Is it madness to attempt a UK holiday this year?

Have put a deposit on a few nights camping later this year. Campsite open and running with some extra precautions. It's a place we've been going every year, no pool or bar or entertainment or anything like that there it's not that kind of place but always beautifully clean and cares for.

Thinking we will just keep ourselves to ourselves. Visit beaches and go on walks, take our own picnics or eat fish and chips. Doubt we will be going in any restaurants or visiting any major attractions.

But then when you see scenes such as Bournemouth beach recently it makes me wonder.

We're thinking of Northumberland. Loads of space and ruined castle.

Laburnam · 28/06/2020 19:10

Booked an air bnb in the cotswolds, my holiday to Montenegro has been cancelled

funkylittleboatrace · 28/06/2020 19:12

We are off camping in a few weeks it's a Haven site nothing is open on the site though which is fine with me.

Bathroom12345 · 28/06/2020 19:13

I looked at some UK breaks and the prices were shocking. That and the weather made me book something in Spain for September on Friday.

Cornwall can bugger off with its we don’t want tourists but we do want your money so let’s rip them off!

Honestly for me it’s the unpredictable weather. I don’t want to sit on the beach in my coat or dodge the rain trying to go out to dinner

Juo · 28/06/2020 19:28

ohThatCat I recommend Northumberland - great scenery, gorgeous beaches, lots of castles and uncrowded. Also Yorkshire- the Wolds, the Dales and the North York Moors.

Oblomov20 · 28/06/2020 19:30

We are off camping in our caravan. Can't wait.

forrandomposts · 28/06/2020 19:33

We're going away for the week next weekend! Can't wait

PinkiOcelot · 28/06/2020 19:36

@Bathroom12345 I’ve just been looking and I found the prices shocking. I’d rather stay home than pay those prices.

Anotherthink · 28/06/2020 19:40

Any campers worried about the shower / toilets situation?

EatDessertFirst · 28/06/2020 19:44

We had a week in a Scottish Air BnB booked for end of July (booked last September). I've moved it to next August due to lockdown and I don'tvwant to put pressure on the local services or feel unwelcome. We won't get another holiday this year but hoping for some decent days out including a wildlife park I've already booked for August.

wejammin · 28/06/2020 19:45

We've cancelled our 10 day camping trip to Cornwall because it's a 7 hour drive with 3 small children which is usually worth the slog for the campsite and the beaches. The campsite facilities will be shut and I'm worried about toilets etc on the beaches. Have instead booked 5 nights neat Whitby in mid July and a week near Alnwick at the end of August, both self catering. Has cost a small fortune but I needed something to look forward to. I couldn't believe some of the prices for rentals!

Sounds pretty much like current lockdown life but in a different location, why would you not go?

Surely if the beach was crazy busy you would choose somewhere else for that day?

maudavery · 28/06/2020 19:47

I am supposed to be going to Scotland but it looks like people living in England may need to self-isolate if they enter Scotland, so it's not worth it for us, we are only going Monday to Friday and I don't want to be sat in the accommodation the whole time.

I'd be very very surprised if this was the case- how on earth would they enforce it?

PhoneLock · 28/06/2020 19:47

We are off to Wales as soon as it opens.

Lindy2 · 28/06/2020 19:55

We've got a cottage booked in Cornwall for mid August. It's a friend's cottage and we've been every summer for the last 4 years.

I'm hoping it won't be too crowded. It actually isn't usually too busy when we've been as long as you avoid the hot spots like Port Issac, St Ives, Kynance Cove etc.

Based on the fact that most places are normally fully booked during school holidays it hopefully won't be that much busier than previous years as there won't be enough places for people to stay for there to be that many more there. Hopefully that's not just wishful thinking.

It's going to be a bit different from previous years as I don't think we'll be eating in pubs or restaurants or visiting the theme park we like to go to, but at least it will be a change of scene. Everything else has been cancelled so far this year it would be nice to still have some kind of holiday.

Mummyme87 · 28/06/2020 19:56

During lockdown We booked 4 nights in Yorkshire for end of July. I’m really looking forward to it. Need a change of scenery

tenlittlecygnets · 28/06/2020 20:02

We've booked a self catering cottage near a beach on the west coast of Scotland... should be very quiet...

mum2jakie · 28/06/2020 20:03

Cornwall in August. Self catering and won't be expecting to go too far but we need something to look forward to after a six month slog!

jamimmi · 28/06/2020 20:13

I think Yorkshire maybe busy this year. I've just booked the last week in july.and into august in a couple of cottages. No spain this year too much risk but I need a change. Live closer to the lakes but normally go to Yorkshire and I know alot of people doing the same. Dont bank on it being quite but hopefully not a crowded as the south

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 28/06/2020 20:14

10 July!!
Staying in a barn/cottage that I usually go to a few times a year, about 60 miles away but rural and a few miles to the coast.
I know quiet bits of the coast, but usually only go a couple of times during the week; if its busy I'll turn back and spend time on the farm/walking from there. I've booked lunch at favourite restaurants on a couple of days.

Going back in September too.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 28/06/2020 20:21

I think a lot of people don’t realise just how expensive a holiday in England can be.
I have a disabled child who won’t fly so have been stuck with UK holidays for many years, it’s amazing how many people think I holiday in the UK because they think it must be really cheap and I obviously can’t afford to go abroad.

Now they are finding out just how expensive it often is.

Bathroom12345 · 28/06/2020 20:51

@Anotherthink

Any campers worried about the shower / toilets situation?
I don’t mind spending some £££ and our holiday to Spain isn’t cheap at all but I really cannot face a UK holiday. I went a lot when I was growing up and sadly only had memories of tacky arcades, rain, sand in sandwiches, a windbreak and sitting on the beach in my coat.

Would love the Italian Lakes and have been many times but booked a few days ago and thought it might not be on the original air bridge list.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 28/06/2020 20:54

BlusteryLake we’re doing a Forest holiday this year too. I thought it was our best chance of some peace on holiday!

Snooks1971 · 28/06/2020 20:59

@labazsisgoingmad take care of yourself and hope you get some time away Flowers

Juo · 28/06/2020 22:32

Absolutely, its one reason I would rather go abroad. I've paid £800+ for 4 nights in a (admittedly luxury) cottage. Add to that the cost of eating out (or takeaway) and it's not a cheap option. Still I was planning on spending a lot on holidays this year after a year of cancer treatment.
