Pram Selling Dramas

I have a beautiful Venicci travel system in immaculate condition and used for only a few months. Due to an upcoming house move and a pack of storage space I decided to sell it and get a stroller. I had a very interested buyer and held it for two weeks for her. It was initially priced at £500 no offers. I went out and bought a new pushchair and car seat, expecting to recoup the money spent when the travel system was sold. The buyer was unsure whether she would come Thursday or Friday. She then messaged on the Thursday asking if she could come "now". I didn't reply within 30 minutes as we were napping and was then blocked on everything.
Fast forward to today, I reduced the price to £480 with a mentality that I won't accept any less than £450 at a push.
A lady came today to view it and was offering £350 to take it tonight, saying that's all she has. I reluctantly said she could have it for £400 for a quick sale. She says she'll let me know but I expect it's out of her range.
AIBU to not want to lower the price or am I unlikely to sell at the price it is worth? I do need it gone and would like to have not gone out and spent money on a new pushchair that I could have used the cash for with our move, but I don't want to basically give it away.
What would you do?

I said I'd let the girl know. She had waited the whole time that I had held it for the other buyer. I'm not moving for another 2 weeks so if a reasonable offer doesn't come up I'll reconsider.
I guess everyone has different etiquette when buying second hand. £130 off is a lot to me, I personally wouldn't bother trying to haggle for something I can't afford but obviously know people do.
I have a big age gap between DC so it's interesting to see how things change when it comes to baby stuff.

@LadyFlumpalot

I only got £100 for my beautiful, pristine iCandy Apple system when I sold it many years ago and that included two branded fleece inserts and the foot muff things which alone were £50. The market for second hand prams is saturated sadly.
That's gutting! Tbh I'll be gutted to see it go anyway, never mind for cheap 😂

I will be selling a Cosatto travel system shortly, including an Isofix base and attachments, never used nappy bag and and all other accessories.

I paid over £600, I expect to get £70. This will cover half of the cost of a new stroller.

For everyone looking to buy a second hand pram, there will be three people selling one, and every one of these people will believe theirs is in almost pristine condition, barely used, etc...

Igotthemheavyboobs · 03/07/2020 12:49

I've just searched my fb marketplace for Venicci travel system and there are no adverts over £300.

Moat are around the £150-200 mark in excellent condition

MamaLion1319 · 03/07/2020 12:50

Judging by how horrified some PP seem to be that I would dare ask £400 for it, I think I got my answer.
Thanks ladies, will reconsider, but in no rush 😊

@borisjohnsonsstylist Thank you. By far one of the most helpful comments.

The secondhand pram market is incredibly over-saturated, as everyone and their mate wants to sell on their prams when they're finished with them.

To a buyer, secondhand means secondhand. It's completely irrelevant to a buyer that you think it's beautiful, and that you only used it for a couple of months. That's true of almost every other secondhand pram on the market. Sorry, but yours is no more special than anyone elses.

Like anything on the secondhand market, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay. And if you really need/want it gone, I'd take the £350 offer.

The travel system for my twins was £1000 new. We used it for about 9 months, and sold it for I think £400, and I was pleased to get that much.

heartsonacake · 03/07/2020 12:53

I think you’d be very unlikely to actually sell it for that much. Second hand pram don’t sell for a lot and have awful depreciation.

£400 is what I want for 4 months use on school runs. I'd put it up for £500 obviously expecting some haggling. What was your original asking price if you don't mind me asking?

BlusteryLake · 03/07/2020 12:57

If you can, hold out a bit longer. I did that with my iCandy and after several offers well below the asking price, I found a buyer at the price I was looking for. The issue is if you need it gone, then you may have to accept less.

MamaLion1319 · 03/07/2020 13:00

@BlusteryLake
Thanks for your advice I will do.
I know a lot of women, myself included, will only want the pram they have their heart set on so hopefully another one other than this girl comes through for us!

VinoOlive · 03/07/2020 13:00

We sold a 1k iCandy earlier this year for £260 and were pleased.

