To be dreading a winter lockdown?

Stillnaturalmineralwater2020 · 13/07/2020 10:23

I feel like the prospect of a winter lockdown is just looming over me at the moment, not being able to see family, being stuck indoors/WFH in bad weather... I'm really concerned about the schools potentially closing again and the impact on work and my kids' education.

Is anyone else preoccupied by this? AIBU to be so worried?

It doesn’t concern me. If it happens, it happens, and I’ll enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed this lockdown 🤷‍♀️

Starbuggy · 13/07/2020 13:46

I think it will take a lot more to push us into lockdown again (rightly or wrongly). The repercussions on the economy, education and health will be felt for years to come. People will also be less compliant a second time around, especially when socialising in gardens is less appealing due to the weather.

I will enjoy not commuting in all weathers (I have a 20 minute walk to the train station) but the cost of having heating on all day will be significant (my home is naturally quite cold and when sitting still working you really feel it more than when generally pottering around). Queuing outside essential shops in the rain also less appealing but I’ve learned to avoid that by going first thing anyway,

We cannot afford another lockdown. Regardless of if things get totally horrendous, locking down woudn't work, not again. The government would have to find different ways around it.

weepingwillow22 · 13/07/2020 13:58

The problem is if we don't lock down and cases rise exponentially people will start to take things into their own hands. Those that can (generally the wealthy) will carry on working at home and hone educating their children whilst key workers, the self employed and the low paid will be forced to go out to work and be subjected to the ever increasing risk of infection.

The long term impacts of this even from mild cases are now looking really nasty with impacts on the brain and the heart as well as the lungs.

Right now no one can say for sure what will happen, therefore every scenario you could think of is a possibility, which is very scary when you think about it that way.

Logically it's likely to get worse over winter, but we have also had time to prepare so shouldn't be quite the same level shit show 😂.

The only way I can feel calm about this is (for me) to prepare for the worst whilst hoping for the best.

I've been buying Xmas gifts in the sales (lots of snuggly winter stuff), making sure my cupboards are well stocked and keeping an eye out for craft/hobby bargains to keep us busy. My theory is nothing will go unused anyway.

It's perfectly natural to feel anxious about this, it's a major event the likes of which have not been seen in a lifetime. I'm a bit shocked some don't feel even a little worried about the situation, it seems like a coping mechanism to me.

Why would you want people to go about being worried all the time over something that may not happen and even if it did it isn't something I can change? It isn't healthy to be constantly worried and anxious. If I was I would be seeking help.

Miniminiminimini · 13/07/2020 15:10

I don’t think we’ll lockdown in the winter anything like what we have. As many PP have said the monetary cost is too high.

I think social distancing, masks (I’m in Scotland) will still be in place at Xmas. I think things like Xmas markets will either not go ahead, or look very different to what we once knew. You can see your extended family for Xmas but work parties discouraged, etc.

I think we may move back and forward in phases (eg vulnerable asked to shield again) depending on “waves”, WFH being default for those who can, and social distancing measures for another year or so.

laudete · 13/07/2020 15:42

I think short-term local lockdowns are more likely than another national lockdown. I also think the government may allow schools to be more creative with their plans, in order to keep them open. For example, staggered half-days for younger students (with work topped up online), tacking a few holiday days on to half-terms for deep cleaning, attending school in shifts (morning/arvo/evening), etc. We can't make the old school buildings larger but we could space out how many kids are physically there/going in and out.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 13/07/2020 16:54

Those saying ‘it won’t happen’ probably said the same about the first lockdown and said the virus was nothing.

Flowers009 · 13/07/2020 17:00

Summer lockdown killed me because I like to go festivals, bars ect
I'm okay with the thought of winter lockdown, I like staying in on cold rainy days.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/07/2020 17:04

I don’t think there’ll be another lock down.
It wasn’t strictly safe to come out of the one we’ve just just had. The death rates are still soaring. Yet they’re still planning on opening swimming pools and gyms ect ect.

dontgobaconmyheart · 13/07/2020 17:11

I wouldn't say i am anxious over it in such a way that it preoccupies me OP but that doesn't mean the thought of such a thing isn't worrying in itself.

