Replacing the flooring is not an option or I would 100% do it, I have even offered to pay for the replacement. HA house, downstairs loo is a wet room but not in use or ever been in use as a wet room as far as I know. No shower fitted just a plate where one can be attacked if ever needed all plumbing and electrics are present in the wall. House is 3 years old I've lived here nearly 18 months and inherented the wee smell from the last tenant. It smells like the men's toilet at the pub and is absolutely vile. As soon as the door is open the smell hits you in the face it's so strong you can smell it in the whole downstairs when the door is opened. The window has been removed and that wall tiled over so no fresh air, I run the extractor fan 24/7 which does help slightly but I want/need to remove the smell, so plesse hit me with your best suggestions I will try anything at this point.

If I could replace the floor I 100% would but I have had it in writing I am not allowed to remove it and if I do it would be classed as a breech and they would seek possession, I have 3 dc and don't want to lose my home. The flooring in integrated into the tiled walls and the large floor drain that is sealed so not as easy as just removing it like it would be in a normal bathroom, the odd thing is I'm allowed to replace the upstairs bathroom flooring but that is laid like a regular bathroom. I'm so embarrassed about the smell it is really getting me down. I have white paint and primer I'm going to repaint the celling now. I have removed the extractor cover and it is currently soaking in watered down bleach.

Pets at home sell enzyme cleaners too

TrickyKid · 01/07/2020 11:03

I'd just replace the floor regardless of what the landlord says.

HammerToFall · 01/07/2020 11:05

I have heard a lot of people say that shaving foam gets rid of the urine smell in bathrooms. I've not tried it but know a lot of people who swear by it.

BankofNook · 01/07/2020 11:07

The flooring is probably Altro saftey flooring, its expensive and usually professionally fitted, can also be difficult to remove depending on how it was installed which is why the HA won't want you removing it.

It's not that easy to pull up anyway. Usually you have the base floor (floorboards or concrete) then they top it with a water tray, then that's overboarded and screeded with latex, then the Altro on top of that. I helped my parents pulls some up at their new house and it took a shovel and a lot of swearing to help peel it up once we got under the edging.

Another one to try if you haven’t already- jeyes fluid, used for cleaning kennels etc, pretty strong stuff. Would echo what others have said, try smelling the walls, ceiling etc, maybe the smell of not coming from the obvious place and some paints etc do smell pretty bad.

howsicklyarsekissy · 01/07/2020 11:11

Defo shaving foam

WhatsWhat456 · 01/07/2020 11:12

@BankofNook yes your right it can't be easily removed and is integrated into the wall, it slopes slightly towards the drain cover to stop water leakage if a shower was ever fitted in their. I have come to terms with the fact it can't be replaced so need to remove this smell.

Have you tried the pet Zoflora?

birthdaybelle · 01/07/2020 11:12

Why won't they let you change the floor?! They don't usually mind. I just moved in and changed it straight away.

Maureenthecat · 01/07/2020 11:14

Have you tried Milton?

I’d also be tempted to find yourself

birthdaybelle · 01/07/2020 11:14

Sorry just saw they won't let you. I find that so weird...

Maureenthecat · 01/07/2020 11:14

... some PPE and set to it with some neat bleach (or strong solution)

WhatsWhat456 · 01/07/2020 11:16

I am currently scrubbing the wall tiles with flash bathroom cleaner after I have finished this will repeat with shaving foam to all 4 walls and the floor. I have shaving foamed the floor previously a few times and it masks the smell for a day or so when the perfume wears off it's back again.

Have you asked for a housing officer to visit. Its not really acceptable that you are expected to live in a home which has the bodily fluids of a previous tenant remaining in your flooring. It sounds as though it may have gone right through to whatever has glued it down which is why you cant get rid of it

WhatsWhat456 · 01/07/2020 11:20

@birthdaybelle I am allowed to change the upstairs flooring which is the same type of vinyl but fitting regularly as it is a normal bathroom and I have already replaced the vinyl flooring in the kitchen with ceramic floor tiles. It's because it is a wet room so not as easy as just replacing the flooring unfortunately, I can post a photo if it would help explain what I mean.

I have Milton under the sink will try that after the flash but before the shaving foam. I have a dust mask with filter from laminate laying project and rubber gloves so will wear those and use neat Milton. I will remove this smell I have to.

Bicarb soda and white vinegar my saviour for everything

Murinae · 01/07/2020 11:25

We have a problem with our downstairs toilet and I have now found it’s the toilet itself. If I put colourful toilet cleaner all around and the flush the bit at the front where I presume most of the wee goes in doesn’t actually get washed off by the flush! I’m now getting the toilet changed for a different model.

WhatsWhat456 · 01/07/2020 11:28

I replaced both toilet seats when we first moved in and I removed them weekly to thoroughly clean the toilet, then wash the seat in a bucket with washing up liquid and Dettol. I sound like a loon but the smell is really getting me down.

A great big container of 3% hydrogen peroxide, put in cistern, scrub all toilet, pedestal, pipes and floor around toilet.

birthdaybelle · 01/07/2020 11:32

No I'm sorry, I didn't read the thread properly and can see you've explained now. My god how annoying!

GrumpyHoonMain · 01/07/2020 11:35

How much would a bathroom deep clean cost in your area? It’s about £150 where I am. If you were thinking of replacing the flooring then try getting a reputed company in instead. At least that way if the smell still hasn’t gone you can often have them come back as a guarantee.
