molar growing sideways into the back of another tooth, I’ve been told (months ago before lockdown) that it needs removing at the dental hospital because it will be a bitch to remove basically. Will need gum and tooth cut into pieces etc.

Problem is, it really, really, really bloody hurts now. Dentist says it’s pulpitis not an infection so antibiotics won’t work. Painkillers aren’t touching it. I need it removed at hospital.
Hospital say they can’t see me because of a huge backlog. So what do I do? I honestly feel like I’m going insane and right now it’s ruining my life.

My AIBU is AIBU to spend most of the last 3 days in tears and agony? I don’t know how to make it stop and no one will help me.

Its just cruel to leave people in this much pain

Have you tried the usual remedies? Liberal amounts of clove oil, ice to numb, orajel extra strength, naproxen works well on toothache (its anti inflammatory) but you can also combine cocodamol and a ibruprofen and codeine medication to get a good amount of codiene in your system.

NoMoreMuchin · 17/07/2020 00:12

That sounds so, so awful. There is no pain like toothache IME.

I once took a friend to AandE with toothache and basically they did the numbing injection to allow them to at least sleep all night and then got them an emergency appointment at the dental hospital. I seem to remember they gave them 4 injections (once every 12 hours over 2 days) to keep the pain at bay until treatment kicked in.

I can see if its not infected its not a priority to treat the tooth, but being in terrible pain must put it higher. You should not be in agony, its ridiculous. Also, I feel your dentist should be fighting harder to get you an emergency appointment.

AuntyPasta · 17/07/2020 00:14

Are you able to pay to have it done privately? Private dental places are open.

Yes, right now I would pay any amount of money to get this out. Would a private dentist place be able to remove such an awkward tooth with sedation? My dentist made it sound only possible at dental hospital.

I am also pregnant so can’t take any of the good drugs. I am alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen but it’s not working at all.

Given that you’re pregnant and in extreme pain I’d get back on to your dentist, your GP and anyone who will listen. You need to be seen as an emergency at the dental hospital. The level of pain you’re in plus the fact that you can’t take heavier painkillers should be emergency enough. I don’t know if a private place would be able to help as it’s a complicated removal and you’re pregnant. You can only ask though.

I’m so sorry you’re suffering with this.

AuntyPasta · 17/07/2020 00:52

Have you tried going through the NHS 111 online or phone service?

BippertyBopperty · 17/07/2020 00:54

@AuntyPasta

Have you tried going through the NHS 111 online or phone service?
Yes 111 told me to see my dentist as did my GP. Dentist basically said he would try and call dental hospital to speed things on but there is no treatment he can offer me. Tooth just needs removing.

Get a second opinion at a private dental practice OP. Pay to have someone look and at least they might be able to suggest something!

Shortfeet · 17/07/2020 01:03

They won’t sedate you if you are pregnant but you can get it out privately. I hope you get it sorted soon

BippertyBopperty · 17/07/2020 01:07

Does anyone know what else they could do? So I could suggest it to my dentist? I will also look privately as well.

Keep on at them OP. My DS was due to have an OP on his teeth in May as he has SEN and has to be put under for any treatment.

Obviously due to lockdown it couldn't happen but as soon as dentists were up and running again I rang them regularly and today they have told us that they have got him an appointment to have it done at the hospital in two weeks time.

We will have to keep him isolated for two weeks, they will do a pre-op over the phone and then 3 days before he will have a covid swab.

Fingers crossed it will finally get done.

You need to make some noise.

Rainingagaininseattle · 17/07/2020 01:16

I would phone private dentists

Thelnebriati · 17/07/2020 01:57

I had a similar tooth removed under sedation, but I manage really well with sedation. It would have cost around £300 to have my dentist remove it privately.
However, the surgery left me with an injury and a huge hole in my jaw, and dry socket which needed weekly treatment for 3 months. Would your NHS dentist do the follow up? And you need to be really careful about keeping the socket clean, and what you eat. I lost a lot of weight and it took a toll on my health.

earsup · 17/07/2020 02:17

I had similar a few years ago and just got tired of the waiting and pain...few dentists wanted to deal with it...I flew to Barcelona and had it out next day for 60 euros...no nonsense !.. Spanish dentists seem more skilled and tackle things UK dentists can't or won't touch.

