To think that July/August feel more like early Autumn now?

I'm not a summer hater, so I say this with no joy, and it might just be where I am (up north, coastal) but does anyone else feel like this?

The last few years it seems to have gone from Spring (warm and fresh) straight to early Autumn (mild temps around 15,cloudy, cool breezes and rain, all the flowers going over very quickly thanks to rain and wind, evenings feeling darker due to clouds)

In May we had the paddling pool out, it was roasting, and had that "on the brink of summer" feeling, then the rain came in and that was it

I've always lived up north and the weather has always been changeable, but I can't remember the last time I had a long, hot, dusty August dog day.

DH says it's like we have monsoon seasons now instead - lots of dry hot weather in spring, then the muggy deluge
@2coffeesinbed - that's the calendar I follow.

It's always much nicer in Ireland in May than later in the summer.

I can’t find any proof of a Celtic calendar so I think I’ve muddled it up with something else

Proof is in the names of the months. August is Lughnasa (or (Lúnasa), named after a god. September is Meán Fómhair, which means Mid-Autumn and October is Deireadh Fómhair, which means End of Autumn
It’s there in the months in Welsh too. July is Gorffennaf from gorffen (end) and haf (summer).

I'm a school teacher, and we often find that the weather is at its hottest/sunniest in June and July. And then when we break up in August, it often feels like Autumn is on its way.

However, my birthday is the very end of September, and it often seems like summer has a final hurrah around then. I'm VERY often able to do "summery" activities for my birthday.

That's interesting. I wonder is it the same in Scots Gaelic and Breton. Isn't Cornish a Celtic language too?

AdoptedBumpkin · 07/07/2020 20:19

The weather is definitely changing these last few years.

ElephantsAlltheWayDown · 07/07/2020 20:24

I feel like I'm living in a different country to you all. I'm in the south east and the last two summers have been unbearably hot and dry for months on end, from May to September. I was just commenting to DH today how the drizzly weather is a nice change this year.

Greydove28 · 07/07/2020 20:25

@LEELULUMPKIN

It's hammering down where I am and I have just put the heating on, NW England

If I hear one more person say "oh have a staycation this year" I won't be responsible for my actions.

Brilliant. I think exactly the same. Can't imagine holidaying here to have 2 weeks at the beach with it pissing down.
Maryann1975 · 07/07/2020 20:26

We definitely had a heatwave here (midlands) the first week of the school Summer holidays last year. It was soooo hot. But I do know what you mean, we generally get better weather in May and June than in August.
I am so fed up of rain at the moment, I feel so cooped up in the house. Preschool children love a wet walk in the rain. School age children, not so much.

Suzie6789 · 07/07/2020 20:27

Yes I’m in the NW and summer does seem to be happening early in April & May.
Even in the year with great weather (2018) it went full and rainy in second week of summer holidays and that was it- summer over.

Absolutely agree! It was definitely 36 degrees where I was in July last year!
bananaskinsnomnom · 07/07/2020 20:30

I agree. I think the English summer holidays need to be bumped forward. Finish end of June and go back mid August. Make October half term a two week break though otherwise the Autumn term will be horrifically long. The best weather always seems to be earlier now!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/07/2020 20:45

I’m in NE Scotland and today the rain has been hammering down to the point the cat was hiding under the sofa. It’s currently 11 degrees, rain forecast until Saturday.

It’s really grinding me down since we are still only allowed to see people outside our household outdoors!

BabyLlamaZen · 07/07/2020 20:46

August is always a bitter disappointment tbh!

cardibach · 07/07/2020 20:48

@OchonAgusOchonO yes, Kernowek (Cornish)is very closely related to Welsh.
I shall research the months in those languages!

Good on you. I look forward to receiving the fruits of your research Grin

Totally agree - April / May felt like summer. Hoping for a second summer!

Porcupineinwaiting · 07/07/2020 21:06

Not where Iive (Sheffield). Last year there was nice weather in June and quite bit of July and two years ago June, July and quite a bit of August was baking hot and dry.

TacosTuesday · 07/07/2020 21:11

Totally agree. By August these days I feel done with summer, and so does August. It's a nothing-ey month full of wasps and rubbish shop sales full of tatty clothes! September is much more sure of itself. The light is better, the wasps are on their way out and sunny hot days are surprisingly frequent but feel like a bonus.

PumpkinPie2016 · 07/07/2020 21:17

YANBU I am in the NW and the last few years April/May/June have been the hot/dry months. We are on well water and it's those months where we have been very careful with water.

July can be mixed but August definitely starts to feel more Autumn.

By the time I return to school in September, I feel like Autumn is in full swing (although we can get some nice days in September).

Having said all of that, we went to Cornwall last year-last week of July/first week of August and it was like being abroad. Glorious sunshine for a fortnight.

user1471510720 · 07/07/2020 21:26

If you understand science, the Earths orbit and the Suns ‘seasons’ with a little help of mankind’s own adjustments it’s hardly a surprise the shifting weather. Of course you could just live. In Australia and you would be warm all the time👍

Fishfingersandwichplease · 07/07/2020 21:34

We got married in May for this reason! Night start drawing in and by the end of August, it is dark quite early so feels like winter is on its way!

BetteDavisWeLuvU · 07/07/2020 22:53

Agree with your DH on that in some respects, although last year it was nice late July and through August - cool and rainy in June/early July as usual though!
