To hate the excuse “she got out before we could spay her”

With cats

It’s never, “we wanted one litter” “or we thought she would make a good mum” even though these are awful excuses its always “she got out before we could spay her and we didn’t know she was pregnant”

Someone I know, her cat has just had kittens. I haven’t said anything as it’s none of my business, but I know this would be her excuse

Seriously, spay your cats! They can get pregnant from 4 months of age. That isn’t fair to what is essentially a teenaged mum. Vets will spay from 4 months. No need to let her have a season unlike dogs

Neuter your toms. They will roam for miles fighting other males if left intact. They will stalk females and yowl for them.

Yes which is what I think it’s odd

Most animals who aren’t in groups, will chase off the offspring when it’s time for them to leave

It’s a genetic thing so that the mother gets her own territory back, and the young will find their own.

It can be upsetting for the young as they are confused to why their mother has turned on them, but it’s natural.

It even happens occasionally in group animals especially if it’s a male like elephants.

They will allow females to stay within the herd, but males are chased off once they reach maturity

I've got/just had a mother/son pair and they loved each other, but unfortunately the kitten died suddenly yesterday at only 11 months. The mum seems really upset.

(Actually she's not his mum but she thinks she is. She was feral and had two kittens which I tamed and homed. On the same day I replaced them with two feral kittens of the same age and she didn't seem to notice the difference:) )

My mum had a mum/son pairing.
They hated each other.
The mum would viciously attack him whenever he came close.
After a couple of years they tolerated each other but they never, ever got on.

My two neutered toms are litter brothers.

They tolerate each other.

The three queens I had previously weren't related and they loved each other to bits! All torties (which are my favourite). I doubt I'd get a tom cat again - I find them harder work than queens. They're always scrapping with each other and squalling to be in or out. Never seem to settle down for five minutes (it's not being aa kitten - they're 8)

One of our cats came from rescue. Her back story was that she was not spayed by her original owner & was pregnant by the time she was 5 months old. She nearly died in delivering the kittens as she was so tiny herself & ended up with an emergency c-section & her rejecting the 3 kittens. Owner couldn’t pay the vets bill so hence the rehoming. When we took her in she was 7 months old & completely traumatised/feral. It took a year of patience & loving to build her trust & now she is a gorgeous, happy, 6 year old. It can be very traumatic for a kitten to have kittens so it is actually kinder to spay them as well as being the responsible thing to do.

See my first cat was like that, an absolute tart, so I kept her in and then got her spayed, my cat now (the one who had the accidental litter) had no signs whatsoever of being in heat, literally none. Any future cats will therefore be spayed ASAP based on current puss!
