On skincare?

Just that really. I've used lockdown to clear out years worth of gifts and half used products that i never stuck with. Now that i'm over the hill of 40 and noticing some dark circles, lines, etc i want to get a grip of my face.

So how much do you spend on skincare and any "can't live without" products?

(I have looked online a lot, but it's a bloody minefield!)

You're all making me feel better. I've been using miscellar water and a basic moisturiser forever but just thought i should be doing more.

That's me too. I don't spend more than £50 on skincare a year. I am over 50 and my skin is pretty good, I think.

MiniMum97 · 02/07/2020 00:23

Loads now. Not sure exactly but at least £100pcm. That includes suncream.

ShitUsername · 02/07/2020 00:25

About a tenner a month - mainly Simple stuff as it seems to agree with my skin and doesn’t make me break out. I use the daily detox face wash and moisturiser every day and the face scrub once or twice a week.

MiddlesexGirl · 02/07/2020 00:26

Very little.
I have foot cream which I use once or twice a month, hand cream less often and a general moisturiser which again maybe once or twice a month for legs and elbows.
Nothing ever for my face. It doesn't get dry so anything would just upset its natural balance.

MiniMum97 · 02/07/2020 00:28

Sorry didn't answer your question really.

I've recently started double cleansing at night, added in vitamin c serum (amazing stuff!) and switched some of my normal products to unscented and my skin has already improved massively. It's never looked as good just from this change. I'm 47 and had problem skin all my life.

Just about to introduce a HA serum and will then think about a retinol.

I've been following the great skincare threads by @botemp Some really helpful advice if you want to get into some serous skincare!

AgeLikeWine · 02/07/2020 00:43

Almost nothing, certainly

Hadjab · 02/07/2020 00:44

@1stmonkey if you’re wanting to start using products from The Ordinary, the primary one would be hyaluronic acid (which isn’t an acid). This will help bind moisture to your skin to keep it hydrated. Next would be Vitamin C, an antioxidant which helps to combat free radicals, lighten hyperpigmentation and even out skin tone. Last is Retinol, Viramin A, which helps to reduce signs of ageing and improve your skin texture. And don’t forget to use SPF ( minimum factor 30), everyday, even indoors.

notangelinajolie · 02/07/2020 00:47

Nothing.

user1473878824 · 02/07/2020 00:51

I am awful for spending on skincare. I don’t think you HAVE to have expensive things in the slightest but I really love Drunk Elephant and notice a massive difference when I use it so that’s my big treat to myself. I spend about £30 on a cleanser that cleared up my hormonal acne and while I could and do not buy expensive products when I can’t afford them, that I won’t give up. But I’m a smoker and a drinker alongside being a frowner, so I need all the help I can get.

Heidi1976 · 02/07/2020 08:51

I spend quite a lot to be fair. I use the ordinary but then I use other products alongside which are generally more expensive, ESPA, Elemis, Decleor, some Korean brands, daily SPF. I buy quite expensive shower oil as well. I think there is nothing better to invest in than a good skin care regime once one hits a certain age!

The ordinary is good though on a budget. I love their BHA/AHA skin peel. I spent some time working out a regime for myself and got pretty much everything I needed for £50 and will last a while. I buy nice expensive other products to compliment said regime.

ivykaty44 · 02/07/2020 08:55

Cold water as possible and sun cream
Eating as healthy a diet and exercise

ivykaty44 · 02/07/2020 08:57

@user1473878824 I know twins in their 60s, one smokes & the other never has. The age difference is very stark due to the skin conditions from the smoke

readingismycardio · 02/07/2020 08:58

Quite a lot, as I only buy paula's choice with some random cerave and TO, however the products last MONTHS and they never finish at the same time which is great, because I only have to replace one.

