To think that slim people have different habits re food and exercise

I've been overweight most of my adult life, and find I put on weight very easily. BUT I also think I have had very unhealthy food habits - I think of food as treats, I avoid the scales, I eat when I'm not hungry, I always have the cake, emotional eating etc. I know all the things I do wrong (and that I'm sure a lot of overweight people do) but what I want to know is what do thin people do "right". i.e. what are the habits of people who are consistently a healthy weight (i.e. BMI of 20-25).

I've got some very petite friends who will do things like:

  • weigh every day and take immediate action if their weight goes up by more than 5lbs;
  • never accept a biscuit
  • only drink one glass of wine (unless its a very special occasion when they may have two)
  • never order themselves a dessert/ice cream etc (will just eat whatever their kids leave)
- exercise 5-6 days a week without fail, including Christmas Day
  • never have seconds

If you're slender, and have maintained a healthy weight for years, what habits do you have that you think help you?

I’m in my 20s, 5ft 5 and weigh anywhere between 7st 12 and 8st 4. My BMI is 18.5-19. I’m pretty slim but I eat fairly unhealthily (takeaways, fast food, some snacking etc., I also do shift work) and do very little exercise. I really think I am slim by luck and genetics rather than design, my family are mainly small and slim without much effort and I have always been thin. The only thing I would say does contribute is pretty much never eating breakfast (Not starving myself or anything, I’m just not hungry 😂). I lose weight very easily and find it hard to put it back on- when I had a cold for a week over Christmas I lost nearly a stone. Sorry I don’t have any good habits for you, only bad ones 😂

Thought I’d have a go at answering these to like some previous posters

  • weigh every day and take immediate action if their weight goes up by more than 5lbs; I probably weigh myself once every few months, I probably would take action though if my weight went up by that much
  • never accept a biscuit I eat biscuits most days and can and have scoffed a whole packet in one go
  • only drink one glass of wine (unless its a very special occasion when they may have two) I don’t drink wine but I do have 1-2 glasses of gin per week
  • never order themselves a dessert/ice cream etc (will just eat whatever their kids leave) I very rarely have a dessert but that’s because I don’t really like them, I’d much rather (and do) have seconds of savoury stuff instead
  • exercise 5-6 days a week without fail, including Christmas Day I rarely exercise although I do a fair amount of walking
  • never have seconds sometimes, but usually the portion I do myself is big enough so that I don’t need seconds

I'm just under 9st and 5ft7. I fully acknowledge I don't eat properly but I also can't imagine eating more. I think I just see food as a means to survival
