Theresa May sacked him when he was Defence Secretary.

I doubt he had set foot in a school for 20 years before the idea of him getting this job was muted. He has no plan, no clue and has lost the schools and parents.

He should go back to selling fireplaces.

Agreed and add Matt Hancock to that list.

RubyViolet · 02/07/2020 22:44

Yes, this piece is depressing echt

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jul/02/gavs-brilliant-back-to-school-plan-pretend-the-pandemics-as-good-as-over

No leadership, he’s done bugger all to help this situation. Lame duck.

I know they have advisors. But I’ve never understood how they can flip from job to job in the government with no training or anything.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 02/07/2020 22:48

Every time this government makes a decision on something, I am left wondering why. Who actually made the decision, really. Because it clearly isn't anyone who knows what they're doing / is bothered about the consequences for the country. It does seem that someone behind the scenes has a hell of a lot of interest in the big political decisions, & influence over those who make them.

I'm not suggesting something like the Illuminati, BTW. More like big business, exerting pressure. And "Old Boys Clubs", especially the kind that give each other a leg-up but tend to keep incriminating photos from the days of their youthful indiscretions.

RubyViolet · 02/07/2020 22:49

I used to believe that Ministers were exceptional in business or service. That was obviously completely naive.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with selling fireplaces but to say that qualifies him to influence an entire generations future by leading the Education policy of this country makes my brain fry.

OP posts:
CalmYoBadSelf · 02/07/2020 22:53

I don't know anything about him so am not defending his performance but it seems that every Education Secretary is pulled apart, ridiculed and demonised by teachers. I cannot think of even one in recent years that has had anything but negativity.

RubyViolet · 02/07/2020 22:54

And l am not having it that the Unions are responsible for this. It’s upto Gavin Williamson. He is working with a massive majority in parliament, 80 odd seats. The Government can more or less do what they want with this majority.
He has just dropped the ball.

OP posts:
tiredanddangerous · 02/07/2020 22:55

To be fair, any Tory would be wring for the job. They’re not known for wanting to throw money at the stuff that matters are they?

Frazzled2207 · 02/07/2020 22:59

He’s useless.
On the bright side he is highly unlikely to try and make any massive changes to education like Gove did. Gove is a complete slime, but at least he has the ability to come across as competent.

RubyViolet · 02/07/2020 22:59

That’s probably true Tired, but this is a pandemic. The Government need to get this right. This is exactly where the money needs to go. I just can’t believe he didn’t see this months ago.
Someone with experience would have seen this. I think Kier Starmer tried to talk to Boris and reach out to help, he wrote a letter but Boris but he ignored him.
This should have been a cross party working group.

The thing I find most bizarre about the shit he comes out with is that his wife is a teacher

You just know he goes home at night and she tells him why it won’t work

RubyViolet · 02/07/2020 23:31

Lyralalala... Mind blown !!! Is that a fact !
His Mrs must be livid ! I bet the atmosphere in the staff room and at the school gate is something else.
I am starting to think that possibly he is a stooge, that he is a front for the back room boys and Dominic Cummings. Let’s face it Cummings is running the show.

OP posts:
BlackCrow · 02/07/2020 23:38

Emma Kennedy described him on Twitter today as "a minor character in a Dickens novel who creeps about being mildly irritating". Spot on!

RubyViolet · 02/07/2020 23:43

Black crow that is spot on ! 😂😂

As is Private Pike !!! Now where did last read that.

It always seemed strange to me that MPs can be Secretary of State for a department without experience. The NHS and Justice for example. If you have never worked in that field, how can you understand the role?
It’s like putting a bin man in charge of NASA. ( no disrespect meant).

Just double checked as was doubting myself and she’s described as a “former primary school teacher”

So, she doesn’t have to face the school staff room, but she’ll still be able to tell him his ideas are bonkers when they are

It’s very bizarre that Williamson got back into a big job so quickly after his sacking. I wonder if they’d have given him education if they’d realised how central it was going to be so soon after

lyralalala · 02/07/2020 23:51

And he also has a window into the world of education because his brother is a secondary school teacher, and his wife Joanne is a teaching assistant who used to be a primary school teacher.

Maybe she will actually...

That quote is from this article...

Chienloup · 02/07/2020 23:53

Massively ineffective. He speaks with zero conviction, and instills zero confidence. It did make me laugh at the briefing today, when he said he wants to send his daughters back to school as they basically don't listen to him! He's obviously a complete drip at home too.

Mosseywossey · 02/07/2020 23:58

I am a teacher, desperate to get back in the classroom but I am scared of his announcements. They are unrealistic. I’m hoping by September things will be better but it looks like it won’t.

ssd · 03/07/2020 00:00

Who the hell voted this shower in???

RubyViolet · 03/07/2020 00:07

It makes really quite sad that B Johnson thought so little of the Education Department that he thought it was ok to put this non-entity In charge.
This should be the job that attracts the brightest with the best ideas. Education is everything.

AlexaShutUp · 03/07/2020 00:24

He is clearly incompetent and way out of his depth. Rather like his boss.

TossaCointoYerWitcher · 03/07/2020 00:43

He's the guy who kept a pet tarantula on his desk, isn't he?
