Tesco delivery

I have just noticed that Tesco has now made all their delivery slots one price, all at £4.50.
Does anyone else think this is taking the Mickey?

You could look at it that way but I’m assuming overheads have gone up dramatically due to this pandemic and a huge upsurge in demand. They will have taken on lots of extra staff to cope with all the orders, maybe this change is to make it all cost effective.

Pixxie7 · 11/07/2020 05:21

Fair point but the demand seems to be declining now so staff will be let go.

I don't see that when I try to book a slot. The prices haven't changed. Can still get a £2 slot on Wednesday at 3-4pm Smile

FrolickingLemon · 11/07/2020 05:26

No, I can get a delivery on Monday for £2. May be trialling something new in your area? It's still showing extortionate amounts for weekend deliveries on mine now though. £7. I just wouldn't pay it. Waitrose delivery is free. As is Iceland.

Ohjustme · 11/07/2020 05:26

I dont see it either. I see slots from £2 right up to £7.

PJsEveryday · 11/07/2020 05:29

In normal times, some of the slots were as much as £7. So some slots will now be cheaper if they are all £4.50. Also, the cancelled the delivery saver fee during lockdown so they will have lost money there. Even when I had to stay up to midnight to get a slot and could sometimes only get a slot 10 days or so in the beginning, I would still have been happy to pay the monthly fee. I think making all slots the same cost might mean the uptake of slots is more evenly spread across the day (work/other time issues aside). But the delivery saver is well worth the money and you get any time slot you want.

FredaFox · 11/07/2020 05:31

My mum has used them for years and has a delivery saver certain days have always And times been 4.50 and over
Her regular delivery drivers have said demand is not waning and they think this is it now. Many people who tried delivery are sticking to it
My mums store has had a new van and taken on extra staff which they think will stay until at least after Christmas if not permanently
One once told my mum they don’t make a lot on deliveries as the delivery fees just cover the cost of fuel drivers pickers packers and vans/ maintenance

Pixxie7 · 11/07/2020 05:32

Maybe a trial but ir says to make it fairer for everyone. Mind you i am looking a month in advance but never seen £7 for weekends

I have just booked my next slot (thanks for the reminder) and the hour slots are still a variety of prices and the priority slots are still £2

Pixxie7 · 11/07/2020 05:36

It’s from the 3rd of August.

I wouldn’t agree the demand is declining OP but actually increasing. I work in a supermarket and our online orders have gone through the roof for a sustained period. Plus extra delivery routes have opened up and therefore more delivery slots are available which are all being snapped up.
They have taken on lot’s of new staff so it’s not likely they will be letting them go anytime soon.
Online orders are very labour intensive and so I think it is fair to standardise delivery costs. I do think it is good to offer a lower cost delivery charge though when spending a certain amount of money and for less in demand times of the week.

Pixxie7 · 11/07/2020 06:01

I have no problem with the price as I have also wondered how they manage to do it for £2.00. It’s the issue of paying the same irrespective of when it is delivered.

Redcrow · 11/07/2020 06:07

I pay for delivery saver so it doesn't impact me now but I think that's a good idea, I used to hate to have to pay up to £3 more for slots that fir around my shifts. I guess it's also because so many people have been at home on furlough etc so cheaper weekday slots have gone quickly and not more expensive weekend ones

HeartZone · 11/07/2020 06:11

YABU to not use sainsburys then!
One hour slots and mon- Thursday if you book afternoon/ evening slots and spend £100 it’s free delivery! Even if this is a high spend for you try fortnightly deliveries?

Pemba · 11/07/2020 06:12

I am still seeing slots with all different prices, from £2 up to £7. Maybe it's just your area?

I know that doesn't help you though! Have you tried a 'flexi saver slot' if available (gives a window of about 4 hours for delivery, cheaper) or click and collect is quite good, and often free of charge. I know you will still have to travel to get the stuff, but it is a lot less hassle than going down all the aisles yourself inside the shop.

Redcrow · 11/07/2020 06:17

I've just been on to book my next delivery (6th aug, I'm booking that far ahead now) and the prices are the same as yours all £4.50

Pixxie7 · 11/07/2020 06:20

It’s not the cost. But thank you for suggestions.

lorn195 · 11/07/2020 06:20

@Pixxie7 I have just seen the same thing (all slots @ £4.50) so unless it's a nationwide trial ??? I don't mind as I pay up front for my delivery Saver and yes in the past some slots have been £7, but over the year I usually save quite a bit.

Rosebel · 11/07/2020 06:34

Why are they taking the mickey? They're a supermarket, there to provide a service but also make money. Demand for online deliveries is still sky high here.
£4.50 isn't even an hour's wage. Like I said they want to make money.

Redcrow · 11/07/2020 08:32

If its not the cost what is the issue?

LipstickTaserrr · 11/07/2020 08:39

I can't go past the 31st of July on mine but it's still showing different price ranges before then.

RedCatBlueCat · 11/07/2020 08:47

I thought delivery was a loss leader for the supermarkets. Maybe the increased demand and offerings mean they need to make changes to be sustainable?

I'd just be glad if I can get a slot if we have to go back into isolation again. We had to do it right at the start, before all the community support was up and running, but after all the delivery slots were added, and before the catering suppliers were doing home delivery. It was pretty miserable.

Pixxie7 · 11/07/2020 22:06

Redcrow@ the issue for me is I can understand the increase in price, it’s still good value. However I think the price should reflect when the delivery is.

OP posts:
PinkiOcelot · 11/07/2020 22:09

I can’t see it either OP. Slots from £2-£7 here

netflixismysidehustle · 11/07/2020 22:13

Mine is showing a variety of prices too. £7 on Sunday mornings Shock
