to be mystified by people wearing masks on their chins

Or over their mouths but not their noses.

Why, just why?

I read somewhere (this is a bit crude) that it was about as much use as wearing a condom over your testicles.

I was in a shop today, a popular national chain that sells toiletries, & many branches have a pharmacy. The pharmacist & at least 4 of the assistants & staff were wearing their masks either on their chins, over their mouth but not the nose, or slung underneath the chin like some kind of miniature virus riddled hammock. Complete with frequent rearranging of the masks each time they needed to speak to a customer. But God Forbid a customer should touch any item on the shelves... we're supposed to wait for them to bring it and breathe germs on it

BarbaraofSeville · 04/07/2020 03:17

Add to that the people who wear them hanging off one ear.

Or walk around with their phone in their gloved hand, because you can guarantee that they're not cleaning their phone before they next pick it up with their bare hands.

Were they wearing glasses by any chance? My glass steam up wearing a mask so I tend to move it down when I'm not near anyone, and pull it back up when I am.

A few weeks ago, someone posted a link to a video on here to a scientist talking about the science behind masks and how droplets are transmitted and they specifically said that it is talking that propels droplets and so it is only really the mouth that it is important to cover so under the nose might not be as useless as you think.

fallfallfall · 04/07/2020 08:30

Same as notshinny, on the chin when far from people (parking lot) properly on in shop, back down en route to the car.

DestinationFkd · 04/07/2020 08:33

To hide their double chins.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 04/07/2020 08:35

We have to wear them most of the time at work. When we are in a situation they don't need to be worn, rather then take them off completely we tend to push them down over our chins instead. In the grounds of our work you'd likely see a lot of people like that going between buildings etc.

It might be worth trying other masks, as thos should not happen when there is a good fit. Does your current one have a wire to keep it snug over the contours of your nose?

That pharmacy sounds dreadful!!

I do see people wearing them low slung when outdoors, but I always thought they'd be adjusting when about to enter premises (bit like I put mine on, then use hand sanitiser, when I go indoors somewhere)

BananaChocolateLump · 04/07/2020 08:38

Face masks don't bloody do anything any way.

hula008 · 04/07/2020 08:39

I wear my mask on public transport and in shops. on warm days it can get quite stuffy under the mask so walking between bus stops, train platforms and shops I pull it down to cool down.

JassyRadlett · 04/07/2020 08:41

Face masks don't bloody do anything any way.

Can you share the evidence for this?

NotShiny · 04/07/2020 08:41

Yes AuntyStella, it happens with all masks, even the medical ones with the contoured plastic piece over the nose. Apart from possibly sticking them to my face, nothing will stop them steaming up my glasses.

BeyondMyWits · 04/07/2020 08:42

If you take it off you need to put a fresh one on.

If you hang it from an ear or shove it under your chin, you can carry on using it.

Don't know if that is valid or not, but seems to be the impression I get when at work (behind my perspex screen, so no mask.)

tigger1001 · 04/07/2020 08:44

Was in a shop last week where :-

A man took his mask off to use his vape then put it back on

A man took off his mask as his pal couldn't hear what he was saying. Had a big conversation then put his mask back on to shop.

People not wearing them over their noses or mouths - and yes while talking

Lady pharmacy worker only covering her mouth with a mask - while serving customers

Couples shopping together but only one with a mask on. Surely if they are worried about being vulnerable and getting ill, both should wear one?

Most people who insist on not socially distancing in shops wear masks in my experience - it's like they are invincible.

NotShiny · 04/07/2020 08:44

And they do make me hot too. I find when I wear one, when I take it off I'm all red. Noone by me tends to wear one. I find when I have worn one in a shop, everyone stares at me because I'm the only one.

healththrowawayx · 04/07/2020 08:45

This man in the supermarket yesterday had the audacity to pull his mask down to his chin to sneeze! That’s one of the situations where your mask is supposed to stay on surely? What’s the point of wearing one otherwise?

NotShiny · 04/07/2020 08:45

"Couples shopping together but only one with a mask on. Surely if they are worried about being vulnerable and getting ill, both should wear one?"
My partner refuses to wear one. I think hes exempt anyway.

GinnieHempstock · 04/07/2020 08:45

I work in the NHS and pretty much everyone uses them incorrectly as it is so difficult to do it properly.
When you put a mask on, you should then gel or wash your hands. You then shouldn’t touch it at all. When you take it off, again you should wash or gel your hands. If you are going to rewear the same mask, it should be stored in something like a Tupperware box.

Masks do reduce droplet spread but I am sceptical how useful all these masks used incorrectly are. I think they may do more harm than good in certain situations.

But it’s ok, if one of my team tests positive for CV, then the rest of us don’t need to SI for 14 days as we have been wearing masks.

olympicsrock · 04/07/2020 08:47

I’m a doctor and regularly wear masks. The ones with elastic round the ears are designed for a man’s head and are too big for most women therefore they slip down. Face masks need to be tied tightly Over the top the head or have mouldable wire.
For glasses wearers - wash your glasses in soapy water , rinse and air dry. This leave a antifog film. Then tape you mask for 10 cm across bridge of nose. As a surgeon I cannot adjust my mask after putting it on for 4 hours on wverage so have worked out what works!

PhoneLock · 04/07/2020 08:47

If the weather improves, there should be some interesting tan lines about.

Yes... I get the impression the mask drive at our work is far more about reducing absence than maximising safety. But I'm feeling a bit cynical about my work right now so maybe I'm just being negative and that's not their main concern at all.

TroysMammy · 04/07/2020 09:10

I don't think people know how the human body works. You breathe in through your nose and out of your mouth.

user1495884620 · 04/07/2020 09:11

This is the video about how masks protect. About 3.10 is where he says covering the nose doesn't matter.

Farahilda · 04/07/2020 09:14

but I am sceptical how useful all these masks used incorrectly are

Used correctly (or at lease well enough) there is definite reduction in transmission

Even if used very wrongly, they are still a visual psychological reminder that there is a need for additional precautions.

Shock at removing to sneeze! It's as if it were impossible for hayfever sufferers to have Covid!