I use cerave cleanser - cheap as chips, it's amazing and does the job
BHA 2% paula's choice
1% retinol paula's choice
Azelaic 10% paula's choice but I'm gonna go back to the TO, I see no difference
Vit c 25% PC
Moisturiser PC
2x face masks PC

ZeroSumTrap · 02/07/2020 08:59

Nothing. I have bad skin, tbf! I put sun block on my face, some very sunny days.
I have hand cream I sometimes put on face, too.

happymummy12345 · 02/07/2020 08:59

Nothing. Only thing I use is a ton of sun cream when it's hot as I burn very easily.

CorianderLord · 02/07/2020 09:01

I just spent about £150 on a massive haul of masks, cleansers and oils. I finally ran out of my stockpile (used to get stuff cheap from work but don't anymore).

Other than that I usually spend around £20 a month on moisturiser (have eczema so get through A LOT) and lip balm.

CorianderLord · 02/07/2020 09:02

Would massively recommend The Plenaire Skin Frosting Mask for dry skinned people. It's incredible and I've already stocked up on two more. Amazing stuff.

CorianderLord · 02/07/2020 09:03

I also use Cult Beauty - look into retinol, vitamin C products and if you have dark circles a caffeine eye cream.

ForeverHomeSearcher · 02/07/2020 09:09

The new Caroline Hirons book on skincare looks great and might be a good place to start to avoid buying pointless products.

I use beauty pie. It works out a lot cheaper if you're used to beauty counter price level products. In the 8 months I've been a member I've spent about probably £250, that includes a reasonable amount of make up though. I've got a wide range of things now though, serums, face wash, masks, scrubs, moisturizer, SPF.

EveryYouEveryMe · 02/07/2020 09:10

A lush cleanser with almond And clay in it, one that’s more oil based for winter/when I’m out in harsh weather and Dream cream moisturiser for when I need it and after going out in the sun.

Sun cream too but ipref the big hat, sunglasses to sun cream that inevitably makes my eyes itch and sting.

SanFrancisco49er · 02/07/2020 09:20

Very little, I use Simple Micellar wipes and cold water and then wash my face at night with Nivea face wash. I dont moisturize as I find it upsets the natural balance of my skin. Use hand cream occasionally.
I've always believed the general skin care industry is a bit of a cash spinning myth to be honest. Diet and exercise and not smoking or drinking are far more important!

Quayy · 02/07/2020 09:21

ANYONE SUFFERING FROM SKIN ISSUES!

I have done for years and years, but recently found Kush Angels on Bare Skin cleanser and it’s been amazing! I barely have any spots now and my skin is lovely! I know this won’t work for everyone, but it’s been amazing for me. (Roughly £5)

After cleansing I tone with rose water which is about 3 quid from the pharmacy, then whilst my face is still damp pop on some hyaralonic acid from the ordinary (about £6). Then I use some vitamin c moisturiser (with sun cream) from Sainsbury’s which is about £5. And then sun cream on top on sunny days.

I also do an aha mask from ordinary about once a week which was around £5 and I have glycolic acid from the ordinary which is also around a fiver which I use about 4 nights a week. My skin has never been better and for the first time ever I am SO happy with it after years of being miserable!

I have invested in some retinol and will be starting to use that on the wrinkles. So I guess all in all I have spent around £50 but these products last for months and have really made me happy, so totally worth it.

I do think it’s important to Look after your skin. Of course lots of water and a good diet helps too!

Quayy · 02/07/2020 09:22

*Lush. Also I know it sounds like a lot but it takes me 10 minutes in the morning, 5 minutes at night to wash off and stick some acid on.

Keepingthingsinteresting · 02/07/2020 09:31

The ordinary is good- they have a few “kits” as it can look overwhelming. Hyaluronic acid is good for everyone as holds moisture. I use the buffet serum, hyaluronic acid 2% and a moisturiser ( not same brand as I need something richer) in the am, then a l’occitane serum, hyaluronic acid and a night cream at night.
I’m 40 but skin is very good compared to friends

DieFly · 02/07/2020 09:32

A year ago I’d have said very little but I’ve used Lockdown to really try and improve me 50’s, lined skin and it seems to have worked.
I use Dermatica for Tretinoin, Medik8 vitamin C and Aldi Caviar night cream. Cleanser and eye balm are Nuxe.
