To spike my garden

Because of cats (I am a cat owner myself)

Name changed because combined with my other posts, info about problem neighbour could be outing..

Honest to god it’s really starting to get me down now.

My neighbour won’t neuter his cats, I dread to think how many are inside, the female is on heat every few months and the street is absolutely overrun with entire Tom cats now and they are really giving me the fucking rage.

It wasn’t too bad at first when it was just the one Tom, they are breeding and there’s now at least six entire toms I see (and hear) regularly!

A huge tray of violas binned after they constantly dug them up and left crap all over the top of them, a dead hebe from spraying it, dead herbs from spraying, sometimes I come downstairs and my whole downstairs heaves of cat urine where they have sprayed the front door.
Pooing on top of clumps of flowers, I’ve just seen one of them has pooed on top of yet more of my flowers and then scratched the shit out of the surrounding plants shredding them and no, they weren’t trying to hide the poo.
It’s sat right there in the middle as a clear territory marker 😡😡😡

I deliberately left patches of bare earth all over my garden specifically so the cats could toilet away from my flowers!!

My garden is their favourite haunt and I’m starting to feel like giving up trying to make it nice as they are just ruining it.

Am I allowed to put varying heights of cocktail stick/bamboo skewer all amongst my plants or am I going to be punished if one of the bastards lands on one and injures itself?

I can’t really cat proof it’s my front garden so ‘open’ massive fences and cat mesh will look really odd
😖

They hate the smell of citrus, i bought a citrus smelling gel especially to stop them pooing in my flower bed and they never came back again i only applied it a few times.
It wor

Silent Roar is very effective, but only in relatively ' clean' areas. Before you sprinkle it you have to remove any poo, plus some of the surrounding soil, and anything wee-soaked, and disinfect anything that has been sprayed.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/07/2020 21:54

The problems only going to get worse without tackling the source.

Snooper22 · 16/07/2020 22:04

Cucumbers! Cats hate them, I've just bought some foam ones for my front garden.

Felifox · 16/07/2020 22:07

Please do not put spikes on the fence, my neighbours put these on a wall above my head height and they got knocked into the bushes. When I went to trim them I not only trod on the blasted things which I could feel with ridged soled shoes but they hurt my hands, even though I had thick gloves on.

Having numbers of unneutered cats is both anti social and detrimental to their welfare. I would start by complaining to the EHO at your LA about the health issues and to Cats Protection League about the welfare issues. This is the cat I had from a litter born in a car park in 2001, and I've always had one or two cats.

Jeyes fluid is toxic to animals. The poster who suggested it may not be aware that it is a poison, not just to cats, but to wildlife.

k1233 · 16/07/2020 22:22

Get some motion activated sprinklers - a couple with good pressure. You get a double benefit of getting rid of the cats and watering your garden.

Yes I knew this and have never and would never use it.
I don’t even have plastic in my garden!
All natural materials (unless I end up buying this spiked mat..)

Magicpaintbrush · 16/07/2020 22:29

Get a massive dog. Nothing else will work.

Tarrarra · 16/07/2020 22:30

You can use olbas oil on the teabag rather than jeyes. It was the only thing that deterred my neighbour’s cat from pooping outside my front door!

Fanthorpe · 16/07/2020 22:30

Crikey there’s a whole world of online arty-Barry between cat lovers and gardeners over the Jeyes fluid issue, even on the Gardeners World forum!
I’ve never used it as it makes me think of outside toilets, but I didn’t realise it was poisonous!

Fanthorpe · 16/07/2020 22:31

Arty-Barry?????? Argy Bargy obvs

Midsommar · 16/07/2020 22:54

OP I own a spayed female and it makes me furious that there are STILL negligent cat owners out there who refuse to take any sort of responsibility Angry

Not sure if it would do any damage to your plants but have you tried spraying them with lemon juice? Most cats hate the smell of citrus so this may work. My grandma used mothballs too as again the cats are said to hate the smell. Good luck!

islockdownoveryet · 16/07/2020 22:55

I'm a cat lover but it pisses me off when people have multiple cats and let them breed . I've a neighbour with loads of cats and they are feral things which literally will shit on the drive .
Honestly I thought cats did there business in mud but these cats aren't bothered, they are out in all weathers too . Fortunately cats don't come in my garden as my cat is often in the garden this time of year and miaows and any that dare to darken my garden .
Some good advice on here but nothing that would hurt them even if they are annoying you . I've heard the orange peel and tin foil before let me know if it works.

CuntingToms · 16/07/2020 23:38

11.35pm and I can still hear one of the toms yowling 😖
It’s been on and off all day.
I know which one it is, it’s pacing right outside my bedroom window currently.
I try not to get too bothered about it but I’ve actually had an immensely stressful day today and really exhausted and need sleep.
I’m debating whether to call cats protection actually and report them as stray toms.

yetanotherweasley · 16/07/2020 23:40

@CuntingToms can you not catch him and take him to the vets in the morning. If he's not chipped they will refer to rescue x

CuntingToms · 16/07/2020 23:45

I’m just so fed up of it.
I just don’t understand the mentality of nightmare neighbour.
I know cats do yowl but they must be in a near constant state of stress.
It is on/off all day most days, i’ll regularly look outside and i’ll see actual fighting or two intimidating each other or one walking behind another following them to cause a fight.
Will cats protection actually do something?
I don’t want traps on my property as neighbour will know it’s me that called!

How do I do it without getting caught?

OP posts:
yetanotherweasley · 16/07/2020 23:49

Presuming you have a car just pop him in a carrier and pop him in the car. If they know you have a cat they wouldn't necessarily know it's not yours

Iwantedtrianglesnotsquares · 17/07/2020 00:06

We used mirror tiles to scare the cats away. It surprisingly worked. We just put one propped up against a pot of the fence where they used to poo in our garden, and they stopped doing it. Luckily! Far to many cats in our neighbouring houses who used our garden as a toilet.

BigMaryloo · 17/07/2020 00:15

We had problems with cat using our flat roof extension as a litter tray. Put the amazon spike mats round the edge, it only jumped on it once, never came back 👍🏻 money well spent.

chocolatespiders · 17/07/2020 00:20

Could you contact local rescue as they should be keen to get them neutered and may trap them

CuntingToms · 17/07/2020 00:22

I may try.
I’m still awake.
It’s still yowling!

OP posts:
FrenchBoule · 17/07/2020 00:28

Garden hose or water gun preferably with high water pressure.
Shoo them loudly everytime you see them, scream like a banshee if you like.
Throw the objects towards them to scare them.

I would also notify the animal protection people as your neighbour is not a responsible animal owner

LovelyBranches · 17/07/2020 00:35

I bought fence spikes from eBay. They are plastic and they couldn’t penetrate the skin but would be uncomfortable to stand on. I only put them on top of the 10ft fence posts (one side of my garden is raised) that the cats used to sit on. The cats can still get into my garden and they walk around on top of the fence, but they no longer see it as their territory and now they don’t foul in my garden.

My mother in law has had great success with realistic looking toy snakes in the garden.
