To think the human race should respectfully die out?

I’m not being goady as I’ve genuinely thought about this over the past few years as the following issues have come to the fore:

Climate change
Industrial meat industry
Pandemics

I’ve tried being vegan but always revert to eating meat for health. I’ve come to the conclusion that it was a much needed part of our evolution. The problem is of course the intensive whole scale nature of it, and the suffering it causes. Even the plant industry causes a lot of damage to the environment and ecosystems. The sheer numbers of humans needing feeding is the problem.

Again, with climate change. It’s a question of over-population. The more of us there are the more we deplete our earth’s resources we deplete. Limiting consumption is simply not working so we need something else.

And although we might crack Coronavirus, there’ll be another virus along soon to challenge us. And it’ll spread quickly because there are so many of us.

I’m not advocating mass suicide of course!

Just that we encourage our offspring to not have children until we have either died out or at the very least reduced our numbers to such a point that we are just one species amongst many, living on this planet and not causing the disproportionate amount of harm to the environment and other animals.

There’s nothing to argue that the human race should continue forever.

It's lazy thinking.

FannyCann · 03/07/2020 10:01

Ooh. Can we have another "Dolphins are nasty fuckers" thread? The last one was so funny, did it make it to the classics?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 03/07/2020 10:12

The dolphins left the Earth before it was destroyed to make way for a hyperspace by-pass. They knew.

ShebaShimmyShake · 03/07/2020 10:13

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

If the people of the world went vegan over time the world would recover.

It is possible to have a vegan diet and be healthy.

No it would not. It would lead to mass slaughtering/species extinction event of all cows, pigs, sheep, and replace them with soy bean, lentil, and palm fields. Lots of humans, no animals.
anxietrist · 03/07/2020 22:57

I think the next generation will have very different views on having children than us anyway. They're pretty switched on to the shit show that is life on earth 🌍

Right, which is why humans need to drastically reduce in size so that they are just one species among many and not dominating the show.

Humans cannot exist in the numbers they do now without severely damaging the balance of the planet and causing never-ending suffering to its creatures.

So as far as mass slaughter/extinction is concerned, the animals are being slaughtered anyway. It's disingenuous to pretend we care about their continued survival if the survival we give them is torture.

Humans do too much harm.

I agree but you'll get flamed.

SerenDippitty · 04/07/2020 00:07

@MarshaBradyo

We need to stop having kids.

How would you bring it about?

If you don’t want any anyway it’s no hardship, but most do, I’m wondering what you’d use to make it happen

Maybe as a society stop conditioning people into believing they won't be happy and fulfilled unless they have children.
Flymetothetoon · 04/07/2020 00:15

I have so much to say but I don't want to be a victim of the Ban Hammet.

Flymetothetoon · 04/07/2020 00:16

Hammer

LinemanForTheCounty · 04/07/2020 00:24

I wouldn't worry about being banned: I've read plenty of similar sounding proto eugenicist misanthropy on here previously. They don't seem to mind. You're unlikely to change anyone's opinion but equally they're unlikely to ban you.

GeorgianaD · 04/07/2020 10:09

I think some people need to get off their devices. Looking at some of the responses, it’s clear some posters have literally been on Mumsnet for the entire day. Hmm Life is for living, not for sitting on a phone, presumably ignoring your family. That’s one way for the human race to die out.

MarshaBradyo · 04/07/2020 13:12

I posted a bit on Thursday still got loads done, not sure why people are hopeless like that.

I was hoping for this promised ‘debate’ but that last pissy post has pretty much convinced me to go with the op (for some people anyway).

proto eugenicist misanthropy - maybe that’s the term I was looking for.

Thelnebriati · 04/07/2020 13:22

YABU. No rational person would with for their own species to become extinct. Its not even necessary.
Future generations need to focus on terraforming, off planet or here.
We don't have to die out, but should at least have the good grace to clear up our own mess.

But to do that you'd have to a remodel capitalism, abandon consumerism, allow a universal income, contraception and abortion on demand. And most of you can't even agree on those as basic human rights.

stairgates · 04/07/2020 15:51

I dont think we should take it on the kids, I think we should go through the vile and useless already living on the planet and have a good cull! A good clearout would also make any current and future children on top of their gameGrin

The problem with Thanos is its indiscriminate. Imagine waking up tomorrow and one of your kids, your Dad and the single parent across the road have just disappeared.
malificent7 · 05/07/2020 04:36

Sounding like eugenics on this thread...scary.

HMSSophie · 06/07/2020 08:53

The amount of blame, ignorance, and hostility on several threads I've read since first posting on this one - omg, I'm feeling more sickened by Homo sapiens than ever. Let the species die out. Let the earth go back to being in balance and a thing of beauty.

SunflowerOwl · 06/07/2020 13:16

We have become pretty shitty, I agree with that. But I'd like to think we could learn and do better rather than all dying en masse.

I agree with the posters who have said its over consumption, not overpopulation that is causing the problem. We in the west are consuming constantly and far more than what we need. Energy (what does everyone think the MN servers are running on?), fast food, fast fashion, cars, big houses etc. And it's only going to get worse as developing nations catch up and want the same standard of living as what we have.

Not enough people have the inclination to do better for the planet though. And who can blame them, when they are set such a shit example by governments and corporations? It feels futile making any small lifestyle changes like washing out a yoghurt pot when big companies are literally dumping gallons of pollution straight into rivers and bulldozing huge swathes of the Amazon. Guilt tripping people at an individual level for being alive is just pointless - the changes need to be global and systematic if we are to truly move towards sustainable living.

So no, I don't think we need to die out. But we need to change, massively and fast. We wont though. Just look at when someone suggests on a thread that, for example, older people should downsize once their children have left home so that there are more large homes available for families. This is uproar - why should people have to leave the homes they've worked hard for, everyone cries. Build more homes! Aka destroy the environment even more just so I don't have to make any sacrifices. Hardly anybody is willing to sacrifice their own quality of life for the sake of other people or the planet.

Should people with no children have to leave their homes that they have worked hard for so that people who have chosen to have children can have them?

Guineapigbridge · 06/07/2020 13:48

The planet is over populated, agreed. The focus on births is wrong. It's keeping people alive for too long that's the real problem. Once you're fifty, you're done, kindly volunteer to die.

Guineapigbridge · 06/07/2020 13:48

That is in jest by the way!
