Yesterday, ds (aged 8) took part in our county inter-schools cross country running competion.
Now ds isn't an athlete by any stretch of the imagination, but he wanted to do it, and wanted to represent his school. This is a HUGE issue for me, as in the last academic year his behaviour at school was pretty rocky, and I was worrying that he was going off it all together.

But he went to the competition after school, and finished the run. He came 104th, out of 105 who finished.

Everyone except my mum, and ds's head teacher, thinks it's funny he came next to last.
I think it's terrific that he even wanted to do it, and wonderful that he actually finished.

I'm quite cross with everyone

See, Cod thinks he did well, and she's a teacher.

gingerninja · 28/09/2007 16:31

Can't understand why they'd laugh. have they ever run cross country? I'm all for competition but an achievment is an achievement and he did well. Congratulations

suedonim · 28/09/2007 16:47

Oh bless him, he's a star, Clumsymum! I was pleased to bits when dd came somewhere at the back of a X-country run, for the same reasons as others state, the taking part, the trying etc. But luckily, no one laughs at that school, they laud all achievements.

Marina · 28/09/2007 16:51

Ds got a generous and genuine round of applause for coming a massive last in a sack race at sports day last year. REALLY last, as in, being pursued by the next lot of runners.
Well done to your boy for stepping up to something as foul and thankless as a school cross-country run and doing his best.
I hope his class teacher is of the same opinion as the head.
Not funny at all, he should be very proud of himself

Threadworm · 28/09/2007 16:54

Those people who laughed: have they never been to a mass running event for adults? The atmosphere there is all about taking part, finishing, and meeting your own targets.

The best runners at those events are full of support and admiration for the slowest runners.

ELR · 28/09/2007 16:56

well i think you can laugh about it but be very proud and pleased with him too, its a great achievement for him

clumsymum my heart is with your little boy. My ds2 is now 12. Two left feet I'm afraid. A couple of years ago he came last in the 800m in the large stadiun where the school held sports day. HOWEVER the whole gallery were cheering him on in good spirit and I was SO proud that he finished at all. So how much harder is a lengthy cross ountry run...shame on the lot of them. I hope your ds is just proud for finishing. Quite an achievement.

motherinferior · 28/09/2007 17:25

I'm with MB - he whopped the arse off all the non-competers. And those who didn't finish.

I'm really impressed. As someone who always came near-to-last on anything like that as a child, I'd like to biff all the laughers on the nose.

salsmum · 28/09/2007 17:31

PATRICK SWAYZE WAS BULLIED AT SCHOOL FOR BEING A BALLET DANCER!
NEED I SAY MORE????????????

bozza · 28/09/2007 17:38

I think that he has shown grit and determination that will stand him in good stead as he gets older. And good that he has his Mum and his Grandma and his headmaster on his side. So well done clumsyson.

And I can empathise with him (my memory goes that far back to entering cross country because every entrant got points for their house despite being a poor runner) and you (because I am the mother of a son that finds a lot of physical activities challenging.

FunkyGlassSlipper · 28/09/2007 17:45

Some people are such tossers!

Good for your son to pick something he wanted to do and stick with it.

He didnt have to enter but he did.
He didnt have to finish when he knew he was behind but he did.

And actually I'd love to come 104th in a running race. I was shite at it at school and loathed cross country.

Good on the headmaster as well.

InMyHumbleOpinion · 28/09/2007 17:56

we3ll, someone had to come 104th, and nobody else got that far, so why the hell shoudl they laugh? Twats.

tiredemma · 28/09/2007 18:02

I think its fantastic that he even wanted to take part.

People who take the piss should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

Well done to your son!!

FunkyGlassSlipper · 28/09/2007 18:36

By the way, if you think your son wouldnt be embarrassed that you have been talking about him then you should show him all of our well dones

Jacanne · 28/09/2007 18:40

Well done to your son! He did far better than I would ever do. Piss takers should sod off!

snig · 28/09/2007 18:44

well done to your ds, what a trooper he kept going to the end, didn't give up, showed true determination. What's not to be proud off? if he were mine i'd be well chuffed!

emj23 · 28/09/2007 18:47

Good on him for finishing! Don't take any notice of such silly people, I bet none of them could do it.

Smithagain · 28/09/2007 20:28

The day I came second last in a running race (at secondary school) was the proudest of my sporting career. Seriously. I was pants at running and the feeling of beating SOMEBODY was just fantastic.

So good for him!!!!

JiminyCricket · 28/09/2007 20:49

I run 10k's and just did a half marathon - my first race i came second to last..its great at the back as you get so much support because people appreciate how hard you're trying and they know they wouyldn't have the guts. |Good on him. Next time I beat three whole people, and the next time 11 (it was a bigger race . I would be really proud.
