To think that there is no deodorant that can cope with my issues.

I use mitchum stick first followed by the Mitchum spray.
This just about copes with me, but not brilliantly. Mitchum is probably the best that I’ve ever come across.
Every single other deodorant and antiperspirant I have ever tried is utterly useless and will fail within the first hour.
Even those that are supposed to work for a week don’t work for more than a few hours.

I’m rapidly approaching peri menopause and I just know that it is going to become 100times worse than it is now.

What the hell can I do?

I use soap to wash. Put mitchum gel on before bed and use mitchum stick or spray after my morning shower. Works a treat!

NauseousNancy · 27/06/2020 23:15

Snap @MotherofKitties. It’s incredible stuff - please try it, op!

My dh had tried almost everything else mentioned on this thread, with no luck. His next step was Botox when the doctor mentioned this - I can’t remember the price but was less than a fiver. Incredible!

Last year MN suggested Trust, among others.

Interesting to hear people getting the burnt skin thing with Driclor, I haven't tried it but there's something similar available in supermarkets, I can't find it to remind me if it's name, but it burnt me so badly you'd think I'd used acid, I reacted so badly to it. And it's hardly cheap, I felt so angry.

Soap bars. The most effective I've ever found has been Lush's 'bohemian' soap which is full of lemon. I've not been able to either get it or afford it for a long time so I experiment with other natural bars available in supermarkets, current one is, I think, from Waitrose. It's got tangerine or something in it but I'm finding it better than some of the others I've tried.

I use mitchum but since the start of lockdown we have been unable to get hold of the exact one I use. Finally four (?) months since then, I'm using the mitchum 'unscented' (my arse) roll on. I can't tolerate the other scents.

I still have to shower more often. I've started dieting again to try and help myself to not trap sweat and odor in my flab folds.

I've not come across Odaban and must look again.

Secret Clinical strength!!

I got it in Vegas and it was the most amazing deodorant I ever used. You can't get it here (that I know of) but I purchase on amazing.

40 degrees and I didn't even begin to sweat.. Mitchum, sure in boxes, dove in boxes, men's deodorant none of them work for me!

omtotheg · 27/06/2020 23:21

*amazon (not amazing!)

midnightstar66 · 27/06/2020 23:21

There's a new 72 hour sure that's way better than Mitchum which tbh I don't rate at all. Driclor though is better again. I think you can buy it off the shelf now but I'm sure there are other over the counter products you can ask for at the pharmacy

Dustyroad63 · 27/06/2020 23:21

I make my own deodorant and find it works better than anything I've ever bought. I'm quite a sweaty type and this keeps me smelling great all day and even the next day.

1/2 cup baking soda (you can use less when starting out if it irritates you)
1/2 cup arrowroot powder (or cornstarch)
5 tbs unrefined organic coconut oil
20 drops of essential oil (I use lemon and tangerine mostly)

Melt the coconut oil in a dish placed over a pan of hot water then add rest of ingredients. Pour into a mixer. Blitz until all mixed together.
Place in a lidded glass jar then put in fridge to solidify.
I use a pea sized amount under each arm.
Obviously in this heat it liquifies a bit but still works fine or keep in fridge.
It sounds a faff but it really works and lasts ages.

Only trouble is I've given it to family members and they love it so I have to make it for them now as well as my own!

Before I started using this I detoxed my armpits with betonite clay and apple cider vinegar at home. Mix together and apply under arms for 20 mins.

mummy2oneandtwo · 27/06/2020 23:24

Another vote for perspirex, I have over active sweat glands on just one armpit, so while
My right side is fine, my left one can get soaking wet for no reason at all. Found perspirex the only thing that blocks the glands and stops the sweating. Definitely do not use after shaving....ouch!

FortyFacedFuckers · 27/06/2020 23:24

100% agree with soap instead of shower gel & driclor

Spanielmadness · 27/06/2020 23:25

@LegitSnack any soap bar will do. I use the basic ones from Morrison’s sold in packs of four.

cretelover · 27/06/2020 23:28

I found I would smell within minutes of putting a shirt on until I soaked the underarm ( of the shirt) in white vinegar before putting in the washing machine. Helped a lot.

Chocolatebrownielove · 27/06/2020 23:37

I was prescribed anhydrol forte by the doctor and it's great. You can buy it so don't need a prescription.

MrsSchadenfreude · 27/06/2020 23:44

Wash your armpits with Hibiscrub.

rosiejaune · 27/06/2020 23:49

We are supposed to have ammonia oxidising bacteria living in our armpits which consume the compounds causing the smell.

But soap and other toiletries and chlorinated water (i.e. modern living) kill them. And because they are slow to reproduce, other strains of bacteria then take over and cause the smell. The ones you want are soil-based organisms, so you would get them on your skin from bathing in natural bodies of fresh water.

