How often do you wash your baby's toys?

I tend to give them a proper clean every few days with Milton, rinse them if they get dropped on a not very clean floor etc, but just been talking to my friend and she said she cleans them with Milton after every use, plus dettol sprays soft toys after every use.
Now I feel like a total slattern!
AIBU for thinking this is a bit much or am I just trying to find excuses for my slovenly behaviour? Grin

Your friend is mad!

I only started cleaning kids' toys after they got dropped in mud or had food stuck on thrm

Bb2019 · 09/07/2020 11:53

Madness. I occasionally clean them. Only if visibly dirty or they've been outside. Our house gets a weekly clean and surfaces/floors as needed but never with antibacterial cleaners. Firm believer in exposing my baby to all sorts of antigens to build up the immune system.

DappledThings · 09/07/2020 11:54

Erm, never really. Unless they've had some contact with wee, point or vomit.

MamaPip · 09/07/2020 11:54

Same as JanewaysBun and it’s just a run over with hot water maybe some fairy if it’s particularly dirty ! Germs are good for them helps build up their immune systems.

ForeverBubblegum · 09/07/2020 11:57

My second is 10 months, I'm doing well if I can stop her chewing on her brothers shoes.

Pre 6 months I stralised chew toys, but she didn't use them much then anyway, as she was later getting teeth. Teddies go through the wash when they seem grubby, and plastic toys go in the dishwasher every now and them, but mainly only if they've been outside or had something spilled on them.

TheOrigBrave · 09/07/2020 11:58

I never cleaned toys unless they got blood, wee, poo, vomit, mud or old food on them.

Seriously, spraying Dettol on soft toys?

TwoKidsStillStanding · 09/07/2020 11:59

Um. If baby has been sick on them? Or if they look dirty? I also dust the top of the Jumperoo if it looks like it needs it. I don’t have the time or inclination to spend most of my day anti-bac-ing the Hide n Squeak eggs.Grin

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 09/07/2020 12:00

Oh good!
I'm gonna relax a bit more then haha
I never spray Dettol and stuff around him as if figure that's a bit much
He's not getting to mix with other babies or many other people .so needs to build an immune system somehow!

Never did, though I had a friend that sterilised a ball I bought for her baby in the steriliser. It came out as a misshapen, melted, but bacteria free lump.

jomaIone · 09/07/2020 12:05

What do you think will be on his toys if they're just in your own house?

Shortfeet · 09/07/2020 12:06

Never

bluefoxmug · 09/07/2020 12:07

soft toys in the washing machine whenever it was needed and hard stuff in the dishwasher ocassionally.

your friend is bonkers + I wouldn't want anyone chewing on any disinfectsnt

absolutehush · 09/07/2020 12:07

Oh thank god! The first few replies had me worried. Only when the toy has been dropped outside or has got sick/food/wee/poo on it...

I never even considered doing anything else!

InkieNecro · 09/07/2020 12:12

Hang on, I do remember putting the giant ikea shark in the washing machine now. It apparently magically got outside and into the paddling pool last year before I spotted it.

Apart from that, I didn't. Didn't even cross my mind, like giving dc1 tap water from 6 months and a friend asked if it was cooled boiled water. Didn't occur to me to do that either!

Footlooseandfancy · 09/07/2020 12:17

Usually give things from the charity shop a quick wipe over but otherwise never (unless they get vomit, poo or wee on them).

Playgroup and soft plays are disgusting (though hopefully cleaner post Covid) so if the kids survive those conditions, a bit of toast crumb on a soft toy is fine.

Summer41 · 09/07/2020 12:20

Never unless they are obviously dirty!

I do clean bath toys every few months because they get that black mold on them though.

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 09/07/2020 12:21

I cleaned mine when they were sick on them, or when another child was visiting and sneezed all over them.

Otherwise unless you have pets chewing on them or something, the only germs on them are those from your childs hands which are in their hands and eyes anyway, unless you're disinfecting their hands every 2 minutes as well

Moopoohootoo · 09/07/2020 12:21

Never

OverTheRainbow88 · 09/07/2020 12:23

I’ve only really cleaned them since corona and if they get dropped out somewhere that looks uNclean!

GreyishDays · 09/07/2020 12:23

Unless they’ve had raw chicken on them or been handled by someone ill I really can’t see why you need to. Unless they look grubby.

Clartymidden · 09/07/2020 12:24

I don't 🤷‍♀️🤣

1300cakes · 09/07/2020 12:30

Never, unless it had visible dirt/bodily substances on it. If it was a soft toy I'd throw it in the wash. If a hard toy I'd just wipe it off.

You sterilise toys with Milton every time they touch the floor?! I mean that's every time they are played with isn't it, unless your dc hover in the air while playing?

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 09/07/2020 12:55

Sorry should have specified, our kitchen floor which has puppy dog paws in and out all day

On the playmat/in the living room etc I don't bother

OP posts:
zigaziga · 09/07/2020 12:56

I don’t really, not unless they look particularly dirty.

If they look dirty and are plastic I’ll put them in the dishwasher, if they are fabric they’ll go in the washing machine. Most things never get washed however.

2 kids and I have never owned any Milton.

employeewoes · 09/07/2020 12:57

Never, unless they get wee, poo or vomit on or are obviously dirty from bring dragged or dropped.
