My right hand that is.

Carpal tunnel. Been getting worse since christmas. Plague meant Ive ignored it since march and now its got really really horribly painful and I simply dont know what to do with myself. Nope to mention the fact that I am very very right handed and its making life quite difficult. It really fucking hurst.
Obv going to ring the bloody GP tomorrow but assume it’ll be years before anyone can actually inject it or cut it off properly. So in the mean time I’m thinking I could watch a YouTube tutorial and have a go myself.
There’s a bottle of Buckfast under the sink i could neck first and I’d do it in the bathroom so easy cleaning up afterwards.

I vote you get a very large glass, open the Buckfast and knock back a couple of painkillers with it, I'd say the whole bottle would do it.

If I'm in a shit state with my RA, codeine and wine solves the problem effectively and the world becomes a lovely place for an hour or two. Confused

Just don't tell your GP!!

CheesyWeez · 12/07/2020 20:37

Mine drove me mad, woke me up at night and was painful all up my inside forearm all day.

I was waiting for my operation date and went to see an osteopath about it in the meantime - she cupped my elbow in her hand and for 30 minutes did different movements of my wrist and shoulder while holding the elbow still.

Wrist has never hurt since. Best £50 I ever spent. I gave away the wrist splints and cancelled the op.

Otherwise, film the amputation OP and let us have a look. Grin

Slamming it in a car door sounds most appealing.

I know it's a different situation, but naproxen was the first drug they gave me and it did about as much use as taking vitamin tablets. I'd be ringing whoever's first thing and asking for something better (a mix of paracetamol, ibuprofen, dihydracodeine and diazepam was what finally worked in my case) while you wait for an injection.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 12/07/2020 20:44

That should just say whoever, this autocorrect is run by skynet I swear.

MuthaHubbard · 12/07/2020 20:46

I had calcific tendinitis in my upper arm and got to the stage where if they said they couldn't do anything, I was considering the axe option. It was like toothache but in my arm. Two lots of steroid injections eased it for a little while but surgery was the only option that brought relief (as in to get rid of the build up calcium pressing on my tendons/nerves, rather than the full arm)

Holothane · 12/07/2020 20:47

Personally I’d use a Liston knife first, longer blade and pointed at end usually very sharp, but seriously get Gp appointment pain like this is hell I have arthritis and it’s been hell this week.

dobbyssoc · 12/07/2020 20:49

Can you not call 111 and explain how much pain you are in?

BloodyBollockingHell · 12/07/2020 20:52

It's very good at bunging you up though, bloody stuff.

bluefoxmug · 12/07/2020 20:54

hoe does it react to warm or cold compress?
for me heat was great relief, whilst cold made it worse.

caringcarer · 12/07/2020 20:57

You have my upmost sympathy. I had this about 9 years ago. It was bad but i managed and then it deterioated really quickly. I could not even pick up a cup at the end. I had the surgery as an outpatient and was in and out of hospital within 1 1/2 hours and they make you sit for 45 mins after op before you can go home. It did take me almost 6 weeks before i could go back to work though and trying to pull up your knickers and put on a bra with one hand is shit. Dh had to help me dress and wash my hair. It was almost 3 weeks before I could use a knife to eat with. It was well worth getting it done though as I have had no issues with it since. Whatever you do don't get wound wet as it increases chances of infection. I put a plastic bag over my hand before shower and also held hand outside of shower. You cant even see a scar where the lazor cut now.

Mysa74 · 12/07/2020 20:58

I'm with @cheesywheez, try the osteopath.
I had regular appointments with mine because of a back injury that he fixed. Then I broke my leg and ended up with cubital tunnel in both hands (same as Carole tunnel but hand, wrist, little finger, ring finger and one side of the middle one), really painful at first, then pins and needles then they started to go numb. Mentioned it to Graham who did some weird twiddley things with my elbow and shoulders, clicked something gently and the feeling came back like magic, haven't had a problem in the 8 years since and I suffered for months and months...

Clearyweary · 12/07/2020 20:58

Go to your GP! The Trust I work for is doing carpal tunnel surgery again now, so although the waiting liat may be fairly long, it may not be static. Good luck!

Cindie943811A · 12/07/2020 21:00

I’d be interested to hear how you get on. A few months back I heard on the news that surgery for carpal tunnel had been taken off the list for elective surgery. As I’m showing signs of getting it myself , aggravated by the use of a crutch, I took special notice. I truly hope non surgical treatment is successful.
Meanwhile I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you re your call tomorrow. 👍💐

UnaCorda · 12/07/2020 21:03

I have an excellent good santoku knife you can borrow.

UnaCorda · 12/07/2020 21:04

Bugger it. An excellent santoku knife. Hmm

Piggles39 · 12/07/2020 21:08

Naproxen is useless.

Voltarol gel lavishly applied works well for me, GP gave me a massive supply of cocodamol but the gel works better.

I’m currently waiting on cancer surgery (deferred since April due to Covid) so no idea what the chances of CT surgery are any time soon, but going to guess not good, sadly. My GP won’t even refer me until I get through the cancer treatment Sad.

I feel your pain!

AntiHop · 12/07/2020 21:11

Sleep with the splint on, that will help.

TheCanyon · 12/07/2020 21:13

@whereistherum

For giggles, try and do it with a tin opener, film it and then put it on youtube or tiktok
ooh and then also post the aftermath on reddit r/eyeblech DO NOT look at that sub if you're squeamish
BloodyBollockingHell · 12/07/2020 21:17

I don’t have much hope of swift treatment. Bastard plague. But will try to get added to some list at least.
I’ve just had annual leave. I actually have no idea how I’m going to work tomorrow

OP posts:
YorkshireParentalPerson · 12/07/2020 21:21

I sleep with a splint on, but have also seriously considered amputation!

The osteopath sounds interesting, might have to give that a go.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/07/2020 21:23

Fortunately mine was temporary in pregnancy but on top of being near housebound with SPD and a burning pelvis that didn't work, having numb or tingling hands that didn't work either really was the final insult.

My bastard hands would wake me up every single fucking hour and I'd have to shake them out through the pins and needles then heave my gargantuan body over to the other side ready to repeat the next hour.
It was so blissful to have a new born baby that let me sleep for a luxurious two, indulgent hours at a time.

ComeBackIntoTheGardenMaud · 12/07/2020 21:33

How old are you? I ask only because I was told that it's often (don't ask me how) a menopausal thing. Mine was terrible for a long time, although sleeping with the splints on helped, and then somehow it went away.

eenymeenymineymo · 12/07/2020 21:33

sympathies & flowers being sent your way Flowers Flowers

I too have carpal tunnel in both wrists/hands & it incredibly painful at times, esp. at night. Pins & needles in my fingers almost all the time nowadays.
I see an Osteopath who massages to reduce the inflammation in my wrists/forearms & she has recently suggested a wheat pack (but I'm using a hottie, lasts longer); I've also ended up going back to GP for a referral for surgery.

My job (supermarket) exacerbates the injury but this pain is now affecting my ability to do other stuff like lifting the jug, peel veges, garden. Lots actually - & I still have quite a few years before I can retire.
Ive also tried some topical ointments (like Deep Heat/liniment ointment etc but with arnica, hypericum, calendula, echinacea, peppermint oil in it) - is there anything near you that may sell this product.
