To be VERY proud of my ds? Loads of people are laughing ...

Yesterday, ds (aged 8) took part in our county inter-schools cross country running competion.
Now ds isn't an athlete by any stretch of the imagination, but he wanted to do it, and wanted to represent his school. This is a HUGE issue for me, as in the last academic year his behaviour at school was pretty rocky, and I was worrying that he was going off it all together.

But he went to the competition after school, and finished the run. He came 104th, out of 105 who finished.

Everyone except my mum, and ds's head teacher, thinks it's funny he came next to last.
I think it's terrific that he even wanted to do it, and wonderful that he actually finished.

I'm quite cross with everyone

He did really well. I'm proud of him.

He's in the top 100 runners in the County. How many children is that....? Well done I say!

Egg · 28/09/2007 15:34

I would be very proud of him. He did it, it's an achievement to even take part, let alone finish. Bugger the people who want to laugh at him, I bet they couldn't have even finished. Give him a big hug and tell him how proud you are.

OrmIrian · 28/09/2007 15:36

No YANBU. At all.

To want to do it and to actually complete it shows huge determination. Well done clumsymum's DS!

And why would anyone think it OK to laugh at an 8yr olds acheivements

Koshka · 28/09/2007 15:37

Well done to your DS!

I was awful at cross country, and only beat the really bad asthmatic and the smokers who stopped halfway!

My mum didnt care and I did try my best and always made me feel good about it.

Well done you too.

tigerschick · 28/09/2007 15:38

Ignore what anyone else says, it's you and your ds that matter.
Be proud of your ds - it sounds like he deserves it.
Well done him for finishing, and for wanting to do it in the first place

fryalot · 28/09/2007 15:38

YANBU.

He deserves praise, he deserves your pride and he deserves a HUGE hug.

well done clumsymum's boy!

WendyWeber · 28/09/2007 15:43

How fantastic that he chose to do it! And that he finished! Big [angry} to the laughers - someone always has to come next-to-last - bless your boy, he is a hero

I hope he is proud of himself?

SpawnChorus · 28/09/2007 15:46

Jeez...what sort of idiot would laugh? You are very right to be proud of your fantastic DS.

maisemor · 28/09/2007 15:46

I wish I had had a mum like you. Well done for being a brilliant mum and well done for your son doing the run.

Both you and your son deserve a gold star in my eyes {{{Maisemor slapping Gold Star stickers on Clumsymum and her boy}}}.

Anchovy · 28/09/2007 15:52

My brother started running at the age of 35 or so. At the time he looked like a slightly less athletic version of Phil Mitchell.

In the first run he did - a 5k - he finished behind quite a lot of the finishers in the "Women's 60+ category" (I'm not joking!).

5 years later, as a 40th birthday promise to himself, he ran a marathon. Today he looks like a slightly more athletic version of Phil Mitchell.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Good on your boy!

mamadoc · 28/09/2007 15:54

I found academic work easy at school but was useless at sports always last to be picked etc. I can still remember my dad giving me a big hug aged 11 after I finished last yet again in a cross country race and telling me he was more proud of me for finishing that race than coming top of the class because he knew how hard it had been for me. Persevering when it doesn't come easily is so much more deserving of praise. Well done your ds!

NAB3 · 28/09/2007 15:55

I think it is more important that he did it and wanted to do it then where he came. Ignore those who are laughing. They are idiots.

ConnorTraceptive · 28/09/2007 15:59

He did great you should be proud. Would also look for new handy man.

Flibbertyjibbet · 28/09/2007 16:00

He finished!! That is the big acheivement, to keep going even when you know that your finishing is not going to be THE best, but its YOUR best.

SOmeone has to come last and 2nd to last fgs, would the sneerers have rather he just dropped out halfway, or not enter at all and then laugh at whoever else came 2nd to last?

I used to do 10ks for charity. I was slow but I was never quite last. Someone much faster once sneered at my personal best. I told her that its people like me that make her times look good.

RubySlippers · 28/09/2007 16:04

he finished a cross country race
a big achievement
congrats to your DS!

fawkeoff · 28/09/2007 16:08

IMO the important thing is he achieved what he wanted to do.you should be very proud of him....dont listen to the other ppl laughing its only a number...he did the best he could

grouchyoscar · 28/09/2007 16:08

YANBU.

He participated and completed the run. You have every right to be proud.

Well done DS

haychee · 28/09/2007 16:14

YANBU

Bless him and well done!

It must be the way you tell the story that makes people laugh about it because i dont think its funny.

edam · 28/09/2007 16:21

People are so bloody rude sometimes, aren't they?

Very impressed with your ds - doing it in the first place and sticking it out to the end took real determination.

I suppose there is something funny about coming second to last - funnier than coming last, IYKWIM. But not that funny and certainly not when it's a little boy who has put in a huge amount of effort.

Hulababy · 28/09/2007 16:22

I'm not suprised you feel cross. Poor Ds. He should be congratulated for his efforts and for doing his best. Winning is not what is important here, but the willing ness to take part and try bloody hard. Which is what he did.

Good on DS, and good on you for being very proud of him.

And boo hiss to the nasty people who have laughed at him, how unkind of them.

SmartArse · 28/09/2007 16:23

Perhaps people are laughing fondly, IYKWIM? If someone told me, I might chuckle and say ahhhh, bless, etc.

I still think he's a star.

codswallop · 28/09/2007 16:27

i agree
its fab he even di d it

BrownSuga · 28/09/2007 16:27
