A whole chicken- Forgot it was in the fridge - dated 9th July but smells absolutely fine. Seems such a waste of a poor chooks life to just go in the bin.

I agree but don’t risk it. It’s a nay from me.

CandyCaneLane0 · 14/07/2020 12:08

I wouldn't risk it with chicken

RuthW · 14/07/2020 12:08

No.

One day maybe, 5 days, not a chance

Doyoumind · 14/07/2020 12:09

That's quite a way out of date for chicken. Usually if it smells ok I will use it but 5 days is a push.

romdowa · 14/07/2020 12:09

I wouldnt risk it but I know people who would if it smelled fine

rosie1959 · 14/07/2020 12:09

Definitely a ney one product I don't mess with is chicken

Riv12345 · 14/07/2020 12:10

No way

Food can still look fresh even when it's off
Wouldn't risk it especially chicken

So it's a nay from me

flibbertmygibbert · 14/07/2020 12:10

Oh my goodness no.

Flyingagainstreason · 14/07/2020 12:10

If it smells ok and there is no slime and you’re oven cooking it. It should be ok. But people wash chicken on mumsnet and are probably going to be glad when they start bleaching them. So I’m sure you’ll overwhelmingly get a no answer!

Notcontent · 14/07/2020 12:10

No, please don’t eat it. Meat - particularly chicken - can be full of bacteria even if it smells fine.

Other foods - like fruit, vegetables, even diary products - you can do the smell test or even cut off the mouldy bits - but not with meat, fish or chicken!

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 14/07/2020 12:11

If it smells fine, it'll be fine. I'd eat it no worries. But I go against MN on many things, so perhaps wise to ignore me Blush

gamerchick · 14/07/2020 12:11

You know when chicken is off and if you don't when it's uncooked you will when it's cooking Envy

Mind I walked in on husband cooking chicken once and nearly vomited. He was oblivious Envy not envy. I check all his meat these days because obviously he doesn't have a sense of smell!

ChangeThePassword · 14/07/2020 12:12

I'm pretty lax with use by dates, but 5 days is too much for chicken imo.

amusedbush · 14/07/2020 12:12

I’m pretty lax with dates on food but I wouldn’t use the chicken. One day yes, maybe two if it smelled/felt okay but not five days.

Flyingagainstreason · 14/07/2020 12:13

Also there’s a difference between a sell by date and a use by date

DivisionBelles · 14/07/2020 12:13

I'm quite ambivalent about use by dates on lots of things, but never chicken. I would bin it,

justanotherneighinparadise · 14/07/2020 12:13

Cook it and if it smells bad, Chuck it

Iloveyoutothefridgeandback · 14/07/2020 12:15

If it looks and smells fine then I'd eat it.

Starbuggy · 14/07/2020 12:15

Definitely bin it, chicken is one of those foods not to mess around with and 5 days past use by is a lot for any fresh meat

Bloops · 14/07/2020 12:16

Nooooooo!!! I would if it was one day but not nearly a week.

Tlollj · 14/07/2020 12:16

Not five days over I wouldn’t.
Also how can you miss a whole chicken in the fridge.

BrandyandBabycham · 14/07/2020 12:18

No not after 5 days

hellsbellsmelons · 14/07/2020 12:20

1 day - 2 max for OOD chicken.
You could cook it and give it to the dog if you have one.
Make sure it's 'really' cooked through though.

gotothecooler · 14/07/2020 12:24

My question is why on earth would you?

AhBallix · 14/07/2020 12:24

I'm a sniffer and have eaten things waaay past their use by date. But not chicken. Or indeed any other fresh meat or fish. One or two days past date max.

I have survived 12 days out of date coleslaw, but that was an accident! I hate throwing food away, especially if it hasn't even been opened, but I would say in this case, don't risk it.
