House name ideas for an ugly home 😂

Maddie2019 · 11/07/2020 23:30

Hi all.

We have recently moved house, which is a number 3. The problem is we have lots of other houses around us with other number 3s and it all gets a little confusing (post going to wrong houses etc).

We were thinking of adding a house name to make things easier. The issue is, we do not live in a grand nor pretty house! It’s a basic pebble dash 2 bed end terrace.

It would look silly with a grand or too nice name 😂 Has anyone got any ideas?! x

It will if done through street naming and numbering within your local council

Not according to their website it won't.

@malmi

Not according to their website it won't.

If you go through the proper process it will:

Adding or changing the name of an existing house or property
If a property has a number, you can add a name to it without applying to us. This means:
• the name is not part of the official address
• you must still display the number and always use it in the address
• you need to be careful that there is not a property with a similar name nearby
If you wish the name to form part of the official address, or the property doesn't have a number, you will need to apply to us. This means:
• if you have a number, you must still display it and always use it in the address
• we will make sure there are no properties with a similar name nearby
• we will send approved changes to:
◦ internal council departments
◦ Royal Mail
◦ certain statutory bodies
◦ the Emergency Services

Don't forget that if you give your house an unusual name, you'll actually have to give it out to people in order to write to you Grin Imagine you're on the phone to someone important, they want your address and you have to say 'My address is Fugly House/Bedlam Towers, 3 whatever street...' They could think it's a wind-up or that you're trying to hoax them or something.

If you couldn't care less about people always asking 'Pardon?', or having to explain/give out unusual spellings, then knock yourself out.

That said, 👏 to the posters who said Wits' End for an end of terrace, that did make me laugh!

monkeyonthetable · 12/07/2020 07:28

On my way to work I pass a small house nearby called 'High Hopes'. I love that. It fits a house that's not grand but wants to stand out a bit from the crowd.

Aria20 · 12/07/2020 07:36

@mamansnet that's very true about having to give out your address on official forms lol so depends how bold you are!

Also if you sell the house in the future, a silly name could either appeal to people with a sense of humour or put people off lol.

I love wits end Grin I'd probably go with something to do with Willows as it is obvious why you chose it and inoffensive - not very funny though.

I was hoping someone would quote Partridge!

3, Magic Number Cottage

I read an article a while ago where Phil Spencer reckoned adding a name to your house can increase its value by £5k.

A decent bathroom and kitchen I can understand, but a name, really?

MsJuniper · 12/07/2020 08:32

I feel your pain OP. I live on a small road off a bigger road. If you think of a capital T, we are half of the cross bar at the top and the bigger road is the stalk and the other half of the cross bar. This means there is always lots of confusion around which houses belong to which road.

There is also a block of flats opposite, and the resident of the flat which is numbered the same as our house seems incapable of finding her own address on a drop down menu, so we get TONS of post for her.

Anyway, I'd go with "Willow House" if you have a willow tree outside.

Belle End ??

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 12/07/2020 08:34

Weird House?

AdultierAdult · 12/07/2020 08:35

Dashing Pebbles?
Bland One on the End?

Is there a max character count?

BruceAndNosh · 12/07/2020 08:42

If it's mostly a delivery problem, I'd go for a sign saying 3 This Road.
Then on a smaller piece of laminated paper underneath, write NOT That Road or Tother Road

Porridgeoat · 12/07/2020 08:44

Threesome

Gizlotsmum · 12/07/2020 08:49

We have a similar issue we are one street name but actually face onto a different street name (built after our house and completely different construction). It totally throws delivery drivers (but not the post office). We are going to get a sign that says x one street... We do have an unofficial house name (previous owner) used by council but no ont else....

Hellohah · 12/07/2020 08:52

Bag End

TimeWastingButFun · 12/07/2020 08:54

Ditto put the road name on the sign that you all do. I wouldn't give it a random name because that won't stop them putting your post in the wrong house since I doubt most auto fill online order forms etc (where you select your address from the drop down list) will be able to cope with a number and a name.

The Thatch Grin

What about The Carbuncle?

Seriously though, would having one of those house number signs with your surname above it not be an easier fix? So "Jones Family, Number 3" would surely solve most day to day issues if the postie/delivery guy sees it, and thinks "ah, this parcel is for the Smiths, so this is the wrong address"?

ShebaShimmyShake · 12/07/2020 08:56

Clive.

ZaZathecat · 12/07/2020 08:57

Duncarin'

Gumbo · 12/07/2020 08:57

Sounds like the name needs humour or irony to make it work...

Chateau Maddie?
Drab Manor?
Pebbledash castle?

Ah, or just your surname + House. Smith House, Bloggs House, Plantaganet House or whatever.
SauvignonBlanketyBlank · 12/07/2020 09:00

Fookem Hall

SauvignonBlanketyBlank · 12/07/2020 09:02

Actually saw that name on a small terrace in Hornsea.Made me smile.

MissBattleaxe · 12/07/2020 09:03

Just call it Willow Tree and have a sign done with the number 3 and a little willow tree on it.