AllsortsofAwkward · 03/07/2020 13:03

I paid 300 for a brand new mamas and papas pram used for both dc no way would I pay 400 for someone else's second hand pram it's not embarrassing if people could afford new they would get new. Its same with wedding dresses they dotn hold their orignal retail value and people arent prepared to pay top notch for second hand.

MamaLion1319 · 03/07/2020 13:06

@AllsortsofAwkward
I'm not saying it's embarrassing second hand I'm saying I would be embarrassed to offer £150 under the original asking price. £50 or so I would but that's just me personally. Sorry if I offended you.

I'd agree with what others have said. Regardless of the condition it's still second hand and unlikely to be so rare that people will snap it up for your original asking price. I do remember about eight years ago certain travel systems like the uppababy vista were just really coming onto the market and people got good money for them second hand but that's not the case anymore.

Glendaruel · 03/07/2020 13:12

I'm just starting pram shopping. If I buy second hand, I would find it hard to justify more than £350 as there are good ones going at that price. Current safety advice means I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand car seat.

Don't know if it helps but I'm looking for something with really good description. Some just say great condition which means I have to go away find details out like what weight does it go up to, is pram too approved for occasional overnights. A s well as official bits, it would be great to know what you like about it, have you found it lightweight, easy to fold, fits in your small boot etc. How old is it? £350 is a lot of money and I want confidence in my decision. Also good photos of every perpective. If there are any marks close ups. Is it still on market, if so I've the rrp of it new and from where, so I can see the bargain. You may have done this already, but a lot of sellers don't.

Sailingblue · 03/07/2020 13:12

I think you’re pitching too high. I’d be happy if I got £100 for my bugaboo when I come to sell it. On the local pages you tend to see the bugaboo/Icandy etc up for £80- £200 depending on age and what’s included. At £400 many people would rather have a new one than a secondhand one.

MamaLion1319 · 03/07/2020 13:14

Thank you @SparkyBlue
DS is 7 now and I do remember the second hand pram market not being the way it is today.
I was really skint when I had DS so we used to do swaps round our estate, so I hope people don't think I'm being tight, just out of touch 🤦🏽‍♀️😂

MamaLion1319 · 03/07/2020 13:17

Thank you @Glendaruel.
It is pretty high spec and I know people think I'm being silly when I say immaculate condition but it's been inspected by others and there's not a single scuff. The girl who came was even checking the tyres etc obviously hoping for a reason to offer less and couldn't find one. She has just messaged to say she will pay the £400 so for £100 less than the asking price I'm happy.

I bought a baby jogger stroller last year which had cost £430 new with accessories. The original owner had literally used it once (and judging by the condition when it arrived I believed her - half of it was still in unopened packaging).

I paid £260 including postage, which partly reflected the fact that it would no longer be under warranty as they aren't transferable, but mostly reflects the fact that prams are like new cars and wedding dresses in terms of depreciation.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 03/07/2020 13:25

I just don't get why people spend so much money on these things when in the blink of an eye your baby's grown out of it. I suppose you can use it for future siblings but still , a grand seems extortionate to me.

Darkestseasonofall · 03/07/2020 13:26

The thing is if someone has £500 to buy a second hand pram, they very likely have £800 to buy a new one, they aren't looking at the cheaper end of the market.
Most people I know, me included, we're very lucky to have their Mam but their first pram, and most grandmothers to be don't want second hand, especially if it's a precious first grandchild.
Sell if for £300 if you can, a bird in the hand and all that.

lanthanum · 03/07/2020 13:27

Our local NCT sale (massive) advised that selling prams and travel systems was a bit "luck of the draw" - it depended mostly on whether anyone looking wanted what you were selling, and not as much on the price. Some years something wouldn't go that the previous/next year would have been snapped up.

If you need a quick sale, and you've only got one person interested, then you probably go with it. If you're going to hold out for more, you'll have to be prepared to store it.

Perhaps you can say to this lady that you're hoping for more, but if you have no further offers in the next n weeks, you'll get back to her. Obviously you might need to judge this by how pregnant she is - if the baby's due next week, she'll have got something else!

Same, I spent £250 on a full cosatto travel system. Will sell once son is finished with it, probably for about £30.
