Will face masks make you more likely to shop and eat out?

I understand the reasons for making face masks compulsory. But I’m not sure whether I’ll want to go out into the shops or restaurants and spend money on the high streets unless I really need something specific once everyone’s faces are covered.

Will compulsory face mask make you:

YES - MORE likely to go out shopping/ eating out on the high street

NO- LESS likely to go out shopping

It’s a big relief to the retail workers who had no choice but to return to work or take unpaid leave due to family members shielding or being vulnerable. Out of respect for them, putting on a mask to shop is not asking for too much is it

People aren't saying they won't wear them. They are saying they will shop less in shops. This will affect retail workers in a different way - less customers = less work/pay

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/07/2020 11:33

I won't go at all. I might go to the corner shop and put my mask on to go in and take it off as soon as I'm out but that's it. I certainly won't be queuing to get in a shop or browsing in a mask and I can't think of anything I need that I can't get online.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/07/2020 11:34

I should add this is because I'm claustrophobic and not because I just don't want to wear a mask

I will be shopping less too. Will have to in Sainsbury obviously, but for other stuff I will either go without or use Internet shopping. Overall I think people will spend less.

IzziC · 14/07/2020 11:39

@KizzyWayfarer Yup. I honestly thought that lockdown would have us evaluate our lives more.
Did we wonder if we "needed" the cheap throwaway products from the tax dodging, cheap labour companies?
If we we're worried that the bins might not get collected, did we start to think how we might minimize our waste?
Did we find a short lived appreciation for key workers, but not quite enough to get up and vote against a pay freeze. (Do we still find ourselves saying "work hard at school or you'll end up working in a supermarket" like it's derogatory?)
Did we start to shop locally when the queues at the supermarket were really long for empty shelves?
Did we start to shop with purpose, with a list, buying only what we'd gone into the shop for, not getting stung by special offers and feeling really great because we'd saved money?
Nope. Because we wanted to get back to normal, beause normal was just great.

Winederlust · 14/07/2020 11:41

Regardless of the pros and cons of mask wearing and whether you agree with it or not, for me it's another thing to think about when leaving the house which takes away from the enjoyment that I would normally get from shopping etc, and would make me less likely to bother. It will be essential trips only for me for now i think.

Smoothprocrastinator · 14/07/2020 11:42

I find it so precious that people en masse are refusing the mask. I cannot get my head around it.
I will be MORE likely to go shopping now everyone is taking precautions.

Sunshinegirl82 · 14/07/2020 11:45

@smoothprocrastinator

Has anyone here said they won't wear a mask?

SarahBellam · 14/07/2020 11:45

No, COVID-19 will make me less likely to shop and eat out. There are still many people dying of it every day and we have not got the spread under control. All this ‘Ooh I’m too special to wear a mask’ is nonsense. Suck it up buttercup and stop trying to kill people.

coronafiona · 14/07/2020 11:46

No. I'm happy to wear one occasionally but I like my new quiet life so I'm going to carry on staying in!

DappledThings · 14/07/2020 11:47

And again, nobody is saying that. They're saying g they will wear a mask where it is mandatory but intentionally reduce the amount of time they are in situations where it is now mandatory. How is that "trying to kill people"?

Smoothprocrastinator · 14/07/2020 11:48

@Sunshinegirl82 on mumsnet? Yes, plenty of threads about it

Daisychains20 · 14/07/2020 11:48

I won’t be wearing one as I am asthmatic and have a heart problem. I tried at the beginning in March had it on for 20 minutes, breathing was really hard for me and I came over really bad and nearly passed out. A staff member in the supermarket had to help me. So obviously I won’t be wearing one but it also puts me off going out and being questioned about my health conditions which are no ones else’s business.

I will be very interested how people who Are exempt are going to be made to prove it as anyone can print something offline so they don’t have to wear one and I can’t see doctors having the time to write thousands of exemption certificates of some kind. Confused

Where has anyone said they are too special to wear a mask?

Personally I don't want to wear one but obviously will if I have to, however I don't have to go shopping or to a restaurant.

Springersrock · 14/07/2020 11:50

I think psychologically wearing masks and seeing others in masks is a reminder that coronavirus is still present and will make people stay 2m away more

I’ve found the complete opposite to be honest. When I’ve been in shops, the people wearing masks seem to completely ignore the one way systems, get too close, push past, reach across you, etc.

People aren't saying they won't wear them. They are saying they will shop less in shops

This ^^. I don’t like them, I’m really claustrophobic and they make me panic, but I’ll happily put one on, I just won’t shop in actual shops unless I have to.

Nobody’s refusing the mask. They’re just going to avoid places where they’re forced to wear one. Brick and mortar shops will go down like skittles now with huge job losses. As always, people will vote with their feet.

Because this is MN and, since the pandemic started, there seems to have been a competition for who can be the nastiest or most over the top with their comments.
JovialNickname · 14/07/2020 11:51

Having to wear a mask is going to make shopping an experience to be ensured, not enjoyed. I'll wear one because I have to but I'll be going in, grabbing only what I need and coming straight out again. I won't be going for "a wander round the shops" (with he inevitable extra spending / coffee that would include) any more.

I bet there'll be a huge rise in spending in the few days leading up to the 24th, only to have spending fall off a cliff when masks are made mandatory.

Sunshinegirl82 · 14/07/2020 11:52

@smoothprocrastinator

On this thread? I've seen lots of people saying they will choose not to go to places where masks are required but no one saying they will point blank refuse to wear one and crack on anyway.

Smoothprocrastinator · 14/07/2020 11:55

Nobody’s going to refuse now as there’s a £100 fine attached to it. Grin But seeing as we all have the option of wearing one and protecting the vulnerable right now and still people don’t, just absolutely baffles me. Confused
I’ve been unable to go out for months due to this, now I can feel a bit more protected. I for one am happy about it.

goatley · 14/07/2020 11:58

@runbummyrun

I won't be going anywhere now. What a load of shit.
Same here.

I have been careful, stuck to all the rules but I draw the line at wearing a mask 4 months in to the pandemic.

DonutDolittle · 14/07/2020 12:00

No. Masks make me panic but I'll wear one where I have to and get through it by hiding somewhere and taking it off to breathe.. But shopping just isn't worth it. Also, if staff don't have to wear them then I am making myself uncomfortable by doing something non-essential without the risk being eliminated. If my mask wearing ensured a risk free environment then I'd be inclined to force myself to get used to them, but it's only the customers and I avoid them anyway!

It's just not worth it for me. Amazon will continue to get all of my money, urgh.

Clawdy · 14/07/2020 12:00

Will wear mask in shops when mandatory, but definitely won't be shopping as much. Not much pleasure from shopping even now, but wearing a mask will make it worse for me.

beenrumbled · 14/07/2020 12:00

I'm happy to wear a mask where its needed and where it's mandatory, to protect others and myself- but I will avoid those places unless I absolutely need to go out.

So no, masks being mandatory will not encourage me to shop/go out more more.
