Masks - GET A GRIP.

Ok.

So. Lots of whinging about masks at the moment as BoJo finally hauls his arse into gear and says that you have to wear them in the shops and on public transport.

In Catalunya where I live masks are obligatory. Every time you are in public. Including in the street. Inside and out. The exceptions are

Medical conditions (you need a paper justifying this)
When playing sport
Children under the age of 6
If eating or drinking

If you don't comply - 100 euro fine. No arguments.

Most people here were already wearing masks anyway (because we saw the horror at the beginning of the pandemic here and we know what a real lockdown is like - not allowed out at all, children locked inside for nearly 3 months, etc)

People arent whining and complaining nor imagining how they can invent aome excuse to mean that the rules don't apply to them and the overwhelming majority of people are wearing them all the time.

Tourists not so much but they getting fined. Good.

So England. PLEASE. Stop with the selfishness. Literally dozens of countries have mandatory mask wearing and citizens comply because they care about each other and don't spend their time acting entitled and "I'm all right Jack"

There are articles in the European press about this. Literally "English people are selfish - is it any wonder they are so resistant to wear masks". It's embarrassing. As a nation, as a society, it's time to grow up and just put the mask on like everyone else.

English people. You aren't special. You are starting to look like the kid who gets thw whole class detention because they just keep on breaking the rules.

Wear the mask. Please. It's for the safety of everyone.

And if you ABSOLUTELY MUST come to Spain on holiday, even more so.

Don’t worry about it OP - people in England will comply once the mandate comes in. And those who can’t wear a face covering will either be excluded from shops or will brave it hoping not to be challenged by busybodies.

I'm British but live in Europe in a country that made face masks mandatory right at the start. I really can't see the Brits complying well.

ASundayWellSpent · 14/07/2020 17:36

Waves from Catalunya Smile

I find it incredible that we are under such strict rules over what we can do in our own homes, outdoors, who we can meet, wearing masks all the time no matter where or who with etc... Yet planes full of people are arriving from abroad every day? I live in the flight path of a very small airport, and its like ryanair air motor way day in and day out...

goldfinchfan · 14/07/2020 17:39

I am currently ashamed of being British.

To those who do not want to wear a mask I say:
Wear a fucking mask......you might even be saving lives.
or don't you want to do that?

TeacupDrama · 14/07/2020 17:40

I wear a mask in shops as I'm in Scotland, I don't like them and moan a bit we are allowed rants on all sorts of things on mumsnet, the science isn't that solid just a balance of probability that it might help other people more than wearer it is not a magic bullet. I have commented on this elsewhere

I'm a retired dentist so have worn masks for ages, I only wore them while actually treating patients, I didn't wear one when discussing treatment or once treatment finished and discussing after care more appointments etc for the simple reason that masks greatly inhibit communication. Patients need to see your face 16% of the population ( not a tiny minority) have some hearing loss, speaking face to face is best for hearing, any barrier inhibits sounds and muffles it, masks perspex sheeting visors but you can lip read through perspex, most partially deaf people rely on a degree of lip reading. Sound travels best forwards, this is why you are less likely to hear someone calling you from behind, if you want someone with their back towards you to hear you need to shout. People automatically turn towards sound so if sitting side by side they turn their heads.

As masks muffle sound it requires people to do one of two things

  1. speak louder this means air is expelled faster from lungs and travels further, the reason singing is discouraged
  2. they come closer in order to hear better, no one has ever said that being closer with masks is better than social distancing

Already I have seen numerous shop assistant step around perspex screens so client can hear them and they can hear client,
Deafness is already an ignored and forgotten disability and this just makes it even worse,
Many people are already frazzled by covid and the stresses and making extra effort for the deaf just doesn't happen, I kind of understand but it makes a socially inhibiting disability even worse, partial deafness often starts around age 50 so they haven't learnt sign language ( like those deaf from birth do) as they hear most things if speaker is plain and in front of them with no background music

Lollipity · 14/07/2020 17:40

Yes. Get a grip. I'm a UK citizen living abroad and I am wearing one as I type in a taxi. You get used to it. Stop moaning and just wear it.

goldfinchfan · 14/07/2020 17:40

But we do need to checking people coming into the country too......we don't do that why not?
Is it money or something else?

ClaryFray · 14/07/2020 17:42

Yanbu about the masks.

