Masks - GET A GRIP.

Ok.

So. Lots of whinging about masks at the moment as BoJo finally hauls his arse into gear and says that you have to wear them in the shops and on public transport.

In Catalunya where I live masks are obligatory. Every time you are in public. Including in the street. Inside and out. The exceptions are

Medical conditions (you need a paper justifying this)
When playing sport
Children under the age of 6
If eating or drinking

If you don't comply - 100 euro fine. No arguments.

Most people here were already wearing masks anyway (because we saw the horror at the beginning of the pandemic here and we know what a real lockdown is like - not allowed out at all, children locked inside for nearly 3 months, etc)

People arent whining and complaining nor imagining how they can invent aome excuse to mean that the rules don't apply to them and the overwhelming majority of people are wearing them all the time.

Tourists not so much but they getting fined. Good.

So England. PLEASE. Stop with the selfishness. Literally dozens of countries have mandatory mask wearing and citizens comply because they care about each other and don't spend their time acting entitled and "I'm all right Jack"

There are articles in the European press about this. Literally "English people are selfish - is it any wonder they are so resistant to wear masks". It's embarrassing. As a nation, as a society, it's time to grow up and just put the mask on like everyone else.

English people. You aren't special. You are starting to look like the kid who gets thw whole class detention because they just keep on breaking the rules.

Wear the mask. Please. It's for the safety of everyone.

And if you ABSOLUTELY MUST come to Spain on holiday, even more so.

@Needamanicure, isn't it the 24th july yet?? I hadn't noticed...

The issue here is that
1- people are moaning about it and therefore I assume they are ;ess likely to get on with it
2- if they are resisting NOW, they are also less likely to get ready, by acquiring a mask/making one (or several to allow for washing etc...)

Waiting until the 24th July to decide if non wearers are an issue or not is too little too late.

HesterShaw1 · 14/07/2020 16:28

Still not clear on how Spain's ROOLZ are something to aspire to.

Is the approaching mask fundamentalism the new thing now that lockdown fundamentalism has had to be reluctantly relinquished? The shouty capitals, the "I DISPAIR", the "We are the laughing stock of the world" posts...?

Clappingforjoy · 14/07/2020 16:28

Also OP dont come on here to slate the English

Alsohuman · 14/07/2020 16:29

Nope, not moaning, whining, whinging, grizzling or complaining. Just not going anywhere that requires one. Easy.

SorrelBlackbeak · 14/07/2020 16:30

@saltycat

The only way the naysayers will wear masks is if there are hefty fines for not doing so. I'm not sure if that will be the case, probably will though.

I do realise that some are genuinely unable to wear a mask. OK so, get your exemption certificate. Should be a £100 charge for them too! Oops.

Sometimes people in Britain (well England anyway) come across as having an exceptional view of themselves. That's not a criticism it's a fact. History and Brexit shows it.

Masks will become the norm fairly soon I think, but the usual rebels (not those medically exempt) will continue to push the boundaries and rely on their exceptionalism.

Don't know whether to press the button and reply, but what the heck I will!

Fines are to be set at £100. There are issues about enforceability in that the police have already said they won't enforce it and will expect shops to do so.
Legoandloldolls · 14/07/2020 16:30

@mollokoy

Weird post.

Sorry you hate the English for some reason. Maybe log off for a bit.

I am heartened by a civic life and democracy that debates its policies vigorously and in public. I really really could not give a toss if "Britain is a laughing stock" because we do this. I encourage everyone to air their views, even or in fact especially if they counter my own.

Also, just...It's actually one of the weirdest talking points on MN, really. If you spend your time laughing your socks off at people dying in a global pandemic I'd keep that to yourself, frankly. What else cracks you up? Fukushima? Hmm

That last sentence. Spot on.
Jenasaurus · 14/07/2020 16:30

Im English and everyone I know has been talking about all the masks they have ordered to ensure they comply with the new rules, so not all English people are selfish.

QuestionMarkNow · 14/07/2020 16:31

@cologne4711, beause the non wearers, moaning british the OP is referring to are not wearing masks WHERE SHE LIVES and this DESPITE the fact its complusory in Spain.

Surely if you want to go on hols soehwre, the least you can do is
1- to respect the law of the country where you live
2- have respect for the ;eath of the people there. British tourists have been known to start new cases in touristic areas. Because, very simply, our infections are tsill much higher than in Spain (or france, italy etc...). If someone is 'dangerous' (as in more likely to bring the virus) it's british people.

ArthurMorgan · 14/07/2020 16:31

I saw two BABIES wearing masks today Sad

MissConductUS · 14/07/2020 16:31

@cyclingmad

Your not even living in this country so butt out quite frankly. It wouldn't even cross my mind to start a bashing thread about another country I don't live in. Even if I was an ex pat.

