To feel bereft now I've finished Downton Abbey?

I felt like that too!

OP posts:
BlueTide · 08/07/2020 22:33

Yes, I've felt like that too. I think its known as 'boxset depression' though it's not an actual depression. Having something lined up (a new box set, a good book, something else I've been wanting to do) for once I'm done with a new box set helps.

littlegiant · 08/07/2020 22:35

How long did it take you to get into it? I watched a few episodes and I wasn't taken in. I know it can't be for everyone but it does seem like something that would be to my taste 🤔

SacreBleeurgh · 08/07/2020 22:38

Aaahh yes this is me! With feeding each of my DDs I’ve chosen a box set and watched it from start to finish. DD1 was criminal minds, DD2 was downton abbey! LOVED it - think it may be one of the few things that stays consistently good throughout. Need to get hold of the newest movie for my fix.

Mary46 · 09/07/2020 13:29

Its super. Did you see the film was great.
I was sad too when it finished.

ineedaholidaynow · 09/07/2020 13:33

Got the DVD boxset for my DM to watch during lockdown. She doesn't have access to the internet so has to rely on DVDs. I am now trying to think what other boxsets she would like

coffeetime11 · 09/07/2020 13:36

Other dramas are available, perhaps not with such beautiful costumes and settings, but with better scripts.

PlanDeRaccordement · 09/07/2020 13:39

You could watch Belgravia. That is recently released mini series and was written by Julian Fellowes, the author of Downton Abbey.

Ethelfleda · 09/07/2020 13:52

A massively emphatic YANBU from me.

I felt the same way, OP. It’s really did feel like it left a huge hole behind in my life.

I just started watching it again from the start.
SPOILER ALERT

In the good old days when we still had Matthew Grin

Ethelfleda · 09/07/2020 13:54

Others I have watched:
Peaky Blinders
Outlander
Jane the Virgin
Killing Eve
Normal people
Pretty little liars

Brefugee · 09/07/2020 13:55

try Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. They're fab.

ineedaholidaynow · 09/07/2020 13:56

@Ethelfreda they are all very different from Downton Abbey.

My DM got muddled up with all the discs in the boxset and the first one she watched was the car crash, so a big spoiler for her!

ZaraW · 09/07/2020 13:58

Bereft is a bit dramatic YABU.

Pippin2028 · 09/07/2020 14:00

I feel your pain, and I don't think we have many shows on the same scale as downton abbey so it's hard to find something to replace it. Belgravia was a nice watch but not quite the same as Downton! I actually found downton a bit dull at first but once you get into it and see the kindness and trials of the characters it's brilliant

TeenPlusTwenties · 09/07/2020 14:05

I'm watching the reruns on ITV3 (or wherever they are). One episode a night on weekdays.
It is better second time around as I can fast forward through the plotlines I don't like (namely the police/prison ones).

DevilsSpawn · 09/07/2020 14:10

Rewatch it again. I feel lost after ozark..

GotOutOfBedOnTheWrongSide · 09/07/2020 14:23

I think I'm going to start watching call the midwife! Maybe you could give it a go? If your into police things try line of duty on BBC iPlayer it's brilliant X

CrimeCantCrackItself · 09/07/2020 14:26

The Paradise is a similar type of thing. Larkrise to Candleford? I have these on DVD for when I need something gentle but entertaining.

Keeva2017 · 09/07/2020 14:30

I just finished season 4 of Poldark on Netflix and feel the same way. In fact I’m talking like a 19th century Cornish Lady Grin Googling season 5 but can’t seem to find anywhere to watch it. Unless it’s not out yet???

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 09/07/2020 14:38

I felt the same way. Came to Downton Abbey late. Watched the entire thing in around 6 weeks. I did watch Belgravia which was all right but nowhere near as good.

Are there any other period dramas that wont leave me disappointed or are my expectations unreasonable after Downton?

ZaraW · 09/07/2020 14:39

I borrowed season 5 of Poldark on DVD around six months ago from a friend.

Keeva2017 · 09/07/2020 14:48

Thanks @ZaraW! Il have to wait for Netflix I suspect.

DevilsSpawn · 09/07/2020 14:55

I started rewatching downtons after about 6 or 10 months sinve i finished it. Im thinking of skipping episodes i find painful (death of lady sybil and matthew crawley 😭)

jessycake · 09/07/2020 15:37

yes , I feel that often with a series, last time it was Shitsel

GinDrinker00 · 09/07/2020 15:39

I felt like that. I re watch it every couple of years. Wish they’d do a one off Christmas special.

MarshaBradyo · 09/07/2020 15:41

I really liked the series and only just got round to all of it it last year. Really didn’t like the film version though,

Enjoyed Belgravia the book, haven’t seen it, shame if it’s not as good.
