Is the word ‘master’ about to become socially unacceptable?

sst1234 · 05/07/2020 11:02

Just heard a debate on tv about whether the word ‘master’ conjures up images of slavery and if it is appropriate as in ‘masterchef’ and ‘master bedroom’. What? Really? I am speechless. Anyone taking offence to this is not just barking mad but is politically correct to the detriment of real issues in the world that need attention.

Irrespective of where the terms/words originate, a lot of them still have racist or sexist connotations....

Look how a lot of you reacted to simple Karen FFS, but you're feigning "ignorance" over this.

TooTrueToBeGood · 05/07/2020 11:55

In building/ engineering etc there are the male/female parts - these should obviously be changed out of respect for non-binary and trans people.

Interesting concept. I actually ordered a USB extension cable recently and due to my own lack of attention to detail ordered male to male instead of female to female. I'm off to suggest it might want to self-ID in the hope I might avoid having to return it.

I am in my 40s but starting to feel like I don’t recognise the world around me. Can’t we just work towards having an equal society - without discrimination, without huge disparities in income, etc - but without focusing in all this meaningless stuff?

Let’s look at the US - they have been obsessed with this kind of stuff for years - and what good has it done? It’s all just rhetoric.

DopamineHits · 05/07/2020 11:56

Boys aren't really known as "Master" anymore, that's quite antiquated.

People can deal with big issues and have time for smaller issues too.

I'm not going to spend any time fretting over "Master" being on the SJW list. I think it excludes women. Yes, you get female Masterchefs and other things but they are explicitly called "female Masterchefs", as if they are anomalies. Who cares it if gets replaced?

I still remember the pearl clutching when "policeman" started to get phased out... People get over it and adjust.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/07/2020 11:56

And yes, as others have said, and I'm sick if saying and having my posts ignored:

Modern slavery exists, probably right where you are... If you want to effect real change become aware of that and do something about it.

Stop posturing, spouting ill informed twaddle .. act!

Jux · 05/07/2020 11:57

@Sparklesocks

I personally believe this what was Malcolm X was talking about, getting bogged down in small details rather than addressing the wider issues
Couldn't agree more.

Exactly - make sure you ask what pronouns are correct.
TypingoftheDead · 05/07/2020 11:57

I agree with Malcom X - if people want real change, take actual action to make it happen. Language will evolve to reflect changes, or at least lose the negative connotation over time.

If it's meaningless why are you bothered? It should be beneath your notice. And historically the small things tend to help with the bigger things.

jackdawdawn · 05/07/2020 11:58

And presumably 'mistress' has to be purged too.

There are hard times ahead for the BDSM industry.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/07/2020 12:00

Oh! So you have been told your assertion was wrong and you come back with "it's all in the feels" - connotations my arse. You got suckered by disinformation.

Do better!

PlanDeRaccordement · 05/07/2020 12:01

@memememoi

There is context in this.

Master bedroom as in the Slave Master's Bedroom... if you don't know how disgusting and loaded this is then I suggest you do some reading because judging from a lot of the replies, a lot of you do not have the range.

A lot of terms we use are deep rooted in racism. Just because they're "normal" long standing terms, and the trauma of being on the receiving end doesn't apply to you, it doesn't make it "political correctness gone mad".

Some of the responses in this thread are just 🥴🥴

But the actual history behind “master bedroom” in NOT “slave masters bedroom” it is descended from medieval times when the Lord and Lady of the manor had separate bedrooms. The Lord’s bedroom was referred to as the master bedroom by his servants (not slaves). His wife, the lady, her bedroom would be referred to by her title...so Lady’s bedroom, or Duchess bedroom etc.

The roots of master bedroom have no link to racism or slavery at all.

Fairenuff · 05/07/2020 12:03

Master means 'in charge'.

Anyone in charge can be a master regardless of their sex or race.

Connotation literally means what comes to mind when a word is said. The fact that an ignorant and uniformed mind thinks master bedroom has anything to do with slavery and racism should not dictate whether the word is unacceptable or not. Surely if person has a feeling based in ignorance, they should be open to being educated as to the facts?
memememoi · 05/07/2020 12:05

Please go back and read my original post dear Karen's. I never said it originated from slavery.... but you all know what you're doing here.

PhilCornwall1 · 05/07/2020 12:07

It's bloody ridiculous if you ask me.

I was in a meeting talking about Master Data Management solutions and the sole input from one of the decision making Directors was "do you think we could call it something different, it just seems so wrong in the current climate".

The collective sigh could be heard over the call very easily.

DullDullWeather · 05/07/2020 12:07

Unelected, mouthy Marxists are leading this
WHY ? No idea as none are nowhere near power

I agree with most PPs who say its virtue signaling , at its worse I would add.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 05/07/2020 12:07

What fun, now some obfuscation.

Only you have mentioned 'Karen' another sexist term.

Nobody else here has referred to it!

iklboo · 05/07/2020 12:09

You said 'A lot of terms we use are deep rooted in racism.' You were told Master Bedroom isn't one of them. Because it isn't.

Petty & childish name calling now? Using a dismissive term because you're wrong. Not exactly reasoned debate now, is it? And there's no apostrophe in a plural.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 05/07/2020 12:11

@memememoi

Please go back and read my original post dear Karen's. I never said it originated from slavery.... but you all know what you're doing here.
@memememoi

So, when you said “Master bedroom as in the Slave Master's Bedroom...” what, exactly, did you mean?

Fairenuff · 05/07/2020 12:12

@memememoi

Please go back and read my original post dear Karen's. I never said it originated from slavery.... but you all know what you're doing here.
It's Karens (without the apostrophe) if you are referring to more than one Karen.

You ought to know how to spell your insults if you are going to use them effectively.

HTH

mrsBtheparker · 05/07/2020 12:15

I'm so glad that I am too old to give a damn about ineffectual words being the target of the bullies.

letsgomaths · 05/07/2020 12:16

In the Famous Five, remember how Miss Georgina preferred to be known as "Master George"? Even though those books were full of sexist stereotypes, George was an advocate that girls should not be limited in what they can do just because they are girls.

Nobody has mentioned "masters" and "mistresses" once being the usual words for academic staff in schools, and woe betide any child of the 1950s who called them "teachers".

Now we'll have to change the name of the quiz show Mastermind, and they'll have to stop using a black chair. Oh wait, pink stinks...

SerenDippitty · 05/07/2020 12:18

No more Masters degrees?