Well said, and welcome to my world. There are America bashing threads regularly on MN and nobody bats an eye about them.

To ask you to tell me the bad things about living in America?

It's all kicking off in America

strawberrypip · 14/07/2020 16:32

@GreytExpectations lol I said mind ya business - multiple times but some still dont get the message eh!

who's refused to wear a mask? I haven't refused? not only people in england who are being morons - they exist everywhere. just another thread loving an excuse to knock England as a whole when mandatory mask wearing hasnt even come into play here yet - only on mumsnet

pigoons · 14/07/2020 16:33

Oh OP keep your sanctimonious posts to yourself.

I would be much more willing to accept masks if the Government published the data on effectiveness of masks alone i.e. not alongside other preventative measures such as SD and hand washing; had a viable test and trace system; acknowledged that face coverings are difficult for people with glasses and children under 12; had some consistency about their messaging i.e. why is it safe for restaurants to be open without masks and supermarkets aren't.

I could go on

ProfessorPootle · 14/07/2020 16:34

Not heard anyone moaning IRL about this, I make masks on my Etsy shop and they are pretty much sold out, can't make them fast enough.

Defenbaker · 14/07/2020 16:34

I'm all for wearing masks in shops and other places where social distancing can't be maintained, but YABU for your anti English attitude, and for starting yet another thread about masks.

Jenasaurus · 14/07/2020 16:35

Its a shame about this selfish Mask refusing person....

www.euroweeklynews.com/2020/07/12/spanish-singer-has-malaga-concert-cancelled-after-refusing-to-wear-a-mask/

Oh Wait hes Spanish!

WanderingMilly · 14/07/2020 16:35

I am English. I absolutely agree with you, OP, regarding the English.
Everyone else in other countries is able to wear a mask but no, the English are upset, complaining, divided, moaning....
I travel a lot (before COVID) and have lived abroad...no wonder overseas they roll their eyes when travellers say they're English....

KarenMcKaren · 14/07/2020 16:37

1- people are moaning about it and therefore I assume they are ;ess likely to get on with it

In which case they won't be able to go in the shops until they do.

Again, in which case they won't be able to go in the shops until they do.

Best people worry about themselves really. They don't need to take the moral supremacist pathway and worry about what everyone else is doing.

www.theolivepress.es/spain-news/2020/07/14/restaurant-waitress-in-spains-valencia-gets-attacked-after-customer-refuses-to-wear-a-mask/

And another selfish mask refuser...again Spanish!

If you want to attack a whole country and say we are all selfish non mask wearing complainers, you should look closer to home first.

QuestionMarkNow · 14/07/2020 16:42

Actually that's not so sure. Because 1- retailers are saying they won't stop people coming in if they don't wear a mask 2- the police is saying its an impossible task, hinting at the idea they wont be going afer people as a matter of course.

That, in itself, will make it harder for that rule to be implemeneted. ESPECIALLY if people aren't convince or have just decided that they dont want to be inconvenienced.

I have to say, I have said it before but I find that EXTEMELY SELFISH ATTITUDE. Most people are having a massive go at antivaxxers for being selfish. I'm struggling to see how refusing to wear a mask because 'its unconfortable' is any different (bar the usual 'not people who GENUINELY can't wear a mask'. I know one or two peopple like this)

Legoandloldolls · 14/07/2020 16:42

It's quite interesting that there arent other threads on MN on this topic so thank you for the enlightened view OP. I was born in England, have a biology degree and worked in medical research and disease control.

But your assumption that I am therefore thick and selfish are spot on. I made masks in March and bought some in January when i heard of Wohan.

I do love how people are trying to lay blame. Blame the brits, blame the stupid, blame the mask wearers, the non mask wearers, the people buying their weekly food, the people who drive, wear pink, breath in and out.

It wont save you from catching this. You cant claim compensation. Insulting others isn't medically proven to kill viruses.

I'm sure your totally right about everything. Well done, pat on the back. Do you need Witty's number so you can educate him ( I think I was born in England too. What a liberty!).

It's possible that some of these tourists went on holiday before the law changed in Spain as it only came in there on the 9th.

I don't know how readily available masks are in Spain if you don't have access to internet shopping. They would be harder to get hold of here.

HOkieCOkie · 14/07/2020 16:46

I wear a mask in public transport and on an Uber and if I have to in a shop I’ll wear one. Not sure the issue, or need for such an agressive thread.

RibenaMonsoon · 14/07/2020 16:46

I've not heard anyone in real life complaining about wearing masks and don't have an issue with it myself . But by all means, tar all English people with the same brush. Hmm

Ridiculous thread!

Pinkyyy · 14/07/2020 16:46

YABVU.
Take your English hating elsewhere. Moaning is part of our culture.

Cyberattack · 14/07/2020 16:49

I agree with you OP