harisonsmum · 17/07/2020 02:27

Hi op I feel so so sorry for you, I had pulpitis while pregnant with my first child. It’s the most agonising pain ever. It was caused for me by a filling being placed too high. It started on a Sunday night, and I was in tears didn’t get a wink of sleep called dentist first thing Monday morning and he told me to get dressed immediately and get to him. When I got there he said it’s the worst toothache ever and he couldn’t imagine how I had coped with just paracetamol.
Could you go to a&e and explain - they may fast track you. I know it’s unbearable, failing that demand a referral to hospital immediately.
It’s terrible they are letting this go on has severe toothache can cause you immense distress which can’t be good for your body during pregnancy.
Have the dentist even let you try antibiotics as pulpitis can be caused by bacteria too? A tooth that is growing sideways is a nightmare, food can become lodged between the gum and tooth. I would be telling your dentist you want antibiotics and it won’t do any harm to try them. Hopefully they can’t refuse.

avamiah · 17/07/2020 02:31

OMG you do not have to put up with this at all .
Where are you situated OP

Coldemort · 17/07/2020 02:41

I had an abscess last week. Face swelled overnight (looked like beachbaall) so went to A&E. Lovely doctor drained the abscess and told me to call back for an emergency apt. to have the tooth pulled. The doctor told me to emphasise on the phone that the pain was unmanageable, she basically said that if I give any indication that I can cope with it then you're not getting an appointment.

Out of curiosity why do you need to ho to hospital to get it pulled? Mine was done st a NHS dentist.

TOADfan · 17/07/2020 02:53

Definitely go private. I had the same issue with my lower wisdom tooth growing sideways into the tooth in front. My NHS said it would need to be at a dental hospital for the same reasons you gave (cut gum, tooth broke etc) and the waiting list was about 6 months.

I was in the worst pain so my dentist referred me private. £150 and it was done. I couldn't get sedation (refused due to my weight) and honestly other than the tugging sensation and sound it was grand. Didn't hurt at all.

100% go private and don't worry you don't need sedation for it.

avamiah · 17/07/2020 02:53

Coldemort,
Yes my partner had a terrible abscess, rotted tooth and he had it removed under anaesthetic, he was put to sleep while they did it and I know this as I was there as he needed somebody with him for the procedure .
I was with him just before they put him under ( local anaesthetic) and then saw him in recovery about 40 mins later .
He got up and was a bit drowsy but they gave him pain killers and antibiotics incase of any infection .
He was great the next day

Maggie90 · 17/07/2020 03:03

Oh goodness, you have my absolute sympathy. I was terrified of getting an tooth ache whilst pregnant for this exact reason.

Have you got an emergency dentist service where you live? Only reason I ask is, the emergency walk in dentist where we live is the dental hospital. They will only do the treatment that is required to get you out of pain though. Yours seems pretty obvious, tooth needs extracting.

Also, how far along are you? I was so scared of Having a tooth ache during pregnancy I asked dentist what could be done if it happens (I have two wisdom teeth that need removing at dental hospital but have been waiting for an appointment After I gave birth in April). He told me that they are quite wary of doing any dental procedures before 6 months but that the risk is a lot less after that.

vanillandhoney · 17/07/2020 07:28

Hi OP - definitely look at getting it done privately.

My old NHS dentist said my wisdom teeth would need to be removed in hospital as he couldn't do it in the practise.

When I moved I ended up registering with a private dentist. Two of the wisdom teeth he insisted he couldn't extract ended up infected and removed as emergency cases in the dentists chair the same day as my appointment. Took maybe 20 minutes each time.

Honestly, go private. I hope you get it sorted soon as dental pain is horrific Sad

Mary46 · 17/07/2020 09:16

God you poor thing. I had a rotten wisdom removed mid June. Pain desperate at times. I got seen quickly as I paid dental hosp. Is this an option as at least they see you quickly (private).

BippertyBopperty · 17/07/2020 09:42

I’m only 10 weeks. Will they remove the tooth with me being pregnant? I hadn’t even considered that. Sad It was supposed to be done months ago. I am seeing my dentist (again) this afternoon. Hopefully he will do/ suggest something.
