Will face masks make you more likely to shop and eat out?

CamDram · 14/07/2020 07:41

I understand the reasons for making face masks compulsory. But I’m not sure whether I’ll want to go out into the shops or restaurants and spend money on the high streets unless I really need something specific once everyone’s faces are covered.

Will compulsory face mask make you:

YES - MORE likely to go out shopping/ eating out on the high street

NO- LESS likely to go out shopping

I’ve bought two...and found out I don’t need to wear one at work but it will come in handy elsewhere

Mia1415 · 14/07/2020 15:00

I won't be going out shopping unless I absolutely have to.

I'm asthmatic. Its under control normally and I rarely have to use an inhaler. However I can't manage more than 20 minutes with a mask on without having an attack.

I know I'm exempt but I don't want to have to justify myself to strangers so I will be staying away from shops as much as I possibly can.

@Sonineties

Masks: Are great news for Amazon and Ocado, bad news for high street Give false sense of security Are widely misused Are generally ineffective unless in specific situations (like hospitals and care homes, or meatpacking factories) where they are mandated or widely used already. Distract from far more important and effective actions like self-isolation and social distancing (masks are a terrible substitute for either of these) Didn’t help us reduce the infection rate by nearly 98% over the last few months Were not a factor in avoiding spikes post VE Day, Bournemouth beach, BLM protests etc etc - nobody wore masks, no spikes Most worryingly, demonstrate that Governments are not to be trusted because they make bizarre decisions for such illogical reasons
I completely agree
BarbedBloom · 14/07/2020 15:11

I am still shielding as they can't decide if I am extremely clinically vulnerable or shouldn't go out (disagreement in medical community about two bits of my medication). I won't be going out shopping (I hate it anyway) or to crowded public places anyway, but on the odd occasions I do have to go out I will wear a mask and will be glad if those who are able do too.

The honest fact is that losing 20% of my husband's salary during furlough has left us with no disposable income anyway, so I very much doubt we will be doing anything but catching up on our bills.

randomer · 14/07/2020 15:15

@Gobbolinothewitchscat, well said indeed. What use is a bit of infected cloth hanging round your face?

That's the whole point.

mencken · 14/07/2020 15:20

no, but that I'm not a saddo who thinks shopping is fun. I've been wearing a mask in shops for some weeks now. I will still only be shopping for what I need - just as I have always done.

no eating out for some time though, that should be fun and isn't in the current situation.

Millie2013 · 14/07/2020 15:21

Echo some other posters, it won’t stop me going shopping for things we need/don’t want to buy on line, it will stop me from just browsing, or popping into town for a mooch and coffee
My bank balance will be healthier though Grin

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 14/07/2020 15:24

Neither more nor less likely. I will happily wear a mask when I go out for essential food shopping. I will not be going to the pub / restaurants or non - essential shops.
Covid has destroyed my DP's health and ruined our life. We are both in our mid 30s with no underlying health conditions.
I would not wish the last 3 months on my worst enemy.

HoldMyLobster · 14/07/2020 15:24

I will be MORE likely to go shopping now everyone is taking precautions.

Yes, exactly this. My US state reopened more than a month ago now, without any rise in cases, and I've been eating out and shopping a fair bit, and thoroughly enjoying it.

It's good to see life getting a bit more back to normal, and it's good to see an end to the economic struggle.

randomer · 14/07/2020 15:26

Tbh if the people who wont wear one at all wont go out, that's not a bad solution anyway

So when I go out with my partner for a walk I have to wear one on the 24th July but not on the 23rd? or do you prefer me to stay at home and go insane?

Goosefoot · 14/07/2020 15:27

I don't think the sudden big push for masks is really about safety.

In my province in Canada we haven't had a new case in weeks, and the whole region of the country is pretty much the same. There is simply no community transmission.

But the pressure to wear masks is going way up, with all kinds of people posting stuff about not being anti-science, about non-maskers not caring about potentially affecting others etc. The younger woke types are all wearing masks.

We went from active transmission in the community to none pretty smoothly without many people wearing them. And they are not talking about stopping social distancing anyway, so there is no advantage to masks allowing people to get closer.

ChavvySexPond · 14/07/2020 15:29

Shop: Yes.

Eat out: No.

Figmentofmyimagination · 14/07/2020 15:33

It’s such a shame for the small shops that have implemented successful social distancing. Our local small bakery, for example, has done quite well during the lockdown - one in one out, with sanitiser for all on a table outside the shop, bread cooked on the premises, bit of a chat.

It was a small pleasure to shop there - often unplanned if there was no queue. Not any more. Now it will be a tedious trial to be endured and I’ll go back to shoving bread in my trolley in the supermarket as quickly as possible.

sleepingpup · 14/07/2020 15:36

Luckily it's only in shops and on public transport so you won't have to change anything on the 24th when you go out for a walk.

billysboy · 14/07/2020 15:42

ging to cancel my week away now as i cannot help think it will detract from it all with the masks as well

sleepingpup · 14/07/2020 15:53

Don't do that@billysboy ! Go and enjoy yourself!

You'll be wearing them like the best of them soon!
Hundreds of thousands already are!

Costacoffeeplease · 14/07/2020 16:02

Wearing a mask ‘a tedious trial’ ? FFS

Squirrelblanket · 14/07/2020 16:08

Apart from one weekly supermarket visit, I won't be going anywhere until the government have forgotten the whole idea.

Which will probably be in a couple of weeks judging by recent events.

sleepingpup · 14/07/2020 16:09

’ ? Wearing a mask ‘a tedious trial’ ?FFS

After all it's only a mask we have to wear. Not a full gorilla bodysuit.

Everydayisalearningday · 14/07/2020 16:09

@iolaus

Won't make a difference to me - the not trying on clothes is making me less likely to go clothes shopping than mask wearing

I wear one in work and have got used to it now, I haven't routinely been wearing one if I go out outside of work but if it becomes compulsory then I will

Agreed back in the old times I’d take me dds on treat yo self days a browse around the shops I’d treat them and take them to lunch. Last week we did it wore masks on public transport, put the shops hand gel on in every shop, queued, to be honest it started to do my head in, I suppose it’ll do us good to be a bit less frivolous with our money
Alsohuman · 14/07/2020 16:13

The economic struggle - in the UK at least - hasn’t even started.
