My right hand that is.

Carpal tunnel. Been getting worse since christmas. Plague meant Ive ignored it since march and now its got really really horribly painful and I simply dont know what to do with myself. Nope to mention the fact that I am very very right handed and its making life quite difficult.It really fucking hurst.
Obv going to ring the bloody GP tomorrow but assume it’ll be years before anyone can actually inject it or cut it off properly. So in the mean time I’m thinking I could watch a YouTube tutorial and have a go myself.
There’s a bottle of Buckfast under the sink i could neck first and I’d do it in the bathroom so easy cleaning up afterwards.

Menopause link could be a thing. Timing matches. It’s steadily got worse over the last 6 months. Stupidly so over the last fortnight.

I'm sad to hear the pain and discomfort are so very horrible. The effects seem so devastating tonight that I believe you'd be justified in either attending an A&E department, or talking through the situation with NHS111 (the web service can arrange a call back) or with a truly excellent listening service. All these services are staffed with people who really, really want to listen and help, in my experience.

Until you can get treatment, try acupuncture they might be able to help you somewhat.

For a little relief have you tried massaging this point (three fingers from hand, between the tendons), several times a day?

I think people are underestimating the power of the buckfast. (We don’t really have it down here in southern England. Apart from the monks that make it. They have loads of it && I imagine they’re permapissed Grin).

Surely if you keep buying the Bucky you can keep yourself feeling no pain at all for as long as necessary? Wink

Still really hurts. Going to work.. will phone gp, occ health, accupuncture, osteopath, physio and the axe shop. Someone will cure me.

Worth finding a local physiotherapist who specialises in carpel tunnel syndrome to see if they can do a few sessions to relieve it until some semblance of the normal world returns?

Get them to test your oxygen levels in your fingers whilst holding your hands in the air. I was spared a lot of unnecessary surgery from this being done. I 'had' carpal tunnel - had surgery in my left hand - decided not to have my right arm done as it hadn't really worked and they wanted to do my elbows too!!! Turns out I've got Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. It's frequently misdiagnosed as CT. Do you spend a lot of time sat typing? Do your splints have steel in them to stop your wrists bending whilst you sleep?

I got terrible carpel tunnel when pregnant (my hands literally didn’t work. DH had to do up my buttons, shoe laces, carry my cup of tea so I could drink with a straw) it sucks shit.
It has never fully gone away but I can do things for myself.

Splints at night helped, losing weight, exercise to increase blood flow helps reduce the swelling.

Also get your cholesterol levels checked.
Mine is mostly due to xanthomas (cholesterol deposits on my tendons) thanks to my shitty genetics. (Familial hypercholesterolemia)

I think you need to stamp your feet a bit and insist the GP sees you and takes you seriously because you are in a lot of pain. Don't be fobbed off or feel guilty (you shouldn't) because, y'know, Covid. I know lots of people are giving lots of helpful advice as alternatives but you need to see your doctor and you have a right to if you're suffering! Good luck x

Okay this might sound a bit woo (and a week or two ago I’d have agreed), but have you tried vitamin C?

Hear me out...

My sister, who is proper woo (anti-vax etc) has been banging on about high dose vit C for a while, but I’ve just quietly ignored and privately rolled my eyes.

About 18 months ago I developed really painful carpal tunnel in both hands after a sustained period of doing intense DIY work. It flares up all the time because I do a lot of gardening and DIY. In the last few months the pain and numbness wakes me up every hour during the night, so it’s been getting worse from lack of sleep too. I’ve been using ice packs and ibuprofen most days, it’s been agony. I’ve also had sciatica on and off for 18 months in my right leg.

About two months ago the knuckles on the ends of my index fingers went all knobbly and “witchy” - just like my Nanna’s. She has rheumatoid arthritis, and my mum has the knobbly hands too. Then a month later the tendons on my little fingers started to sort of slip out of line, and I had to flex my hands for ages in the morning to get them working again.

I was worried about it being RA (I also had several unexplained sharp pains under my ribs and in my ovaries - or that’s how it felt), so I called my mum to see if she has it too and what she’s done about it. She started on about the vit C (and some other woo stuff that I disregarded) and said that her knobbly fingers and lumps on her hands had gone since she started taking it.

I thought, hell, worth a go, the pain was becoming unbearable and really disruptive. I’ve been taking 1000mg vitamin C supplement every day for a week, and - I don’t know how else to put it - there’s no pain anymore. The knobbly knuckles are receding and the tendons aren’t “slipping” anymore. The sciatica hasn’t bothered me at all and all the unexplained pains have gone. It’s completely bizarre. I mean it literally changed within a couple of days.

I’ve been keeping a diary of all the symptoms, and last week it was a huge laundry list of things, while yesterday all I could write was “no pain, little bit of stiffness and swelling in the morning but quickly goes, very slight tingle still in end of right index finger”.

Obv I can’t say 100% it’s the vit C, this is not a controlled trial, but it’s worth a go, right?

I’ve also ordered a high dose turmeric supplement and fish oil, as both are supposed to be good for inflammation and RA. I’m hoping I can get these early symptoms under control and avoid having to medicate.

I have also been doing 16:8 daily fasting for a few months now, which is supposed to help with inflammation, as well as yoga, but honestly the biggest, craziest difference is since trying the vit C.

It’s very early days, and I’m curious to see if the turmeric helps further, as apparently some studies have shown it to be as, if not more effective, than ibuprofen, but without the side effects on the stomach lining.

I am not looking forward to admitting to my sister that she was right, if this turns out to be a long term solution. She and my mother take even higher doses I think, which I might try after a month or so of 1000mg and see what happens.

I would get your gp to ring you back the same day as you are in pain. You shouldn't have to wait until next week. Last week
I rang my gp in tears as had a bout of sciatica and ongoing severe pain waiting for hip replacement. Naproxen not effective anymore, I have been on it 3 years! But gp prescribed Tramadol for pain relief same day, which is helping. Hope you get relief soon.
