What is it with female artists going on about their vaginas in music?

I quite enjoyed a Cardi B song my Dneice was listening to so i went down a rabbit hole listening to some of her other stuff. Every song was "my pussy" this and "my pussy" that.

I'm not a prude but I think it's crass. It's primarily an American thing from what I can tell. Cardi B isn't the only woman that does it.

AIBU to think it's cringe, stupid and that they're objectifying themselves?

So in summary, she likes to give blowjobs all day long and she wants the men to give her his money instead of his girlfriend and kids, and because she's got a big arse, tits and lips.. men will cheat with her and pay her rent.

It's not good role modelling really is it? I wouldn't want my DD thinking that's something to aspire to.

Don't listen if you don't like it. But censoring women talking about their own bodies they way they want to is anti feminist and so is saying its OK for men to but not for women.

BabyLlamaZen · 07/07/2020 17:56

@GreytExpectations it sounds like it's pandering to men and their fantasies. But that's just how I see it.

Then parent her well. But censoring women just sends the message across that men are allowed to say things but women aren't.

BabyLlamaZen · 07/07/2020 17:57

And I think it's gross when men do it about themselves too!

Liliith · 07/07/2020 17:59

I don't actively listen.

I quite enjoyed the sound of her "I like it" song that I heard my Dneice listening to so looked her up on YouTube out of curiosity and was genuinely shocked.

I don't believe in censoring women as I feel it goes against trying to get equality. If a man can sing about his dick without critism then why can't a woman sing about her body?

You thinking a woman does it to pander to men is a very old fashioned way of thinking. Do you also disagree with women wearing sexy lingerie?

Liliith · 07/07/2020 18:00

I abhor the fact that men do this, which is why it's shit to see women now doing the same.

That's fine then but you don't critise men for "pandering" to anyone when they do it?

I criticize them for being disgusting creeps.

I find it sad, that so many modern so called singers, have to use these terms in songs, Most singers today are rubbish, their so called songs, are usually morose and non tuneful, and everyone sounds the same somewhat.

But sadly, rubbish of all kinds makes money now.

lovelifehope · 07/07/2020 18:25

Do they really think it’s empowering? It isn’t, just makes them selves sound ridiculous. Poor song writing skills.

Liliith · 07/07/2020 18:27

A quick Google search revealed copious other female rappers who do the same thing. Nicki minaj, Iggy Azalea, Megan Thee Stallion etc.

All high profile women in the music industry.

It's fair enough saying just don't listen to it and that's fine, but the problem is that it is appealing to the younger generation and they will listen to it.

Would nobody be just a bit mortified if you heard those words pounding out from your pre teen/teenage DD's bedroom?

It makes me uncomfortable to imagine my children listening to this, singing along, normalizing hypersexuality.

Well, obviously not because the power structures involved mean it would make absolutely no sense to say that.

Feminism is about liberating women, not encouraging them to adopt dysfunctional behaviour that perpetuates their objectification and subjugation .

GreytExpectations · 07/07/2020 18:33

not encouraging them to adopt dysfunctional

Empowering women is also about not telling them how to behave. Can you really not see the irony in that?

Absolutely this

Judging purely by those lyrics she sounds like she has about three brain cells to rub together, and believes prostitution is somehow a career that others will truly envy her for. Hopefully most young women would aim a little higher than this. Why on earth anyone would write a song about this I have no idea, she is not doing herself or women in general any favours. It contributes to the poor education of young men (being most likely to be in the age range to listen) as to how to treat women, and panders to their desires - but the worst thing is, the singer probably believes it is empowering for her, when in fact it is exactly the opposite.

I can get it is probably a created character, but I'd love to hear the lyrics they would write later on in life when they have no income and no booty to earn it with - would she still be so aggressively competitive about how baggy/wrinkled her bits are compared to everyone else's, and want money for it?!

BillywilliamV · 07/07/2020 18:35

I rank this sort of stuff with a toddler saying " poo" to get a reaction, its just tedious and unneccesary!

Liliith · 07/07/2020 18:38

Pre teen and teenage children rapping along to lyrics about their vagina and giving blowjobs isn't empowering, and that is what's happening.

Being against that isn't being anti feminist.

Young girls are the primary audience and the lyrics are grossly over sexualized for the people they're reaching.

There is such a thing as an 'off' button.

Liliith · 07/07/2020 18:52

Me choosing not to listen to it doesn't help the fact that millions of young girls will be choosing to.

Re: the vulva/vagina thing, surely they're talking about the whole organ, not just the lips? So vagina is correct.

The bank balance is the motive.
Liliith · 07/07/2020 18:57

As she has a little girl herself I would be interested to know how she would feel about her own daughter listening to and repeating her lyrics in years to come.
