Lockdown toothache ruining my life

BippertyBopperty · 16/07/2020 23:52

I have a lower molar growing sideways into the back of another tooth, I’ve been told (months ago before lockdown) that it needs removing at the dental hospital because it will be a bitch to remove basically. Will need gum and tooth cut into pieces etc.

Problem is, it really, really, really bloody hurts now. Dentist says it’s pulpitis not an infection so antibiotics won’t work. Painkillers aren’t touching it. I need it removed at hospital.
Hospital say they can’t see me because of a huge backlog. So what do I do? I honestly feel like I’m going insane and right now it’s ruining my life.

Mine was removed at the dentist under a local. They didn't ask if there was a possibility I might be pregnant, so presume that makes it ok!

Tini17 · 17/07/2020 14:14

How did you get on OP?
Where are you geographically and which Dental Hospital are you on the waiting list for?

NellePorter · 17/07/2020 14:19

I have a private dentist, root canal treatment delayed from March rescheduled for next month. I am in pain (although not as bad as you, OP), and they say there's nothing they can do as they're too busy.

Thelnebriati · 17/07/2020 14:21

Coldemort Mine had to be done in hospital because the section of jaw they had to remove was next to a nerve. I think its about liability as well as risk.

OneForMeToo · 17/07/2020 14:33

I agree with go private. Dh is having surgery that they would normally refer to the dental hospital so it’s then nhs but there is a 6month plus wait so they are doing it privately next week. Ours is a Bupa dentist so they do nhs referral surgery’s too anyway.

All walk in dental hospitals in london shut years ago to this service...only available one is the whitechapel hospital [ tower block ] and you need to get there at 4 or 5 am as only limited slots...its full up by 6 am...awful situation here in uk with dentistry now.

follygirl · 17/07/2020 14:48

Please be really careful about taking pain meds for a long time. I've just found out that a friend who had been taking nurofen for about 6 weeks, also due to toothache has just found out that her kidneys have been affected so badly that their functionality is only 30%. She's obviously stopped taking the meds and is praying that her kidneys will improve. It's so scary.

Geraniumblue · 17/07/2020 14:48

How do you go private with a tooth extraction? I have a wisdom tooth that possibly needs to go. I have a dentist appointment for next week to have it looked at, but I think it will need to be extracted.

OneForMeToo · 17/07/2020 14:57

If your with a nhs dentist that also does private work just ask them if it is something you can pay privately for them to do. If your not you would need to contact a private dentist and ask them.

Geraniumblue · 17/07/2020 15:01

Thanks! Fed up with nagging tooth pain. I just want rid.

Widdendream77 · 17/07/2020 15:03

Hi, dentist here, if it is pulpitis it may be possible that your own dentist can numb you up and just extirpate the tooth which is like doing the first bit of root canal to remove the nerve and dress to get you out of pain until the extraction can be done at the hospital. Worth asking and is what I’d consider in this situation if access ok ( and if they’ve got all the ppe that allows them to drill- which not all practices have yet).

Wejustdontknow · 17/07/2020 15:59

Oh my goodness I do feel for you, I currently have a cracked wisdom tooth, pain started on Sunday, saw emergency dentist on Wednesday who wants to try filling it rather than removing as looks very tricky, was told couldn’t be done there and then so to book another appointment, receptionist then tried to offer me an appointment for September 😱 luckily there was a dentist in the reception who said I couldn’t be left in this pain and that he would do it on his lunch break but couldn’t do it until next Wednesday so I am on the countdown. I am alternating between codeine and ibuprofen every two hours and using way more than advised orajel and it still isn’t keeping on top of the pain, go see a pharmacist for the strongest pain relief you can get and phone the dentists every day if needed until they give you a resolution. Toothache is the worst pain I have ever had

monotata · 17/07/2020 16:03

@BippertyBopperty

If you’re pregnant I’m not sure you can be sedated.

I had a wisdom tooth taken out when I was 27 weeks pregnant and couldn’t have sedation.

Honestly I’d go to your dentist and refuse to leave until you’re seen.

Mary46 · 17/07/2020 16:39

Feel for anyone in this pain. Geranium she refer me on as rotten wisdom just took my xray with me. So glad its out!! Op hope u get sorted soon

AuntyPasta · 17/07/2020 18:55

I hope you’ve gotten some help Thanks

Foliageeverywhere122 · 17/07/2020 18:59

Omg I could have written this Flowers

My wisdom tooth is also sideways, will need jaw bone removed to get out and is destroying the tooth next it. I’m keeping it as clean as poss but apparently the root itself is crumbling as impacted teeth often start to digest themselves. I’ve been told an oral surgeon needs to do it rather than a dental surgeon as it’s so complex 😫

I’ve been looking into private which would be around £1800. Not an option for me, but maybe you could consider?

Foliageeverywhere122 · 17/07/2020 19:02

Sorry just saw your updates! Look at your local spire or BUPA, they have oral/maxfax surgeons as well as dental surgeons. If you put in a request someone generally calls you the next day!

Inkanta · 17/07/2020 19:03

You poor love. I would think you warrant an Emergency appointment now and emergency treatment via your own dentist Tell them that the pain is now unbearable. I don't sense they are not classifying your problem as chronic.

Inkanta · 17/07/2020 19:06

As someone upthread said the dentist could at least remove the nerve - which is a relatively quick procedure.

Hi all is there anyone who could give me advice ... I’ve had on /off toothache on and off since mid May .... I’m a nurse and it felt like familiar pain and as I’m so Covid scared took some old antibiotics I had but it quickly came back .... contact my nhs dentist first week of June and the gave 4 days amoxicillin... bit better but then started up again with neck ache mild headache and tooth ( but I can’t identify which upper right it is ...) dentist spoke to me gave another 7 days amoxicillin... it improved only abit for fortnight and I was on a list to be seen ... all came back again given flagyl and seen dentist 3 times now .... XR does not show abscess that she can see .... the toothache comes and goes but I have neck pain mild sore throat that side and now foul foul taste in mouth but not sore in the mouth ... I’m back on metronidazole again and since last lot pain at weekend ,can put teeth together as if something somewhere has burst but it hurts still with random pain and taste etc ... a referral has gone in to max fax for ct but I don’t think I can wait much longer ... feel generallyunwell and it responds each time to abx but Not so much this time ... terrified of Covid due to medical history etc but not sure what else to do to get help ... any thoughts advice anyone ?