I don't use any toiletries apart from deodorant. The one I use is Ben & Anna (a bicarb based stick). It works very well.

MoreSchnitzelPlease · 27/06/2020 23:59

I used Drichlor for a while when I was a late teenager, but for some reason it stopped being effective for me. I've been using Anyhdrol Forte for a few years and it does help.

To get unpleasant smells out of clothes, spray white vinegar on to the armpits and then wash as normal. You can get a 500ml bottle of white vinegar for about 50p, and it really does help. It works on smelly sports clothes as well.

MoreSchnitzelPlease · 28/06/2020 00:02

Just to add in case it wasn't clear, spray the clothes with white vinegar before putting in the wash, and then wash the clothes as normal in a machine. The clothes won't smell of vinegar once they've been washed.

Argggghhneedclarity · 28/06/2020 00:04

I used to have problems with underarm odour/ sweat. I found once I relaxed my shaving regime and let nature do its thing a bit more, that really helped. Also use sanex roll- on and that worked- no smelly pits here. Sprays don't work for me.

MCbatcommander · 28/06/2020 00:24

I have had major problems for years- It’s mostly smell, I can cope with damp to a certain point. I’m talking the kind of pits that can still stink of BO after a shower (soap first, then shower gel, scrub with a flannel, Soap and shave, then sniff them, sigh, scrub With soap and flannel again and Give up because there is still a whiff and I’m bored and risking being late for work!)
The main things that helped me were / are:
*Washing tops at 40 degrees minimum and not using fabric conditioner (holds in the stink somehow)
*Spraying/ soaking the pit areas in vinegar before washing - works best if you do this from when new rather than once the stench sets in
*Getting clothes dry as quickly as possible
*Using tissue/cut up panty liner inside of my pits/sleeves on a hot day and changing regularly
*Driclor during a particularly bad sweating spell
*Dabbing with tea tree oil before applying antiperspirant (when I’d abandoned Driclor due to irritation)

This is the gross one. I found that a lot of the smell is due to plugs of - I don’t know what, old deodorant or just old sweat build up - actually in my arm pit pores. Whatever it is, it REEKS. Every so often I use a blackhead remover and scrape over my armpits and I get all sorts of horrid smelling crap out of there. Done regularly it doesn’t totally rid the smell 100% of the time but does keep it under control and the multiple scrub routine (as above) has half a chance of working

I don’t smell as sweet as some people but better than it could be without all the malarkey.

goingoverground · 28/06/2020 00:36

Antiperspirant doesn't work properly if you apply it to damp skin or sweat before it is dry so putting it on after a shower in a steamy bathroom when you are hot from the shower could be exacerbating the problem. It works by blocking the sweat glands but if you are sweating it when you put it on it washes it out before it gets chance to dry. If you shower/bathe at night when your sweat glands are less active, towel dry, then wait 10 minutes for your skin to cool off and thoroughly air dry it will work better. You could even try drying the skin with a quick blast of cold air from a hairdryer before applying then again afterwards to speed up drying the antiperspirant before you start to sweat again.

The bacteria that cause the smell can build up on clothes too if you aren't washing them at a high enough temperature to kill them. Have you tried Halo sports wash? Or a 60 degree wash for anything that can stand it.

Shoppingwithmother · 28/06/2020 00:51

Driclor is great (or Perspirex) as people have said.

As PP have also said, it can sting a lot. A couple of tips to reduce this:

1: make sure your armpits are completely dry before applying - you can even use a hairdryer on cool setting to do this.

2: I have found it is much more comfortable when you have put it on if you have fabric covering your armpits ie wear a top with sleeves and not a vest. If you have bare armpits where the skin in the fold is touching it hurts a lot more.

It only really stings the first time you use it though, and gets less each time. Also you have to use it less be less frequently as time goes on.

heartyrebel · 28/06/2020 01:39

Another one for driclor . I cant buy it where I live and I'm devastated as I've run out. It builds up so I only had to use it about once a month. It can be unbearably itchy to the point I got out of bed to wash it off but it works so well. I do find I sweat more in the groin area though. So I guess that sweat still has to leave your body

littlenickyy61 · 28/06/2020 01:57

sweatguard.co.uk/
this stuff is a lifesaver highly recommend

Nat6999 · 28/06/2020 02:00

Try Mitchum ultimate cream clean control, it's a 48 hour antiperspirant. It's so good I only need to apply it every other day, also good for chub rub & under boob sweating.

EmperorCovidula · 28/06/2020 02:03

Do you use vinegar on your clothes? It will get rid of the smell and stains when you wash it. You can also use sanitary pads to soak up the excess under arms when you’re at work although cotton pads will work better if you have the time to make some but might be difficult to secure. Wearing natural fibres where possible will help as well.

Aquamarine1029 · 28/06/2020 02:04

You need botox. I would stop wasting time trying every product under the sun.