But sadly your post is rude and a massive sweeping generalisation. All English people are selfish, right o

I always feel there is a loud minority who spout off loudly about things that outrage them thinking everyone else thinks the same. In reality the quiet minority just get on with things and have a far more common sense approach.

There have been very few problems about mask wearing on public transport and few problems in Scotland. I expect it will actually be much the same in England and then also Wales and Northern Ireland.

I wear a mask and feel it is my responsible duty to do so. DH wears one because I nag him and has said he is relieved it will now be mandatory as he will no longer feel self conscious.

MargotB7 · 14/07/2020 17:46

I'm very confused. My friend who works in a carehome is telling me that fabric masks dont work against the virus. If this is true then why are we allowed to wear them? Has anybody got a link to confirm or otherwise?

I am currently ashamed of being British.

Good for fucking you Angry

And no, I don't want to save any lives. Happy now???????

FFS!

User24689 · 14/07/2020 17:49

How come we don't have to wear them in pubs and restaurants.

FrippEnos · 14/07/2020 17:51

@hardtimeuphere

I'm completely for masks but found your post patronising, rude and prejudice.
yup same.

In fact I would like to see them used in schools as well.

Lindy2 · 14/07/2020 17:51

MargotB7 they don't necessarily stop you catching it but they reduce the wearer's potential to spread it if they were unknowingly (or even knowingly) contagious.

Therefore if everyone wears one spread is reduced and the number of cases hopefully falls or at least doesn't increase.

By wearing a mask you protect others and other mask wearers protect you. Basic manners really that also saves lives.

Anyone who doesn't want to wear one is in my opinion incredibly selfish.

Abraid2 · 14/07/2020 17:52

OP, you sound sanctimonious. I’m busy sewing even more masks to add to those I made in April. Nobody I know in England has a problem with mask-wearing.

GalesThisMorning · 14/07/2020 17:52

@SockYarn

Honestly does the average Spanish person actually give a fuck about what we do or don’t do in England?

Of course they don't. All this "we're the laughing stock of the world" guff - no we're not. Because most other countries are doing their own thing and couldn't care less about what's happening in other countries. Just as we're not pointing and laughing at any other random country which we don't have a connection to.

Have you seen the temper tantrums some Americans are throwing in shops when asked to wear masks??? Plenty of people are pointing and laughing at them.

I wonder if British people will start to do the same? Or is silently seething more the British way? Wink

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 14/07/2020 17:54

Meh! I'm running out of energy. If it's mandatory, I'll wear one. If not, I won't.

You can think what you like.

elenacampana · 14/07/2020 17:55

@creamorwhite - I completely agree with you. I also find the OP’s tone disgusting and far too generalising.

OP - you are not in the UK. You don’t know what living here through this has been like. Concentrate on the life you are living in a different place and think about your own issues rather than barging in on ours with your holier than thou attitude.

cyclingmad · 14/07/2020 17:55

@goldfinchfan

I am currently ashamed of being British.

or don't you want to do that?

Calm down, if I don't want to wear one guess what I am then choosing not to go the shops...so how does that harm you or anyone else? Infect I'm more likely to be saving livsd than someone going out and wearing one because unless your mask can stop a virus passing through its not 100% effective. Me not going to the shops is 100% effective.

How about you don't go to the shops that much and order online instead or don't you want to save lives? Covidiot!!!!

piscis · 14/07/2020 17:57

@nobeer you are right, I left a word out!
I meant mask wearing in beaches is going to be mandatory in Andalucia.
Or that's what I've been told, and wouldn't be surprised!

Cosmodian · 14/07/2020 17:57

Well said!!

Brown76 · 14/07/2020 17:57

Completely agree. I'm in England, I was driving today listening to a news report on the radio about how masks in shops would soon be compulsory "like they are on public transport". At the same time passed 3 buses which all had people on them without masks. Out on Saturday, I would say about 10% of people had masks on. The majority were elderly people but their masks will not protect them, it's only others wearing masks that will.

piscis · 14/07/2020 18:00

I mean, that becoming mandatory is like saying "you must stay home" because who is going to go to the beach to wear a face mask? Even more so in Andalucia and in those temperatures.
I have to be clear, I am not against mask wearing at all, but in some situations and outdoors is a bit ridiculous, specially when you can be in a bar terrace with friends without one

Nonnymum · 14/07/2020 18:00

I agree OP. I cant believe the amount of whining and moaning we get in this country. We are not special in any way!
