Face masks. To feel that we have all been through enough....

And shouldn’t have to wear face masks if we don’t want to. I know it’s not officially been confirmed yet, but it’s expected to be today, and I don’t get it. If face masks truly help prevent the spreading of the virus, then why on earth wasn’t it made compulsory at the beginning of this pandemic, why now? I know you’ll all likely call me selfish but I can’t do it. I have to wear a mask for ten minutes once or twice month to collect mine and dh’s medication and I find it unbearable even for that small amount of time. They make my face itch and make me want to touch my face more, I can’t breathe properly and get panicky, they slide up as they’re too big for my face and hit my eye lids. My ds is autistic and I suspect I have some traits eg sensory issues, and the thought of having to wear these masks when I find shopping stressful enough as it is, fills me with dread. AIBU?

It’s a small sacrifice to make. I lost my Dad as a result of a covid infection at the end of May. Wear the mask and enjoy the life you have been blessed with.

Plumbuddle · 15/07/2020 20:46

Just another thought for how you can face this, OP. After I suggested making a silk mask I googled them and oh my gosh there are some beautiful items on sale, from Etsy to a collection curated by Vogue. On Amazon there are some lovely snoody ones that drape over your whole neck like a turtleneck. I would suggest you comb through these sites for ideas, if it becomes a thing of beauty for you you may be able to contemplate wearing one.
I agree with others thought that in a British context the wearing of masks in shops is going to lead to poor social distancing. Personally I do all shopping online now and keep out of all the hell holes I can. That also, coincidentally, reduces the need to wear masks.

It's alright saying we've been through enough if the virus has completely gone and we've all forgotten what covid-19 is. However it hasn't, and we've all got a way to go. And if a bit of inconvenience and being a bit uncomfortable is what we've got to do for our own benefit and other people's then it's tough. It gets my goat that people can't do simple things. If it was a child carrying on about not wanting to do as they're told, they'd be told off. For an adult not to do as they're told is ridiculous.

Celestine70 · 15/07/2020 20:48

YABU. Get a cotton one. Make a cotton one. Or just wear a cotton scarf wrapped around your nose and mouth. Breath through your mouth if you need more air. I have lung problems and I wear one even though I find it hard.

If face masks truly help prevent the spreading of the virus, then why on earth wasn’t it made compulsory at the beginning of this pandemic, why now?”

Because scientific knowledge doesn’t stand still. We know much more now than we did in March and evidence increasingly supports wearing masks to help protect others. If as many of us that can do, the protection is reciprocal.

Hundreds have died in Japan as opposed to tens of thousands here. No lockdown there, mass mask wearing is standard and has been for many years.

As soon as I clicked on this thread, endless adverts for face masksGrin

Wear the mask. We've all had enough.

Julz1622 · 15/07/2020 21:14

I live in Scotland and it's been compulsory since last week. I don't see the big deal. It isn't a huge effort to wear a face covering while in a shop. If you have any disabilities or breathing difficulties then there are exceptions so unless you have something like this just get on with it and stop moaning

Her1mum · 15/07/2020 21:18

YABU to whinge about something that is really very little trouble and may help keep the death rate down.

YankeeinKingArthursCourt · 15/07/2020 21:30

@Stickystick

To be fair, I am not surprised that Matt Hancock gave conflicting advice about mask use (inside of offices vs shops).

UK Covid government policy is often about what is politically / economically expedient rather than what is purely a scientifically evidenced-based approach. Hancock studied Philosophy, Politics & Economics, so has NO medical or scientific background or expertise.

Like many people, I have looked at the global body of public health evidence from epidemiologists / virologists etc over several months ( CDC, WHO, The Lancet etc) & the global consensus for public mask use indoors is compelling.

Let's hope that the UK can ( finally) get on board with the rest of the world.

Chilledchablis · 15/07/2020 21:34

YABU Also live in Scotland where masks are mandatory. If you don't like it, don't go shopping. I admit, the first time I did a supermarket shop, I felt quite uncomfortable and panicky but gradually I'm adjusting to it. I even had my first dental appointment today OMG I thought I was there for major surgery instead of a check up but if it helps keep control of this awful virus it has to be done.

Toooldforthisshit49 · 15/07/2020 21:39

@kidsclub29 but I think now we are understanding the virus isn’t very deadly at all and we can start to relax.
Really? Not very deadly? thousands of people have died!!

