Chicken past it’s use by date - yay or nay?

A whole chicken- Forgot it was in the fridge - dated 9th July but smells absolutely fine. Seems such a waste of a poor chooks life to just go in the bin.

I'm a microbiologist and I'd eat it. I'd obliterate it, none of this juicy nonsense, but I'd eat it.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 14/07/2020 15:04

Also a sniffer. Have you got right down and sniffed the inside of it? I can't believe that a chicken would survive 5 days after its sell-by date.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 14/07/2020 15:13

If you do decide to eat it, against all the advice here, keep the wrapper and label as the ambulance crew may find it helpful.

Northernsoullover · 14/07/2020 15:19

Sometimes food spoilage isn't apparent. It doesn't always smell bad.

Ethelfleda · 14/07/2020 15:43

Not for chicken. Definitely not.

That's the key, cook it long and well, like a curry. No grilling. And only if there's no smell at all. And you're not nose-blind/olfactorally challenged.

Ikeasucks · 14/07/2020 17:31

Ok, do if I don’t eat it - should i chuck in the field nearby for the foxes?

OP posts:
gamerchick · 14/07/2020 17:34

No.

Ikeasucks · 14/07/2020 17:35

“Any meat past its Use By date is a definite no. That date is there for a reason, chicken is notorious for having campylobacter. And this is 5 days out of date!

This has Darwin Award written all over it.“

Jesus, some folk have no sense of adventure- i eat meat slightly past the use by date all the time. And eggs? If it doesn’t float or run off down the road clucking, it’s good to go.

Not a chance I'd eat it

hellsbellsmelons · 14/07/2020 17:36

That made me LOL OP!
I wouldn't give foxes raw OOD meat.
If you cook it - maybeee!????

GU24Mum · 14/07/2020 17:36

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am largely very cavalier about sell-by/use-by dates as I reckon I can work things out myself BUT I absolutely draw the line at chicken. Possibly 1-2 days over if I'm feeling rash but that's pushing it.

Personally I wouldn't leave it for the foxes as it will encourage them to scavenge near you.

Limensoda · 14/07/2020 17:38

No. Use by dates mean don't risk it.

Roselilly36 · 14/07/2020 17:38

No way, bin it.

beautifulxdisasters · 14/07/2020 17:40

I'm pretty lax and I'd eat chicken 1-2 days past UBD if not obviously smelly and off, but not more. I think 5 days is past it, sorry!

PolloDePrimavera · 14/07/2020 17:43

Do you know a dog who could eat it? Their tummies can tolerate out of date chicken, you say it smells ok? Or cats maybe?!

Nobody who buys/eats chicken actually gives a damn about the "poor chook's life", or they wouldn't have had it bred and killed for them in the first place.