Whilst its nice that some people have had a jolly good time during this lockdown, talking about hoping for another one and how cosy a winter one sounds is so crass, when it has all come at the expense of so many peoples pain. I deeply hope there isn't another lockdown because if there is it means there will be thousands still dying an awful death and yet more families who aren't so privileged as some on here are, in financial ruin and mental health dire straights.

Let's hope it doesn't come to that again for the winter, as the flu season impacts already on lives lost, and not being able due get outside due to inclement weather will badly affect mental health and childrens development, not the mention the start of the academic year.

OP all you can do is take it a bit at a time, adhere to social distancing guidelines and hygiene practices and we will see.

LadyCatStark · 13/07/2020 17:11

I don’t think it’ll happen but if it does it’ll be a disaster for me as I suffer from SAD and I’ve finally learnt that forcing myself to get outdoors, soak up any daylight I can and exercise is the best way for me to feel better, alongside supplements. “snuggling” may sound lovely, but it’s the worst thing you can do if you struggle with your mental health.

GameSetMatch · 13/07/2020 17:20

The government won’t lock us down again even if it’s the right thing to do! It’s cost them too much they won’t risk the economy worsening even if people’s lives are at risk.

Hellokitty82 · 26/07/2020 23:00

I'm concerned that the government will be guided by financial rather than science if a second lockdown was required but covid has made so many people redundant- and there will be more before the year is out the economy would probably never recover from this.

I am however preparing and my DP and I have cleared all our junk out from the understairs cupboard and we are creating a winter pantry. Not going mad stockpiling but basically just getting in what we actually will need and would use anyway and my Christmas shopping is probably 70% done ✅

I think the combination of social distancing and big ques and availability of stuff will be very difficult for people so I'm on it now 😂

I'm not that bothered because we hardly go out in the winter anyway. I love to stay indoors snuggled up, with blankets and hot chocolate, watching films over Xmas time etc

I can't really comment on the OP as I'm hoping there won't be a second spike and another lockdown.

However @Frazzled193736 Can you honestly do this for days on end? We sit to watch a film and are done the moment it finishes. I can't imagine snuggling, drinking hot chocolate, watching films would keep anyone occupied for more than a day.

ThatDamnScientist · 27/07/2020 17:07

I don't think we will lockdown and I don't think schools will close. Not because everything will be under control (in fact I expect quite the opposite) but because the government won't want to pay anymore out.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 27/07/2020 17:13

I doubt there will be a lockdown of the same degree, DH and I can see there there being an age and condition based lockdown while the rest of us continue to go about keeping the economy ticking along slowly. Dunno, maybe not though. I just know it's going to be horrendously difficult with the common cold season coming up!

Drivingdownthe101 · 27/07/2020 17:14
@Dominicgoings would you like to just not leave your house for an entire winter? Just me?
I’d fucking hate it. And my three children, aged 6, 5 and 1 would be climbing the walls. Children of those ages aren’t really renowned for ‘snuggling’ for hours on end.

WanderingMilly · 27/07/2020 17:47

I would have thought a winter lockdown is highly unlikely. We may have spikes in various places and therefore local tightening for spells of time but no, a whole lockdown is unlikely.

Schools couldn't shut again, people need to get back to work, the country cannot afford another lockdown, we'll be seeing a huge recession as it is.

I am no expert (just personal opinion) but watching various countries it seems to me that the virus 'spikes' and then falls away. If a region hasn't spiked before lockdown it does so after lockdown has been lifted and regardless of other measures; I think we are learning more and more about the virus and even if a vaccine hasn't been found, more treatments will be found, plus more understanding will lead to a different type of management of the problem.....
