IWork for a council in E England. NEw boss has just emailed to say that she has checked my time sheets - on a couple of days last month i have written start time as 8am. ( work from home since covid) I did not however send in my 'log on' email till 8.01. I am being asked to go back and amend my time sheet.
Wtf?? Do I say don't be ridiculous that is a complete waste of taxpayer money or do I just play along? Worth saying that I often work a bit over and don't log this as feel it's petty to put for example 5.07 on a time sheet. Wwyd? Aibu to think jesus get a bloody life??

I would adjust all my morning log on time sheets for lockdown to 8.01 as requested.

In the spirit of accuracy I would adjust my evening log off times to include my overtime at the end of the day.

7mins a day is about half an hour a week. Over 15 weeks, that’s a day they owe you!

Make sure you send an email thanking your new boss for raising it, and copy it to HR.

Enjoy your day off in lieu!

What a waste of the managers time though, to have to check all emails were sent and when they were sent and then follow up any missing/late ones.dint they have any work to do?

Her1mum · 10/07/2020 19:15

In my experience, it's always the managers who aren't capable of managing anything else (important) who stoop to this level of pettiness. I'd be very inclined to reply saying it actually took you two minutes to log on so you're amending it to 7.59. And make sure you don't send your logging off email a single second after 5pm.

swelchphr · 10/07/2020 19:16

If they want to be that particular, log your actual log in and out times, including if you worked over.

Mildred007 · 10/07/2020 19:29

I used to work somewhere where if you logged on 1 minute past your start time they docked you 15 minutes! Angry
I would start logging every minute past 5pm you work too - play them at their own game

Etinar · 10/07/2020 19:30

once worked with a firm who asked me to come in an hour earlier than my contracted start time of 8am. i said ok but because i had to get 2 trains and they were fewer than rush hour i said it would be voluntary as i might be late now and again. fine for a few weeks - then there were problems with the train service - and guess what?!....they started pulling me up for being "late"... the reality of the world of work is that the bosses can basically do what they want because employment rights only kick in after you have been there for 2 years and they don't even need a reasonto sack you. it wil never change because employers have all the power and employees virtually none.

cherish123 · 10/07/2020 20:49

I would just amend it.

GYNisaliarWTF · 10/07/2020 20:56

@ComDummings

Do it to milliseconds so 08:01:25
This. 😂
MamaAm · 10/07/2020 21:03

Say - oh of course, by the way how do I log the extra time I do?

pollymere · 10/07/2020 21:03

Change your timesheet to be 8.01 but also 17:08, 17:05 etc...which is the moment your computer turns off. Next week, set a scheduled email that sends at 07:58 everyday (you can set this anytime!).

Talia99 · 10/07/2020 21:12

While the sending of a scheduled email sounds funny, where I work this would be seen as timesheet fraud and gross misconduct. I strongly suggest you don’t do it. At the moment you are in the right - if you start lying about your start times (which is what that would be), you won’t be.

mylifestory · 10/07/2020 21:36

I'd logon at 759 every day from now on and not even reply to the email. Waste of breath/time!

tttigress · 10/07/2020 21:54

Erm, not read all the replies, but surely it take more than one minute to switch the laptop on and VPN in? I would have thought this was considered as "work"

I have had some knitpicky managers in my time, but that takes the biscuit!

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 10/07/2020 22:15

Hi. Manager here. They sound inexperienced or micro manager types. I would ring and have a chat. You could also ring HR and speak with them!

JaJaDingDong · 10/07/2020 22:21

companies will want workers back in the office ASAP after lockdown has totally lifted, so they can keep more of an eye on things

Bizarrely, or maybe not, productivity at our place has increased since everyone has been working from home. Sickness is down too.

Which is a shame, because it means they don't need to call us back into the office anytime soon.

exaltedwombat · 10/07/2020 22:56

Possibly an automated system?

Though there are lots of jobs where 'start time' means 'ready to work time', not 'walking in through the door time'.

Astella22 · 10/07/2020 23:18

The event viewer on your laptop can show you exactly when you signed in and out each day, you can use this to support you amended timesheet

QueenCT · 10/07/2020 23:21

@exaltedwombat definitely. Mine is logged on and ready for 8am, not walking in at 8 so logging on has to be done on my time (it doesn't take too long, I'm usually in work 15 mins before I start)
I also can't wander off and load the washing/answer the door/take extra break time, it's all timed. I mean it's strict but the fact of being late meaning losing your commission does mean it's very clear!

RainbowMum11 · 10/07/2020 23:32

I once had to pull someone up because she would sign out by the office clock and then back in by her watch - often up to 10 mins extra lunch; she was also consistently late every single morning but absolutely made sure she left in time.
I wouldn’t have pulled her up if she was super efficient in the time that she was working but sadly she spent more time shopping o line and Facebooking and messaging people.
She was made redundant (I tried to commence implement disciplinary actions but my senior officers refused).

I feel Microsoft teams has been designed for this kind of spying. That light has to be green allllll day. No consulting books, toilet breaks...

You think that's bad? Skype for Business has a tagging feature which sends a pop up whenever someone's status changes! It's obnoxious and I was horrified but amused to see that my line manager had basically everyone tagged as there were a bunch of notifications through out her trying to show me a PowerPoint presentation.

This is also available in Teams. I have my direct reports tagged. I couldn’t give a rats ass when they log on and off, as long as work gets done.

I tag them so that I know if I can give them a quick call - if I check their status and they are in a meeting or a call, it will flash that they are available when they are out.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/07/2020 10:23

Surely no-one thinks they can't go to the toilet during working hours in case their status light shows them as inactive?

buttersidedown · 11/07/2020 11:09

I worked somewhere like this. If we were a minute late we would be docked 15 minutes pay. So people decided they would just go back to the staff room for those 15 minutes. Also, they would clock off at 5.01 and get paid the extra 15 minutes. It’s a ridiculous way to work and I feel the employer eventually loses out, but they deserve it for being so petty!

Thedogneedsawalk · 11/07/2020 11:43

I worked for a charity in an admin role. I have diabetes and was due for my annual review. Boss said I couldn't go in work time (it meant leaving 2 hours early), despite the HR manual saying otherwise. Took annual leave for appointment - then, oh dear, the eye test made my eyes so so dizzy that, er, I couldn't go into work the next day, so sad, and had to call in sick... sometimes petty revenge is VERY satisfying.
Yes - loss of goodwill leads to very unproductive employees.

AlexaShutUp · 11/07/2020 11:45

Petty and ridiculous, but I would just go along with it, and start recording any overtime as well.
