To ask how to remove the smell of wee from bathroom flooring.

Replacing the flooring is not an option or I would 100% do it, I have even offered to pay for the replacement. HA house, downstairs loo is a wet room but not in use or ever been in use as a wet room as far as I know. No shower fitted just a plate where one can be attacked if ever needed all plumbing and electrics are present in the wall. House is 3 years old I've lived here nearly 18 months and inherented the wee smell from the last tenant. It smells like the men's toilet at the pub and is absolutely vile. As soon as the door is open the smell hits you in the face it's so strong you can smell it in the whole downstairs when the door is opened. The window has been removed and that wall tiled over so no fresh air, I run the extractor fan 24/7 which does help slightly but I want/need to remove the smell, so plesse hit me with your best suggestions I will try anything at this point.

@WhatsWhat456 its called Altro floor and is used in level access showers. There are very limited types of cleaner that can be used and the protective layer although hard wearimg can be stripped back by normal floor cleaners.
If you google altro floors look at what they recommend.
Somewhere in the room (maybe under the bath) there may be a floor drain. The idea is that the room can then take a bath or level access shower as your house has been built to lifetime home standards so is largely adaptable for a disabled person.
The drain has a plastic cover which can be removed with a screw driver. Your previous occupant may have had a level access showe room and just peed down the drain.

Casschops · 01/07/2020 17:57

Dont put hydrogen peroxide or any non recommended solution on it will make things worse.

Casschops · 01/07/2020 17:59

Sorry i keep thinking of things but dont try and replace the floor it costs thousands to fit and it is actually very thick. You have to dig down into the floor to install it and there will be very large drainage tray underneath. If you can't resolve itbask your lanlord to sort it out.

WhatsWhat456 · 01/07/2020 18:34

The window was completely removed and bricked up, you could never tell from the outside that a window was ever present, it might well have been built like that. The other 12 houses on my road all have windows there but they are privately owned. I have ordered a pet cleaner and that black urine odour remover that was posted up thread. The repair department rang back and they won't come out because they can only attend for emergency repairs due to covid 19, so that's that. I have put a door stops in to keep all the doors open and then opened both French doors and all the downstairs window to allow fresh air to flow in there. Hopefully the full day of fresh air will see some improvement tomorrow morning.

I don't suppose it could be valspar paint rather than the floor could it? The smell would be more cat pee than human tho x there are many threads which would explain I don't have the heart to just now SadHmm

The drain is next to the toilet but is covered with a metal plate. I have had that checked by a private plumber it is properly sealed. There is no bath and just a plate where an electric shower could be fitted in needs be. It is the downstairs toilet the main bathroom is fine thankfully.

It could be the celling paint I guess but I would imagine the builder used the same tub of white paint throughout the house, the rest of the rooms are ok. I have undercoat and paint in the shed at this point I will try anything.

I am half contemplating unscrewing the drain cover and blasting the floor, tiles, sink and toilet with the jet wash but not sure if that would be a step to far. The jet wash has a detergent bottle so bubbly water can be applied first followed by plain water, I mentioned this to dh and he thinks I'm crazy.

I wouldn't do anything else drastic- you need the HA to see it, and don't want them to think you've damaged it with over enthusiastic cleaning.

How long have you been there?

WhatsWhat456 · 01/07/2020 19:19

We've lived here 18 months house is a new build will be 3 years old August.

I wonder if any of your neighbours are experiencing the same problem op?
Might be worth asking. That way you might be able to see if it was a problem with the construction rather than anything else.

Planterspots · 01/07/2020 19:49

We had that, I thought it was the floor for ages and drove myself crazy trying to clean it. It actually turned out to be the back of the toilet though as we got this replaced and the smell went with it!

Fairybatman · 01/07/2020 19:55

It doesn’t sound like something that can be cleaned away.

I’d be thinking towards your paint or a problem with your drains.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 01/07/2020 20:05

Just in case it isn't the floor, put 2 caps of Zoflora in the toilet cistern, leave an hour then flush. Pour a cap down all the drains and plugs inc overflows.

Feellikedancingyeah · 01/07/2020 20:07

I would replace the flooring with something as close as possible in appearance to what it is now. The current flooring needs removing ! the HA won't know if you keep quiet

oralengineer · 01/07/2020 21:58

We had a problem with urine smell in a downstairs loo. Turned out to be the plastic light bulb holder that was producing the smell when it overheated. Someone had put a high watt bulb in when it was only rated for up to 60w. Some plastics contain urea.

Skinnydog · 01/07/2020 22:32

We had this in our previous house combination of previous tenant and my stepson purposely missing, initially we thought it was the lino that was loose so I ripped the whole lot up and scrubbed it etc. This improved it but didn’t get rid of it completely, what I found with this kind of flooring is it’s supposed to be sealed on all edges as this is what makes a waterproof seal. After a number of years this normally wears away around skirting and under toilet etc as the floor under and walls are normally wood based the urine soaks in and unless you can get the same amount of enzymatic cleaner you’ll never truly remove it. You either a) remove affected areas and relay and reseal or get it to a level where it’s not noticeable unless you stick your nose to the floor! Personally I’d scrub with a good puppy cleaner every time you clean to remove and prevent more build up and also use to put dry bio washing powder down the gaps soak up any moisture and then hoover up. Sadly only thing that truly resolved it was moving house and stepson no longer using it as a urinal. Also just a thought worth checking when your due a new bathroom it maybe sooner than you think 😉

Skinnydog · 01/07/2020 22:35

Just seen update there’s no way it should be that bad! Ours was literally years of people missing and not cleaning it, that’s grim and not what I’d expect from new build at all. I thought that was the attraction of new build all shiny and new

jakeyboy1 · 01/07/2020 22:38

We had a horrible smell in our bathroom for ages it was more poo than wee in ours - like you tried everything. Eventually turned out to be a pipe flowing the wrong way and sitting on top of a heating pipe which was heating the stagnant water smell. Only thing that worked whilst we had the issue was fresh air, I know you don't have windows in there but can you air the whole house with the door open?

Fanthorpe · 02/07/2020 07:13

I was wondering about that too oralengineer, OP have you had a good sniff of the light fittings?

WhatsWhat456 · 02/07/2020 07:59

I will investigate the light fitting now. It is the same plastic stump as upstairs bathroom and was in the kitchen but I have replaced that one already, a new bathroom light would be an easy fix.

TheBluePineapple · 02/07/2020 09:06

Have you asked PigletJohn? He might know. I feel scared to summon him as it’s not my issue but....

WhatsWhat456 · 02/07/2020 15:25

Update. The cat wee remover arrived earlier from Amazon, I sprayed the whole area and left following the directions. Then scrubbed and scrubbed for an hour the whole floor, toilet, basin pedestal and walls and rinsed with water and dried using old towels. The smell is so much better only very very faint now so thank you for all your advice. I will repeat what I did today next week and hopefully the smell goes away completely.

Amazing! I've been thinking about this so update pls!

Mypathtriedtokillme · 03/07/2020 02:07

Has the floor drain/unused shower trap dried up and is letting sewer gas back into the room?

Try pouring a few cups of water down each and see if it changes the stink.
