To be dreading a winter lockdown?

Stillnaturalmineralwater2020 · 13/07/2020 10:23

I feel like the prospect of a winter lockdown is just looming over me at the moment, not being able to see family, being stuck indoors/WFH in bad weather... I'm really concerned about the schools potentially closing again and the impact on work and my kids' education.

Is anyone else preoccupied by this? AIBU to be so worried?

I wouldn't worry. We can't afford another lockdown and I doubt boris will call for another one. I don't think many would follow it anyway.

As harsh as it sounds, I think the government will now be thinking that each person's health is their own to deal with. If they want to isolate from others as much as possible, they can, but the government won't force them. Its going to wreak havoc on the NHS though, so it's going to cause problems regardless.

There will likely be another spike, it's just what happens in winter. I just don't think they'll try to stop it spreading this time.

oakwood13 · 13/07/2020 11:32

I think lockdowns will be localised. I agree though that to have restrictions in winter is far worse, especially as we persist with putting clocks back in winter. My afternoon walk has been very important during this period.

WanderingMilly · 13/07/2020 11:35

I'm not worried about it, I don't think a whole country lockdown will happen again. There may be local ones though. However, the economy won't be able to cope with another major standstill, and the government will have more things to worry about (finances, huge unemployment and BREXIT) than locking down again.

zingally · 13/07/2020 11:38

Eh. I don't think a national lockdown of the level we've had will happen. The country simply can't afford it. Saying that though, the government seem to have been pulling money out of their arses for different things during all these, despite claiming to have no money for anything previously!

There might be local lockdowns, and school closures. But nothing like we've had.

Personally, I wouldn't hate a winter lockdown... Snuggled in at home while the weather is bad would be quite pleasant! No wintery commutes! Although it would be a bummer if it fell over Christmas.

Jaxhog · 13/07/2020 11:45

As a shielder, I can see me being in lockdown over most of the winter, but I doubt there'll be a general lockdown. Local ones maybe.

But that's only if EVERYONE is vigilant and follows the guidelines.

Jaxhog · 13/07/2020 11:49

Every man for themselves, eh? Until you need someone else's help e.g. a blood transfusion. What happened to a little sacrifice for the common good? Or does that stop with virtue signalling?

TheVanguardSix · 13/07/2020 11:49

I'm not at all worried.
I'll cross that bridge if we even come to it.
I think henceforth, they'll be regional, if any future lockdowns are necessary.

Thefab3 · 13/07/2020 11:51

@HilaryBriss , I hear you on the crap weather and we have a lovely house full of fireplaces which is just so nice and cosy in winter!
However I work from home but can’t with three dcs off school all the time. In my country they won’t have been in school /childcare for 6 months by September. I’ll lose my job if they don’t reopen or keep closing and I’m not alone..

WandaApplebaum · 13/07/2020 11:52

I’d quite like a winter lockdown

namechangedforunpopularopinion · 13/07/2020 12:03

Sadly you've hit the nail on the head. It's all about what it looks like these days, not what it actually is.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 13/07/2020 12:05

I'm not sure I see the point in worrying about and dreading something that a) hasn't happened yet and b) may well not happen.

Hellokitty82 · 13/07/2020 12:09

@Loveinatimeofcovid

That all sounds fab
But if it happens it happens I guess
It's out of our control

My cousin is quite senior at her local hospital she said people will continue working at home and measures will be put in place

However the thought of another full on lockdown and the effect on jobs, education and shops etc is quite frightening

I must admit OP I've been thinking about it and therefore building up my new pantry - my understairs cupboard is now all shelves out Smile

ButterMeCrumpets · 13/07/2020 12:15

I am not worried and don't think there will be a widespread lockdown ever again given that the economy has tanked because of it.

Someone once gave me a great bit of advice in that you should only worry about the things you have any control over otherwise it is pointless.

Dominicgoings · 13/07/2020 12:17

‘Just think of the possibilities, this very well could be the best, snuggliest winter of you life!’

Hmm
KeepingPlain · 13/07/2020 12:22

@Jaxhog

Pretty much. I never said it was a good idea, but I think it's the one they will go with unfortunately. Hopefully I'm wrong.

OryxNotCrake · 13/07/2020 12:24

The thought had occurred to me and it’s not a pleasant prospect. But none of us can know how it’s going to pan out, so I’m going to enjoy my summer as best I can while taking sensible precautions and ensuring I keep my cupboards stocked just in case!

Loveinatimeofcovid · 13/07/2020 12:26

@Dominicgoings would you like to just not leave your house for an entire winter? Just me?

Alfiemoon1 · 13/07/2020 12:35

I am not worried will cross that bridge when I come to it. I don’t think there will be a national lockdown again just regional. I am quite liking working from home and would prefer it to travelling to and from work in the cold and dark

My only concern is for my year 10 ds education so hoping school doesn’t close again it’s a big high school and I have no idea how they are going to manage when they all go back in September

Dominicgoings · 13/07/2020 12:36

I’m a nurse Love. And pretty damn traumatised by what I’ve just lived and worked through. The idea that a winter lockdown is a good opportunity for fwuffy marshmallows and snuggles is nauseating to be honest.

IndecentFeminist · 13/07/2020 12:43

Personally not phased. But dreading it for my mum, as the last gave her a nervous breakdown and she is currently struggling on a psychiatric ward. Another would probably finish her off.

NotIncandescentWithRage · 13/07/2020 13:21

Snuggled in at home with the decorations...

Oh how twee Hmm

BakedBlossoms · 13/07/2020 13:23

I much prefer it to a summer one; we're in a flat with no garden and it becomes an unbearable sweatbox.

I love being indoors in the winter; cosy with tea, books, and films. I have a 4 yo and he loves it too.

BakedBlossoms · 13/07/2020 13:24

But I wouldn't worry; there isn't going to be a second lockdown. The country can't afford it.

PrincessButtockUp · 13/07/2020 13:26

I'm concerned about whether the NHS could cope with a spike in COVID cases on top of the usual winter pressures, and I worry that our economy is precarious because we are too reliant on people buying "stuff". SARS and swine flu didn't have a worse second wave, if I remember correctly, but Spanish Flu was much worse second time around.

I guess people worry about those things that feel unpredictable to them.

BakedBlossoms · 13/07/2020 13:29

SARS and swine flu didn't have a worse second wave, if I remember correctly, but Spanish Flu was much worse second time around.

Which is irrelevant given this virus is not flu and is therefore unlikely to behave in the same way.
