My husband called me to tell me off for yet again getting it wrong. Quite common really.... I've ordered a replacement tyre Goodyear perf 2 whilst my other tyre is Goodyear perf (not 2). Same size and specs as far as I know. Please help if you think it's not that big deal as he lets on?

I defer to DH on tyres. But generally isn't it best to have matching pairs so they perform the same way?

Nottherealslimshady · 12/07/2020 11:05

We always replace in pairs, I wouldn't want one nearly worn down and one brand new. DHs supercar you have to replace all 4.

lampygirl · 12/07/2020 11:11

Always replace in pairs. I used to replace I to the back too (RWD) but the latest car is staggered size so can’t do that any more. Don’t do single tyres.

Liliuk · 12/07/2020 11:11

I damaged my tyre was only 1 months so they are pretty even in wear. As far as I see same specs make and model one is 1 and the other 2. That's the only difference

HowManyNameChangesNow · 12/07/2020 11:13

I would go with your choice

EvilPea · 12/07/2020 11:16

Same tyres on the same axels. Swap good fronts to back and replace front if possible.

Tyres are so important. They are the only part of the car in contact with the road.

bungaloid · 12/07/2020 11:16

I don't think it's a major big deal, it looks like Perf 2 is just a slighty improved rubber compound etc (i.e. it lasts slightly longer), assuming it has a similar tread pattern and isn't a winter vs. summer vs. all-season kind of difference.
I'd pay more attention to how much tread depth you have remaining on the side you aren't replacing (assuming you have 2-wheel drive). I had 3-4mm difference once as I got an unrepairable puncture so only got 1 new tyre. Once one side had worn down to legal limit and the other was still good, I could feel a bit of a difference, especially in the wet (if I pulled away quickly from a junction etc.). Sometimes my traction control would kick in etc. More steady normal driving I'm not sure you would tell.

Hingeandbracket · 12/07/2020 11:17

Yanbu

EvilPea · 12/07/2020 11:17

Tyres are increasingly becoming model specific which causes some cars issues. So despite being the apparent same size and exact same spec. They aren’t.

Tootletum · 12/07/2020 11:20

If the 1 and the 2 designate seasons then obviously that would be a problem. Otherwise if they're the se spec and same wear should be fine.

Witchend · 12/07/2020 11:28

You want to have the same tyre or it can wear unevenly and you'll need to replace sooner.
Surprised the garage didn't say that though, so maybe they are close enough it doesn't matter.

Liliuk · 12/07/2020 11:30

Thank you all for your message. I replaced a tyre that was virtually new and damaged it with hitting the curb (which caused extra agro on top of this....) So with lockdown, wear is even.
He has admitted shouting at me was wrong and that we could move tyres back to front & do tracking as less an issue and tyre pretty new at the back. 1&2 is not season related, it's really just newest model of the same.... thank you!

Personally I insist on matching tyres across an axle and across all 4 unless it can’t be helped.

HamsterHolder · 12/07/2020 12:17

As has been said tyres should match on an axel and newest should go on the rear, both measures will significant reduce the chance of spinning under harsh cornering or braking.

Gobbycop · 12/07/2020 12:23

Lots of nonsense here.

It's not essential to have same tread pattern ect on the same axel, hardly anyone would tell if they're different.
If it was important or a matter of safety it would be a requirement by law.

Also why would you put the better tyres to the rear? Would you do that on a front wheel drive car, don't think so.

Mainly coming from you

In some countries it IS actually law I understand. It’s certainly possible to tell under wet braking if you have mismatched tyres across an axle

Also why would you put the better tyres to the rear? Would you do that on a front wheel drive car, don't think so.

You always put the new tyres on rear except where a staggered setup prevents this. This is recommended by ALL tyre manufacturers. The reasoning behind it is that it’s much easier for the average driver to deal with understeer rather than oversteer. Your comment proves you haven’t got a clue what you’re talking about.

IamMaz · 12/07/2020 12:42

Shit!!!! I can't get that annoying Perf with Surf advert out of my head now!!!!
Angry

SimonJT · 12/07/2020 12:49

On dry driving tyres that don’t match across an axel isn’t a big issue and is legal in the UK, it is however noticable when driving wet, snowy or icy conditions. Different tyres will have different levels of wear, so the difference becomes more apparent throughout the life of the tyre.

New tyres should also go on the rear as it has less effect on the drivers steering.

tanstaafl · 12/07/2020 13:05

It makes no difference OP.
If it was a different tyre Goodyear wouldn’t be calling it ‘2’ of anything, it’d have a new name.

Assuming
a) you’ve bought the same size and speed rating as the ‘Perf’
b) you don’t drive around like you’re making a Top Gear video
Just crack on.

What does matter is the tyre pressure.

Liliuk · 12/07/2020 13:12

Thank you! Makes sense. It's same everything but 1 & 2. In fact kwickfit didn't sell the other model hence why I didn't question the validity of this!

OP posts:
SimonJT · 12/07/2020 13:23

Oh god you went to kwik fit, please never ever trust them with your car.

Liliuk · 12/07/2020 13:28

@SimonJT thank you. Why? I have to say as an ignorant woman in all car matters I tend to trust big labels like that but probably silly

OP posts:
isthismylifenow · 12/07/2020 13:31

Is your spare the same as the original tyre?

If so, use that and use the new perf 2 as the spare.

Tyres have a shelf life so you should always use your spare at some point.

Elai1978 · 12/07/2020 13:33

Oh god you went to kwik fit, please never ever trust them with your car.

I agree wholeheartedly! You can’t get shitter than Kwik Fit fitter!

SimonJT · 12/07/2020 13:35

They’re renowned for telling car owners x,y and z need doing when they don’t so don’t use for mot etc. Sadly as you are a woman they are more likely to use that tactic.
