Ebay seller refusing to send item

63 replies

VelveteenBunni · 05/07/2020 18:02

Because ebay is holding the funds till 25th July.

Aibu to think that is not my problem?

I've replied to her message stating she needs to send me what I've paid for or cancel the sale.

I'm baffled.

I actually stopped selling on ebay because of this policy - used to sell a fair bit, didn't for a very long time, decided to start selling again as I had a lot of rare ps1 and ps2 games that were selling for a fair bit of money. I sold one, buyer paid and it was only then I realised the funds were going to be held until the buyer confirmed receipt or something, can't remember now as it was so long ago. I decided I didn't want to be held to ransom by ebay so I immediately refunded the buyer and apologised profusely and have never been near the site again and don't intend to. I think it's a totally shitty policy that has the potential to leave sellers out of pocket because, as another poster says, ebay always side with the buyer, to be frank I think ebay treats their sellers like absolute garbage. No way was I letting an item go without actually having the money in my account first. I would ask the seller to refund you if they don't intend to post. They can't just hang onto the money and not post the item. Even waiting until the 25th seems a bit reasonable as that is weeks away.

Funguy · 05/07/2020 19:32

Even if the seller got a negative feedback they would have it removed, ebay would do this. If funds have not cleared, you cannot mail an item out.

BobbieDraper · 05/07/2020 19:39

@Funguy

The funds have cleared. Ebay have the funds. The OP has fully paid through an instant process. Ebay are the ones holding the money until the 25th or until the OP receives the item and leaves positive feedback.

Ebay do this for new sellers or people who havent sold for a long time just to ensure they are genuine sellers and not scamming people.

If the seller posts the item tomorrow and the OP receives it on Tuesday and leaves positive feedback, then Ebay will release the funds to the seller.

This isnt about uncleared funds. Its Ebay holding the money to make sure the seller is real. She needs to send the item.

OP, the seller might be a bit dim. You should send her a message explaining the issue and tell her to post it. If she doesnt, then contact Ebay.

spongedog · 05/07/2020 20:04

I am long standing ebayer (over 1000 feedback). Never heard of this. So what happens if buyer doesnt provide feedback - I am quite lucky when selling many of mine do, but not all. I used to provide feedback the minute i sent - I have slightly changed my policy and will only post when I know item received and all OK.

BobbieDraper · 05/07/2020 20:10

@spongedog

I assume you've been ebaying for a while. As far as I know, this is a new-ish measure they sometimes take.

If the buyer doesnt leave feedback, then the seller can show their proof of delivery or just wait the 21 days for the funds to be released.
Ebay will assume that if the buyer hasn't opened an item not received case by that time, then the item has been delivered. If the buyer does open a case then it would be handled the normal way; the seller needs their proof of delivery.

JaneR0chester · 05/07/2020 20:24

I'm in the seller position - have sold something and the buyer has paid by echeque. It's my first sale, although I've purchased before through this eBay account.

Paypal have sent me explicit emails advising me not to send the item until the echeque has cleared - I've message the buyer through ebay alerting them to the fact that it's an echeque process and that I'll be posting the item when the echeque has cleared.

I've bought and but not sold for a long time, I wasn't aware that ebay/paypal have introduced this new payment option for sellers.

spongedog · 05/07/2020 20:36

@BobbieDraper thank you for clarification. I always get proof of posting but would be very wary of sending before funds received. That would be quite surprising for a new (non-business) seller.

BananaChocolateLump · 05/07/2020 20:37

It's not an echeque.

Seller has come back to me and told me that PayPal has told her to wait..

It's not an echeque
It is showing as a normal transaction my end

BobbieDraper · 05/07/2020 20:44

@JaneR0chester

You're not in the same position. Your buyer chose to pay by echeque. So the funds haven't cleared from their account into yours (through ebay). So you dont send until it clears, because they could cancel it or empty their account so it bounces once they get the item.

The OP did not pay by echeque. She paid with an instant payment. Ebay are choosing the keep the funds for 21 days because the seller is either new, hasn't sold for a long time, or has provided fake sales in the past. Ebay will release the funds after 21 days if no cases have been opened by the buyer or they will release the funds earlier if the seller sends it and has proof of delivery.

It's not the same situation as you.

BobbieDraper · 05/07/2020 20:45

@BananaChocolateLump

Are you the OP? Ask her for a screenshot of the message from Ebay.

Then contact Ebay yourself and see what they say.

VelveteenBunni · 05/07/2020 20:58

Apparently my name change doesn't appear on the app. Apologies.

She needs to send it.
I remember when I was new selling, they withheld my finds, but I still sent the items!

Russellbrandshair · 05/07/2020 21:00

If funds have not cleared, you cannot mail an item out

The funds HAVE cleared- they are on hold with eBay. I’m not sure why people are struggling to understand this. The buyer has paid in full. eBay holds the money to ensure the seller is legit. Once the item has been received or the seller can provide tracking they can access the funds. eBay typically do this with very new sellers.

doublehalo · 05/07/2020 21:24

If she hasn't received your money then she hasn't been paid! In which case she shouldn't be posting it out to you!

Maybe you've used paypal credit or whatever it's called which takes time i think.

YABU.

BobbieDraper · 05/07/2020 22:26

@doublehalo

You're wrong. Read the responses which explain ebays process.

