Do birds wee? ( sort of light hearted - so I don't seem really dim)

I have been wondering. I mean we occasionally get bird poo on the car or on the Windows ( usually straight after they have been cleaned) but do they wee?
Have I been walking around for years and just been incredibly lucky to have escaped avian urine!?
Maybe they only see when it rains and then we might never realise....

It all comes out together and the egg comes out of the same hole, at least that’s what happens in chickens.

GerundTheBehemoth · 30/06/2020 07:30

@houseinthemiddleofthestreet

I only found out a few years ago that owls don't poo. I was amazed.
They do poo... (but like many other birds they also regurgitate pellets, formed out of the most indigestible bits of their diet).

@Papergirl1968

Great question! I’m 51 and it only occurred to me the other day to wonder why sparrows only mate with other sparrows, blackbirds with other blackbirds etc. I asked my 87-year-old DM and she didn’t know either. Grin Can anyone enlighten us?
Blackbirds and sparrows are completely different species. It's the same as asking why do dogs only mate with other dogs and cats only mate with other cats. They are different species and their genes are too different to produce viable offspring.

For the same reason humans tend to mate with other humans rather than with chimps, dolphins or camels - most animals only can and only want to mate with others of their own species.
Crockodoodle · 30/06/2020 07:38

Chickens seem to pop constantly however when they go broody they hold it all in then once a day they go for a quick walk and to get food/water and do a pop so big you'd think it was a dog's.

GerundTheBehemoth · 30/06/2020 07:40
@FinlandFlag me too.
Why don't you see baby pigeons?
I love birds.
Except crows and seagulls 😂
Look in a pigeon's nest to see baby pigeons! As with most smaller birds they only leave when they are fully feathered and nearly adult size. There are still clues that they are babies though, eg their eyes are greyish rather than orange.

CherryMaple · 30/06/2020 07:43

@Monty27 We had a baby wood pigeon in our garden yesterday. All grey and fluffy without the white ring/collar on its neck. We have had baby feral pigeons too.

Smartanimal · 30/06/2020 07:43

On a similar note. Do female animals menstruate? Some people say dogs do but we always had dogs when I was a youngster and I never noticed!

caravanshed · 30/06/2020 07:47

A fascinating topic!

Sibsmum · 30/06/2020 11:57

I have seen baby pigeons!!!
This bird wee things is really complicated. I don't feel as dim anymore and I am grateful to you all for that.
The bit about it being corrosive is something I have heard about too.
Does anyone else find that they seem to target clean cars and clean Windows or is that my paranoia talkingGrin

Cats don't have periods. They only release eggs when they are actually being mated with, I think that's right. Cat boys have spikes on their penis that stimulate this. You should never try and part mating cats because it will really hurt them.

Pp were correct, Google is my friend. ☺

Thanks, User and Gerund. I was thinking “but they’re all birds!” Then I realised that humans and cats and dogs and chimps are all mammals but we only mate with our own kind.
Sometimes you need someone else to state the obvious!

Katinski · 30/06/2020 12:22

@BoreOfWhabylon

Baby birds produce their waste all wrapped up in a little package, nice and tidy. The parents pick it up and fly off to dispose of it.
Ahhh, I like that! Wish human babies did the sameGrin
LizzieMacQueen · 30/06/2020 12:26

What I'd like to know is do birds know they are going to die (naturally I mean, not predator) and do they take themselves away to do it? They don't fall randomly from the sky - or maybe they do. Do they suffer heart attacks?

StillWeRise · 30/06/2020 12:26

I remember when I was at university another student (and therefore someone who had a few A levels at least) asked why, if chickens have breasts, there are no nipples on a chicken breastShock

StillWeRise · 30/06/2020 12:27

I don't think many wild animals die of natural causes, or old age

HoppingPavlova · 30/06/2020 12:33

Yes, I have also wondered about birds and death. We are surrounded by a huge number of birds, trees all round, birds absolutely everywhere all the time. But no dead ones ever on the ground having dropped from the tree or sky. I find it very odd. I was musing about this once and someone hypothesised neighbourhood cats carried them off but I think that’s bunk as there are so many birds, not that many cats around and I can’t believe a few cats could consistently vacuum them all up or not be dragging them home and no remains after the cats have had their fill.

HoppingPavlova · 30/06/2020 12:39

Re the dogs and periods, yes they definitely do.
We had a dog that was not spayed when I was young and the dog lived inside. We had light coloured carpet. It was utterly disgusting. I still remember the smell. My parents used to have the carpet professionally cleaned every time she finished on heat but Christ it stank during. Also, she would constantly be licking herself to try and clean it up. Unpleasant. Unfortunately this led to an infection which she nearly died from. Thankfully the result was a hysterectomy which fixed all future unpleasantness.

I had a friend who bred dogs and her females were allowed inside. When in heat she used to put dog nappies on them. Google it, they exist. It was weird but did the job (2 fold- stopped any mess or her kicking at it constantly, and a boy accidentally getting to her apart from the stud she was meant to be put with which didn’t happen every time she was in heat).

Sibsmum · 30/06/2020 12:40

Nipples on chicken breast. 😂😂😂😂
Anyone else still chuckling?
Thank you xx

Female dogs bleed when they're on heat but it's not the same as a period - it is localised bleeding (because the vagina develops a much richer blood supply during oestrus) rather than a shedding of the uterine lining. The blood and discharge contains male-attracting pheromones.

Monty27 · 30/06/2020 17:36

Yes OP I'm chuckling 😳

Sibsmum · 30/06/2020 17:54

Glad someone else thought that was hilariously funny too. Grin

The Ornithine Cycle sounds like a Prog Rock band.

Monty27 · 01/07/2020 01:48

Ornithine Canal would be cool. Not so cool if they're shit though Grin
