To think that posting a disclaimer on your thread is pointless and up your own arse? ?

I've seen it on a magnitude of threads recently and it is really beginning to piss me off.

Firstly none of the threads containing disclaimers have been interesting enough to make the press (even the most low brow press!!)

Secondly the disclaimer is absolutely pointless and means nothing as threads that have been used in the past are not linked but screenshots / paraphrased, so the disclaimer can be removed.

AIBU - people who post with disclaimers think they are way more interesting than they actually are?

Agree screams the opposite really and they want it to be noticed!

DrPatient · 05/07/2020 16:56

I have literally no idea what you're talking about? What disclaimers? What do they say?

QuestionableMouse · 05/07/2020 16:56

Eh its not hurting anyone.

A few years ago the Daily Mail used a pic I'd posted without permission. I complained and they sent me a cheque for £60. So you never know... 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Normally something like

DAILY MAIL YOU DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO USE THIS

The more creative types work in some swearing.

AnneLovesGilbert · 05/07/2020 16:58

You’re right. While the gutter press can turn a lot of things into a scintillating story I think some people have an elevated opinion of their lives and problems to worry they’ll make the front pages because their husband isn’t any good at home schooling or whatever.

Saucery · 05/07/2020 16:59

They’d just crop out the disclaimer if they wanted to use it anyway.

I did like the username ‘LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt’ though Grin

People post something along the lines of:

disclaimer The Daily Mail are scum and have no right to use my words so that their thread cannot be used in print.

It can as the disclaimer isnt legally binding and MN is a public forum.

DAILY MAIL ARE CUNTS

I agree.

ssd · 05/07/2020 17:02

As if the daily mail really give a rats arse about someone calling them names

They'll just lift the bits they want and leave the rest

HowzAboutThisThen · 05/07/2020 17:04

I agree, it is so stupid. If you are putting something on the internet, and have signed up to a site like MN, you have given permission for anyone to use it anyway.

Crunchymum · 05/07/2020 17:05

I also suspect that some tales are told in a way to encourage the gutter press to pick them up?

ssd · 05/07/2020 17:09

Now that I know the daily mail pay 60 quid for a picture I'll need to learn how to upload them here

Sparklesocks · 05/07/2020 17:10

I don’t think it even works does it? Online forums such as MN are public, I don’t think media outlets need explicit permission from users to print any posts once they’re out on the web for anyone to access, especially as they’re not under real names?

QuestionableMouse · 05/07/2020 17:11

Paperclip icon under the text box if you're using the mobile browser version.

No idea about the app though 😂😂😂

Minniee · 05/07/2020 17:14

It's stupid really because if you've written the daily mail are cunts etc all they'll do it remove that bit and print the rest of the want it.

JoyFreeCake · 05/07/2020 17:14

No wonder I was confused; that's not what disclaimer means :-/

This. Also, they almost always only mention the Mail. Makes me feel like saying, it's ok OP, I'm from the Mirror...
BumbleBeee69 · 05/07/2020 17:20

the disclaimers make me cringe too

LockdownLump · 05/07/2020 17:20

Agree OP. I cringe when I see it.

'The daily mail are cunts so fuck off'

Then usually something like:

My neighbour has just dropped some rubbish outside my front gate. Should I confront them?

Babesinthewud · 05/07/2020 17:21

I was shocked to discover a whine back that a couple of local papers had used a threat I started with my quotes and turned it in to an article 😳

I had no idea that would happen but I suppose this is easy pickings for their editors

Babesinthewud · 05/07/2020 17:22

While back 😬 although probably after a few wines!!

Babesinthewud · 05/07/2020 17:22

thread not threat 😳

mollokoy · 05/07/2020 17:26

Yes, it's pointless. Even for screenshots. It's so trivially easy to edit a webpage to say whatever you like and take a screenshot. And it always has been. You can do it right in any browser.

whereistherum · 05/07/2020 17:31

I think the best thing to do is just change your user name to something like dailymailarecunts, probably won't stop them, but I find it funnier

Crunchymum · 05/07/2020 17:35

That is true about disclaimer, it isn't technically the correct word.

It is MN standard though (to call it a disclaimer)

What is a better word?

Caveat? Warning?