FancyAnOlive · 15/07/2020 21:42

YABU. Wear it to protect others. I have been wearing one and you do get used to it - feels weird at first but it's fine now. Recent report suggests worst case scenario of 120,000 deaths this winter - we could still be in the foothills of this pandemic so the idea that we can just say we have had enough is misplaced unfortunately.

Shirls22 · 15/07/2020 22:38

Sorry to say YABU
I ve been a nurse for 45 years and for 30 of those years I had to wear a face mask every working day as I worked in theatres and as a midwife. Yes you re right it’s not comfortable but it’s tolerable and you do get used to it. This virus is not going to go away any time soon and this is a simple way of helping to protect ourselves and our loved ones.

@NiknicK

I know we all have a duty of care and that’s why I wouldn’t dream of going out if I had symptoms. Now before anyone informs me that you can be a symptomatic, i feel really poorly when I have a simple cold, so I’m sure if I had coronavirus I’d know about it and I’d stay at home. I haven’t taken my dc anywhere except for walks, we haven’t been in anyone’s home yet even though we are allowed, I haven’t visited grandparents, I’ve had no one in my house including my own parents, even though they’re allowed, my dc haven’t been all to school even though tneu could go back, I don’t plan on eating out just yet, have no desire to go to a pub and I wash my hands regularly. So as far as I’m concerned I have been protecting other people. I just don’t want to wear a mask.
You can be a-symptomatic and not know a thing about it, you can't say you would know. It's great you have been following the rules, I wish more had. Masks have proven to be a very effective way of stopping the spread. They are important and they well be a part of life for a long time to come. They're not the most comfortable, but you do get used to it. I have been wearing one 5/7 since March because I work in healthcare. It really is important to protect yourself and others and I really don't think wearing a mask for short periods while shopping is too much to ask - just my personal opinion
mimosaadorna · 15/07/2020 22:55

Sorry, but I think that’s a really daft comment “we’ve all had enough”. It’s a bloody virus we neither have a cure or a vaccine for. Most of us have had enough, especially if like me your mum died because of what’s happening- no goodbye, a funeral with 9 people, none of whom could comfort each other ?....its only a mask !!!!. What’s wrong with you !- ok you don’t like it, it drives you nuts- but guess how much worse it will be if you get Coronavirus and die ?. Or someone you love catches it and dies because someone not wearing a mask coughs or sneezes on them ? Start by wearing one around the house for 1 minute, and gradually build on that. None of us like it, but we all need Get with it !!😡😡😡😡

CW1976 · 15/07/2020 23:17

Get a grip. Our nurses and doctors have to wear a face mask for 8+ hour shifts. Do your bit.

syskywalker · 15/07/2020 23:41

You are being extremely unreasonable! Science has proven it does 1) protect others from your germs. You might have the virus and be symptom less. 2) it cuts the risk of getting it by about half, if you wear them right. But yeah because they make you itchy you can go endangering other people’s life’s. Grow up!

SurreyHillsGirl · 15/07/2020 23:45

Have a word with yourself.

Wear a mask.

😷

MarvellousMayhem · 15/07/2020 23:47

Yes it’s annoying when the mask rides up into your eyes. I agree they are horrible to wear!
My tip is when you put the mask on and you squeezed the metal bit to form to your nose.
Pull the bottom bit of mask to be firmly under your chin, it seems to help me somehow?

I think if you can put up with a short time that is okay because masks shouldn’t be a substitute for social distancing and it will make you think about if you really need to make that journey.

Other option apart from cloth mask that might be acceptable is a visor (I think that’s what they’re called) the clear plastic thing that covers your whole face and is strapped around your head.

SionnachRua · 15/07/2020 23:48

Yabu. You can't just opt out of Coronavirus unfortunately, much as we'd all like to. Suck it up and wear a mask.

Elsewyre · 15/07/2020 23:50

So get a mask that's fits, is made from a different material, get a visor so you dont have anything touching your face at all.

And they weren't mandatory at the start because there is a limited global capacity for the production of masks.

Saying all 60 million people need them from day 1 would have completely absorbed that capacity leaving none for emergency workers etc.

Unsurprisingly it takes time to take a fairly fixed volume product that is normally used only in a professional environment and scale it up to entire populations worth of production.
