Is it madness to attempt a UK holiday this year?

Have put a deposit on a few nights camping later this year. Campsite open and running with some extra precautions. It's a place we've been going every year, no pool or bar or entertainment or anything like that there it's not that kind of place but always beautifully clean and cares for.

Thinking we will just keep ourselves to ourselves. Visit beaches and go on walks, take our own picnics or eat fish and chips. Doubt we will be going in any restaurants or visiting any major attractions.

But then when you see scenes such as Bournemouth beach recently it makes me wonder.

A brief aside: given that political parties do have researchers trawling MN, I hope the total mishandling of Bournemouth on Thursday has been spotted, given those on here who have stated 'Not Bournemouth, after what we saw on the news...'

Every August holiday I have had in the Uk it has pissed it down for more than 50% of the week. I’m inclined to stay at home or at least wait and see what the next 3/4 weeks brings:

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 30/06/2020 00:30

We've been to the Isle of Wight a few times. Torn over whether to book again for the summer. Have found a lovely cottage but is £850 for the week in August, is this comparable for elsewhere? Also a bit concerned if travel will be ok by then. Any ideas?? Not too bothered about attractions, we avoid most of the big name (and ££) places anyway. Happy with walking, cycling etc.

Weve had a haven holiday booked since September last year. So far it's going to be a haven hideaway. we were going to cancel but have decided that after working right through lockdown we are going to go.

Only thing that is bothering me is I cant see train prices so hopefully they'll be able to be booked soon.

@MagnoliatheMagnificent I think £850 in August is reasonable. I have been looking at self catering accommodation with 2+ bedrooms and many are much more than that.

@B9008 Yes, last time I had my main holiday in the UK was in 1977. It rained solidly for 14 days.

I booked the appointment self catering cottage on AirBnb a couple of days ago, for a few weeks' time. I'm confident that it will be OK. We're going to take all our food with us for the week and prepare almost all our own meals (might take a look at the local pub to see how the land lies, but we're preparing to potentially eat all meals in the cottage). So, basically we will be at no greater risk than we are at home.

Monkeynuts18 · 30/06/2020 13:38

Yeah we’ve booked a cottage in a remote location for next week. Won’t be a typical holiday - no pub gardens, visiting tourist attractions etc - but will still be lovely after being locked up at home for more than 3 months!

I think a lot of people don’t realise just how expensive a holiday in England can be.
I have a disabled child who won’t fly so have been stuck with UK holidays for many years, it’s amazing how many people think I holiday in the UK because they think it must be really cheap and I obviously can’t afford to go abroad.

Absolutely! I love a UK holiday but it’s far from the cheap option. Tenerife and the Costa del Sol can be far cheaper. Tbh I think that’s why staycations are such a middle class cliche.

We have a self-catering place booked in Scotland for mid August which I'm feeling quite optimistic about

We're off to the outer Hebrides on Friday, very first day the ferries are running a "normal" service again. We have a house there and missed our 2 weeks at Easter, so can't wait!!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 30/06/2020 14:21

I've just booked a few nights away on the 29thbof July, but I can cancel for free and will do if no attractions will be open for the kids.
Also booked center Parc's for November.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 30/06/2020 14:30

We are going to a self catered place, in a remote location where beaches are quiet or even empty even in peak season. We want to support the local businesses there, so will plan to buy lots of takeaway meals, locally produce ice cream & fudge, and souvenirs.