BananaChocolateLump · 05/07/2020 23:15

@doublehalo read the fucking thread. I have NOT paid with any credit facility. I have paid in the normal manner and the funds have left my BANK ACCOUNT

It is not my fault that ebay has decided to withhold the funds. I want the item I have paid for.

doublehalo · 05/07/2020 23:20

Fucking hell-no need to fucking shout!

You want your item that you've paid for. You seller would like to receive payment for an item she has sold to you. Simples isn't it. If you don't want to wait for the funds to clear then cancel the sale or just fucking wait. You sound like a right nightmare. No way I'd be sending you anything if I was the seller.

BobbieDraper · 05/07/2020 23:40

@doublehalo

The seller actually needs to send the item. That's the rules.

The money is being held because the seller is either brand new or has had a few "item not delivered" cases against. Ebay keep the money as a precaution against the seller being a scammer. If she sends the item, she will get her money on confirmation of delivery.

The funds have cleared. The OP has paid. There is no way for the OP to reclaim that money because Ebay have it and will be sending it to the seller when they are sure the seller is not scamming; the seller would need to agree to cancel the sale. The OP hasn't done anything. The seller has used Ebay, which means they agreed to the terms and conditions of selling in the site. That includes posting items when funds are held by Ebay as a precaution.

doublehalo · 06/07/2020 00:24

@BobbieDraper

What makes you think the seller is new or has some items not delivered cases?

From what I can see the seller has 100% feedback rating of over 200 and has been on ebay for 6 years.

As for there being no way for the buyer to get the money back- what a load of rubbish! You have no clue about ebay if that's what you think.

The auction finished barely 48hrs ago. A £11.50 bundle with £4.10 postage?? Y'all need to get a fucking grip.

BobbieDraper · 06/07/2020 00:32

@doublehalo

Here are all the reasons ebay put a hold on your funds.

This has nothing to do with the buyer. They have paid their money. The seller still needs to send the item and the hold will be lifted much faster. These are part of the terms and conditions you accept when you sell on ebay.

The buyers funds have cleared. It is Ebay who have stepped in and stopped the funds reaching the seller, for any of the following reasons, and the seller must still send the item. They will receive the funds. There is no danger of not being paid.

When you buy something in Ebay, and pay for it, you can only get the money back by opening a case, appealing through paypal and asking the buyer to agree to cancel the sale. OP wont get any of those things until the estimated delivery date has passed.

It looks like you're the one who doesnt understand, and you seem to still think the payment hasn't cleared. It has. Ebay have it. They will pass it on once they are sure the seller isnt scamming etc. She is required to post the item in a timely manner.

Payment holds occur because:

You have been selling on eBay for less than 90 daysYou have an eBay feedback score fewer than 100 and have not yet established a record of good performanceYou have received fewer than 20 Detatiled Seller Ratings on eBay in the last 12 months or your eBay seller performance is below standardYou have a high rate of customer disputes or a low eBay feedback percentageYou have been a PayPal member for less than 6 months and have limited selling activityYou have a sudden change in selling activities(e.g. suddenly selling expensive items, selling large numbers of items, etc.)You happen to be selling in a high risk category such as tickets, travel, gift vouchers, computers, electronics, mobile phones, etc.

doublehalo · 06/07/2020 00:45

@BobbyDraper I'll say it again - you haven't a clue why the payment is being held.

It's a simple matter to cancel the sale if the item is still unposted. If you knew as much as you think you know you'd know that.

Lemon out.

BobbieDraper · 06/07/2020 00:50

@doublehalo

You cannot just hit "cancel" when you buy something on ebay. You need the seller to agree to cancel. So the OP cannot just cancel it and get her money back.

I have given you a nice handy list of the reason Ebay will hold funds. They arent preventing the OP from paying; that's already happened. They are holding them from the seller for one of the reasons above.

When you sell on ebay, the possibility of a delay to receiving your money is part of the terms and conditions you agree to. You still need to send the item in the timeframe advertised.

Can you explain what it is you sont understand? I'm sure we can help you with it.

VelveteenBunni · 06/07/2020 07:18

Doublehalo can you just leave my thread please if you're just here to be a goady fucker.

I don't care if its only an £11.50 bundle. The fact is I want want I paid for, as per eBay policies.

I've got an awful feeling that the seller was hoping for more than the auction went for (again, not my fault) and this is their way of trying to weasel out of the sale.

I might be wrong, but it's awfully sus seeing as the seller has actually been on ebay a while. Why indeed are they holding onto these funds in particular?

OP posts:
Piffle11 · 06/07/2020 07:31

Your seller needs to contact eBay and have them explain this to her. This happens, as others have said, to new sellers and those who haven’t sold for a long time. I bought something from a new eBay furniture company a couple of years ago: My sale went through very easily, but when I went back to buy more, their feedback rating had plummeted, because of this problem. People were leaving negative feedback because the company couldn’t afford to send out the furniture, as eBay had kept the funds. They were basically a victim of their own success, because they were selling things at very reasonable prices, they became very popular very quickly and eBay flagged it up.

R2519 · 06/07/2020 08:00

Unfortunately idiot know it all's like @doublehalo really know nothing and in reality, probably can't tell their left foot from their right!

Contact eBay OP. Seller is mistaken. Its a standard process. I've know about it for several years at least now.
