To apply for a job where I dont meet all the criteria?

It's an internal promotion. Job spec is similar to my current role, but bigger projects and some line management responsibility (which I've never had before).

I completely feel like I could do it, and lockdown has made my current role so much quieter than usual and it's made me desperate for a new challenge. However, there are a list of criteria to apply and I dont meet 2 out of 8.

AIBU to apply anyway? Has anybody ever managed to wrangle a promotion without meeting all the criteria? I dont want to waste anyone time!

You've got nothing to loose, go for it

tipperari · 14/07/2020 22:06

Definitely apply OP, what's the worst that can happen, you don't get the job and you're no worse off. If you don't apply you'll always wonder what if 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ravenclawgirl · 14/07/2020 22:07

Apply anyway.

I read an article about why men are more likely to get better jobs than women and one of the reasons was that if a man looks at a list of criteria and meets one of them he applies. If a woman reads a list of criteria and meets all but one she doesn't apply. I know I am guilty of this.

lukasiak · 14/07/2020 22:07

Go for it. The worst that can happen is that they say thanks, but no thanks. For things you don't have experience on just lead with the "never encountered X but if I did I would've handled it by Y".

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 14/07/2020 22:08

Do it. Men do it all the time.

Duckduckduck123 · 14/07/2020 22:09

No harm in trying, worst that happens is you don't get it!

altiara · 14/07/2020 22:10

Definitely! And if you don’t get it, at least you can flag up development ideas

leftovercoffeecake · 14/07/2020 22:10

Go for it OP! You’ve got nothing to lose.
Others going for the job won’t necessarily meet the 8/8.

SunflowerOwl · 14/07/2020 22:12

@Ravenclawgirl jeez, that is mad but actually makes sense!

These responses are more positive than I thought, thanks Smile

I did just that 3 years ago and got the job. Been promoted again since and completed two relevant courses to give me the skills I need. Go for it and good luck!!

SepticTankYank · 14/07/2020 22:15

Depends on what you're lacking and how quickly that can be picked up.

If you can show drive and willing then they may overlook what you lack knowing it will come in time. It will make people notice you within the company.

However, you must tell your line manager. To not do so would be sneaky.

I've seen internal candidates get pulled back to their old department because they cannot lose them even though they are the best candidate.

"Do it. Men do it all the time."

Yawn. Do you check every job applicaiton submitted in the country?

dooratheexplorer · 14/07/2020 22:18

Go for it.

I've just been interviewing for an NHS role and I don't think any applicant hit 6 out of 8 on the person spec. The standard of applications was dreadful.

Toomanycats99 · 14/07/2020 22:23

I went to a womens mentoring session and they basically said if you could do the whole job when you started it it was the wrong one! You should spend the first few weeks / months crapping yourself!

Longdistance · 14/07/2020 22:26

Go for it!
In for a penny, in for a pound! Honestly, just give it a go. 🤞🏼

SecretSpAD · 14/07/2020 22:26

Yes, go for it.

So,stokes you've just got to take a chance. I did years ago - applying for a job that I really didn't have the experience for but was willing to work my arse off to get that experience and I got it.

It's something that women tend to get hung up on rather than man in my experience.

ChateauMargaux · 14/07/2020 22:27

Think of examples of where you have modeled the behaviours that are required even if you have no direct experience... eg. No direct experience of managing people but maybe you have managed part of projects which involved other people, have you any experience outside of work you could talk about, talk about how your interpersonal skills would help with this and that it is the next logical step. ..

Plan your answers and be confident that you will be the best person for the job..

RonnieBob · 14/07/2020 22:28

I did this a few months ago and got the job.
Go for it.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 14/07/2020 22:31

As long as it doesn't say something along the lines of "Must have 3 years managerial experience" and the other criteria isn't a necessary qualification you don't possess, then go for it.

Tobebythesea · 14/07/2020 22:33

Yes, most men wouldn’t even query it.

SymbollocksInteractionism · 14/07/2020 22:33

Definitely go for it!

FenellaVelour · 14/07/2020 22:34

I’ve done it and got the job.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 14/07/2020 22:34

I did this for a move to a new company, I didn't meet several parts of the essential job spec but they must have like me as I've received training to fill the gaps and been promoted.

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/07/2020 22:34

I remember reading a study that claimed that women on average apply for jobs where they met at least 80% of the requirements (and men when they met 40%).

KitKat1985 · 14/07/2020 22:34

What are the criteria you don't meet? If it's needing a certain qualification or professional membership you might be wasting your time, but if it's more minor things then it's always worth a shot.
