If THIS starts spreading, can we all agree to shut all the flights down in/out of China?

The Black Death...

I’m not usually one for tinhat theories but it is starting to feel like 2020 is a B-list budget horror film.

If the Bubonic Plague gets up and running again the economy will be the least of our worries.

Coronavirus will seem like a dream in comparison.

OP posts:

Comes from eating marmite

I think you meant Marmots GrinGringrin]

RuggerHug · 06/07/2020 13:01

One of my friends was travelling around the world a few years ago and got stuck somewhere because of the plague and it was too cold for the donkeys to get down the mountain. 90% she was still in Europe at the time. Remains the strangest reply I've ever gotten to a 'how are things your way?' text..

Baaaahhhhh · 06/07/2020 13:01

Porcupineinwaiting Mormons possibly works too !!

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 06/07/2020 13:02

What is it with all these scaremongering..."oh I am just innocently drawing your attention to another potential disaster to make your already frazzled minds spin a bit more "posts? For christs sake just get on with living..you get one shot at life and you are a long time dead, What will be will be.Drives me insane these posts..I mean what if you got knocked over by a bus next week? You cannot forsee things so do you and us a favour and just well...........never mind ..carrry on as you were and I will shut up and move on too!

Nousernameforme · 06/07/2020 13:04

@HesterShaw1 The one in black death is particularly special iirc

BigChocFrenzy · 06/07/2020 13:21

"Comes from eating marmite"
😫
That's me at high risk of bubonic plague then ?

However, I've never committed cannibalism, whether of Mormons or anyone else
So maybe I'll be OK

TreezaMendoza · 06/07/2020 13:39

Is it easily diagnosed? Imagine going to A&E with it and some doctor tells you it’s just a bit of flu and you’re overreacting. Then sends you home and we guess the rest.

But it’s true that a lot of people worldwide are becoming antibiotic resistant.

Anyway, thanks for that, cheered me right up. Oh. Would social distancing work against bubonic plague?

Mistymonday · 06/07/2020 13:55

If only humans would stop eating every creature that moves, fgs! I am blaming the meat eaters for this proliferation of zoonotic diseases. Hmm

Porcupineinwaiting · 06/07/2020 14:12

If the people of Mongolia didnt eat meat @Mistymonday they'd starve to death, it's not like you can grow many crops at that altitude and in such dry conditions. The people who are eating marmots are doing so because they need to eat, not as some sort of exotic delicacy.

Davodia · 06/07/2020 14:14

It can be treated with antibiotics. If you get the pills within 24hrs the chance of death drops to only 10%. It certainly can’t be “cured” in the sense that you’re guaranteed to survive.

rosiethehen · 06/07/2020 14:43

I don't even have the energy left to worry about this.

Yes because in Mongolia it’s so easy to eat a Vegan diet 🙄.
MrsTerryPratchett · 06/07/2020 21:00

@Porcupineinwaiting

Marmots

What an auto correct!. Now my phone is offering Mormons. Grin

Only if you eat their brains. BBRAAINNZZZZ.

Actually OP,reading about the plague is really interesting. Endemic in various countries, how it's treated. Weird facts like it looks like rats were maligned and actually gerbils or even hamsters may have (shows what a cute face and good press can do). Horses seem protective. Grooms didn't get it much. Lots of cool facts. www.discovermagazine.com/planet-earth/why-people-in-ancient-times-didnt-get-the-plague

Brefugee · 06/07/2020 21:14

well, you could have picked several other countries - including the USA - so China was an interesting one, OP.

as for this
By the way, the film The Black Death is brilliant and has Sean Bean's best death scene.

2nd best. The best was the herd of cows, surely?

90% survival rate is excellent odds. More than most things.
CrazyToast · 06/07/2020 21:31

I did not know that Inner Mongolia is in China. If IM is in China that means that Outer Mongolia is just...Mongolia?

JammyHands · 06/07/2020 21:37

The last time I heard about cases of bubonic plague, they were in California, I think. It's easier to avoid these days, because we know it's spread by the fleas on rats.

Littlemeadow123 · 06/07/2020 22:19

Bubonic plague is spread by fleas. It is not transmitted from human to human. In order to catch it, you would need to be bitten by a flea. So nothing that is going to become a pandemic in the uk. In small villages in poorer countries where fleas are more prevalent, then maybe but not over here.

ClaudiaWankleman · 06/07/2020 22:30

Outer Mongolia was the name for Mongolia when Mongolia was under Chinese control, until the overthrow of the last dynasty.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/07/2020 22:31

But bubonic plague can spread to the lungs and become pneumonic, and therefore spread just like Covid.

Diseases are interesting!

Anotherthink · 06/07/2020 22:44

What's with the photo of the capital city showing some camels in a desert?

torydeathdrug · 06/07/2020 22:46

Let's face it, he's done a few.

^ has he ever survived a film?

Marmite-eating Mormon Marmots?

Seems a very convoluted way of contracting it.

I think we'll be alright, somehow.

ketchupandmayo · 06/07/2020 23:56

Go get some doxycycline antibiotics. Used for acne and Lyme disease. Oh and the plague.
