Absolutely over the moon to be overweight this morning!

I was class 2 obese in February (ugh, felt terrible) and today, after 5 months of dieting, I've finally hit a BMI of 29 something and officially 'just' overweight.

Next stop - normal weight!

I've lost a stone so far with a similar method but was really reassured to read that you got 'stuck' ar various points. I started off at 18st 12 and I'm 5ft 3 so have a HUGE amount to lose, but I eat 1500 cals a day and have set my Apple watch move ring to 1000 cals a day so should have a reasonable deficit so it's been really disappointing to have been 'stuck' where I am for over a week.

But as you say, it's not linear and some weeks you lose loads and others nothing. I have found being able to see how many calories I'm burning really helpful and have started a workout programme from the Body Project which I'd recommend as well.

I'm doing it because if I'm not pregnant and have been trying for 9 months - but it's good for me to lose weight for my overall health, and a myriad of other reasons as well!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/07/2020 15:08

The stuck weight is just so frustrating. Few weeks I did my weekly weight in and... Nothing🤷🏻
Week later 2kg down.
Yesterday no loss. Today it shows the kilo.
Holding water is just crazy.

Good luck everyone changing lifestyles!

laudete · 13/07/2020 15:15

Well done! Star I wish you good luck with your next weight goal too. :)

amusedbush · 13/07/2020 15:19

Well done! You’re right about it being boring! Over the last year I’ve lost three stone (BMI 40.4 and category three obese Blush down to 33.3) and I have another three to go. I’ve used calorie counting too as it’s so flexible.

I tend to skip breakfast, have a light lunch and then eat what I want for dinner. It’s slow going but I’ve gone from a size 22 to a 14/16 - size 10/12 is the aim Smile

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/07/2020 15:19

Well done OP, fantastic achievement, just wanted to say that to remember to re look at your calorie allocation for weight loss, as you become lighter it takes less calories to maintain that weight as you burn off less when you are carrying less, if that makes sense? Muscle is more efficient at burning calories than fat is but it doesn't balance out unless you are doing a lot of muscle building excercise.

It might explain why you plateau when you are still doing the same exercise/consuming the same calories.

When I was at my heaviest, i was allowed nearly 300 extra calories a day for the same goal as I had when I had only a stone to go and I dropped down to the least recommended of 1200.

MissConductUS · 13/07/2020 15:30

Well done! I put on about 10 lbs during lockdown and am now finally taking it off. The only thing that works for me is calorie counting and tracking exercise calories. I use an app called Loseit that works well for me. If I know I'm going to have to log the calories for a dish or ice cream or a brownie now I'll either skip it or have a very small portion. You get what you measure.

I ran for years then had a torn ligament a few years ago, so switched to walking. It's just healed enough for me to start running again, so now I'm running 3 miles a day.

Wallybigboots · 13/07/2020 15:34

Well done, that's fantastic. I didnt even know there were different categories until I read your post. I have just checked and I'm category 2. I have lost and gained the same stone for the last 5 years so I really need a kick up the bum now.

PineappleJones · 13/07/2020 15:38

@BeansOnToastWithCheese you're doing well so far. Plug your details into a TDEE calculator and make sure the 1500 is accurate. I think you're doing yourself out of calories and you have to start on as high as it tells you (well you don't have to but it's wise!) because that way you don't block yourself off and give yourself nowhere to go, calorie cutting wise, as the lbs drop

ResumetonormalASAP · 13/07/2020 15:39

Yes brilliant

PineappleJones · 13/07/2020 15:42

@Wallybigboots yes I was pretty gutted to realise there were categories and class 2 isn't exactly a brilliant place to be. My BMI was 37 ish.

I don't have any health issues (touch wood and to my knowledge!) but I was really starting to feel this extra weight. Knee hurt, my back kept 'going', heartburn, and just walking through town would mean I'd be a bit breathless when having a conversation at the same time. Oh and my face resembled the moon.

I'm all fine now and my last blood test showed cholesterol is completely normal - so I'll just keep plodding along until I reach 10 stone 5 and see how I feel there

OP posts:
PineappleJones · 13/07/2020 15:46

@WaxOnFeckOff I've been recalculating every 7 or 7lbs and it's been pretty spot on so far thankfully. I was puzzled at what has been two or three complete stalls but decided to trust the process and keep going - I didn't want to walk more as 15k steps is enough for me (I also do the odd peloton session but that barely counts as it really is just once a week if that!) and I didn't want to start tweaking my food to eat less carbs etc as I've told myself I won't do the low carb thing. And it's taught me that this weight loss thing isn't linear at all and there is no nice little 2 lb drop on the scales each week.

And that's disappointing and hard to overcome mentally when you want to see results - and we all want them IMMEDIATELY

you've reminded me to go and recalculate my calories now, let's hope it's not a savage drop!

One of the nice things about using an app like Loseit is that it does these calculations for you automatically. It's just a bit distressing to see my allowed calories per day go down as I lose weight, as I'm needing less as I get smaller and burning less when I move.
WaxOnFeckOff · 13/07/2020 16:00

That's good OP and yes, sometimes there just doesn't seem to be a reason for not losing or gaining or losing lots one week. As you say, as long as the trend is generally down then you are doing it right - congrats again :)

One theory is salt, if you've been having a little more salt e.g. ready meals or maybe soy sauce or something one week, it might encourage a bit more water retention, so not really fat which is a good thing I think overall as it should be lost again reasonably easily.

That's Great OP I felt exactly the same when I got down to BMI 29.9 Now 26.1!!!
Forest1000 · 13/07/2020 16:12

CONGRATULATIONS from me too! Sounds like you've acheived this in a really sensible, sustainable way too. Good luck with the rest of your journey.

XingMing · 13/07/2020 16:19

Adding my congratulations to the pile above! Well done you. And when you reach your goal, celebrate with a really lovely outfit to show off the new body.

tenlittlecygnets · 13/07/2020 16:26

Well done!! Great achievement.

CharityDingle · 13/07/2020 16:27

Well done!

squanderedcore · 13/07/2020 16:37

@PineappleJones thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to write all of that out! It's v much appreciated. You explain it all so clearly, especially the bit about weight loss not being linear. And that link is very useful too. Thank you again and best of luck with the next stage! It's good that you are stopping and celebrating all the stops along the way though!

I also have creaky knees and have put a stone on under lockdown (was overweight before too) so need to do something about it. Your thread has really given me some much needed inspiration!

Chickychickydodah · 13/07/2020 17:03

Congrats and well done👍🏻

ZombieLizzieBennet · 13/07/2020 17:17

Congrats!

DianaT1969 · 13/07/2020 17:32

Wow! You've done brilliantly! Well done.

BeansOnToastWithCheese · 13/07/2020 17:33

Thanks @PineappleJones :-) I was hoping to stick to 1500 cals and then drop to 1250 and eventually 1000 when I'm nearly at my target weight - but maybe you're right and it would be better to start higher. I'll check out the calculator. Thanks! And congratulations!
