Would you go out to dinner, pub shopping if the government paid you to do so?

We won't be eating out, but would have happily supported a place by getting a takeaway

(Shielding pauses in 1 August, but on current guidance, restaurants are still a no-no even then. A further update is promised before the end of the month, so that might change)

How would this work then?
I don't get it. People with little money would use it for bills and stuff, those with money will eat out anyway.
I'd love to spend more and have Weekly chippy tea from the lovely little place we go to.

Lots of restaurants have always had 2 for 1 on main courses, 50% off on them etc. on Monday-Wednesday anyway 'cos they're such quiet days and this offer is barely more than that

I could actually see the 50% off as ending up being worse value than the usual weekday deals in a lot of places because it's limited to a tenner. Unless, of course, restaurants still do their own deals as well as the 50%.

Thousands and thousands of eople spend all that time and hassle getting a groupon to save 5 quid on food in a place they normally don't go to or a tenner from takeaway they wouldn't normally order from when uber has a code.
They will use this.

"This Restaurant thing (£10off) will only for those who can actually afford to eat out at all. It’s no good to the poor who can just about afford a tin of beans"

It's not aimed at them, the scheme is not one to provide food to people. It's to get footfall back into restaurants, in the hope it will help, stop some from going under
