On skincare?

Just that really. I've used lockdown to clear out years worth of gifts and half used products that i never stuck with. Now that i'm over the hill of 40 and noticing some dark circles, lines, etc i want to get a grip of my face.

So how much do you spend on skincare and any "can't live without" products?

(I have looked online a lot, but it's a bloody minefield!)

Moved to the ordinary a month ago and wish I had done it sooner! Skin has never felt better. So affordable too. Think I spent £35 on all the bits I use daily and I can really see a difference. Im very recently 33.

purpledagger · 02/07/2020 10:00

About £20 a month. I use The Ordinary products and each bottle lasts for a couple of months, so great value.

gerbo · 02/07/2020 10:18

Probably around £8 a month! I use soap and water in the shower in the morning, then Aveeno cream (cheap and cheerful from chemist!).

Then Simple foaming face wash and Aveeno cream at night. Aveeno is scent and colour free and reasonably natural.

I think my skin looks just fine. No deep lines, no spots at all, clean and clear and natural. If I drink enough water and I'm not tired it has some glow too.

I'm afraid I think a lot of the beauty industry exists to part us from our cash, I'm a sceptic. Eat well, drink water, sleep well, the fewer chemicals the better.

I only wear make up if going out for evening. My skin is clear with no spots or dry patches. I wash with hot water to open pores and splash with cold water to close pores. I use Dove in shower. That keeps skin smooth and soft. Highlighter around eyes is my biggest purchase along with a little face powder and blush.

Sod all. I pick up a kilo of coconut oil in Asda for £2.50. Job done Smile

I use No 7. With the deals they have all the time it doesn’t work out expensive and, IMO, really works. I’m over 50 so use the Lift &Luminate part of the range as well as their line corrector.

Beauty Pie cleanser - £6 (lasts two months)
Beauty Pie serum - £13 (lasts three months)

I think that's it. I do have some heavy face creams I will occasionally put on at night + some face masks I use weekly, but I actually won those in a competition and wouldn't have gone out of my way to buy them.

A fair bit

Eye makeup remover
Cleanser (a balm and a lotion)
Toner
Acid toner
Vitamin C
Prescription retinol
Moisturiser

emmathedilemma · 02/07/2020 10:38

Very little!
I used to the use the clinique 3 step skincare but haven't bought any more since the last lot ran out. I've been using a simple facewash and clearisil cleanser and Aveeno moisturiser.

I'm 33 and I use collagen gel (quite expensive but lasts ages) and one of them Korean mittens (about a tenner off Amazon?) to exfoliate. Sanex hyper-allergenic shower gel (About £2 and no nasty perfumes etc and still smells lush). SPF cream from Aldi (£3 ish) on hot days (I know you should use that every day blah blah). My skin is so soft and usually clear ...but around my time of the monkey (now) I look like the spawn of Mrs Twit on a bad day! greasy hair and covered in spots.

LizzieMacQueen · 02/07/2020 10:53

@DramaAlpaca

Honestly very little, I never have. Just a basic moisturiser with SPF15 and that's it. I was my face in water only and rarely wear makeup. I have good skin which is still quite unlined and I'm mid-50s. I prefer not to put much on it.

That sounds just like me. My product is Clarins hydraquench. I have tried others but nothing is as good as the Clarins. About £35 and lasts 2/3 months.

WittyUser · 02/07/2020 10:56

The most important thing in skincare I think is sunscreen! Pay a little more for a facial one that feels light and comfortable on the skin/easy to layer make up over (if that's your thing)

Much of all other ageing products is essentially trying to reverse the damage done by the sun, you'll spend a lot less in the long run if you prevent ageing from the sun in the first place

LondonJax · 02/07/2020 11:25

I'm almost 58 and have never spent a fortune on skin care.

I developed rosacea about 10 years ago and only got in under control 18 months ago by using Soolantra. So I don't experiment much. Face masks (the cosmetic kind, not the PPE!) bring out spots and I dread the rosacea returning.

I use Nivea micellar water to cleanse as I can use it on the eyes too (too lazy to swap face and eyes cleansers about). I use a clean face flannel after cleansing - just dip it in warm water and use it as a gentle exfoliator every night. I use Child Farm's moisturiser on my face night and morning and that's it. Sun block on the face in the summer as the sun brings out the redness of rosacea for me.

My mum was a very little make up woman and only used soap and water on her face. She had beautiful skin and barely any wrinkles when she died at 90 years old - I don't know if it was the lack of cosmetics or lucky genes!

keepitdownplease · 02/07/2020 11:25

Another vote for The Ordinary! Just email them and they'll help you pick the correct products for your skin. I spent £30 and it lasted almost 6 months.

Thomasina79 · 02/07/2020 11:35

I use what ever is on offer at the Sainsbury and get my son to buy it for me at Christmas. He usually gets two which lasts for ages, I think they were £6.99. His other half once got me some clarins when she briefly worked there. It was lovely but far too expensive for me to buy! The Loriel one I use now is fine, though the Aldi cream was good too and was really cheap!
