To not understand what brits call good weather?

Beatrixpotterspencil · 27/06/2020 14:41

Usually it’s humid, really clammy, and often just a bit too hot.
So difficult to be active, feel refreshed, a lot of things.
The only thing the past weeks heat wave would be remotely good for is getting a tan/sunburn, surely?

I mean, it’s not the kind of ‘good’ weather you get in Cyprus, for example, this can just feel suffocating.
I must admit sometimes towards evening it’s quite lovely, a soft breeze, less oppressive.

Are we just a bit demented when it comes to sun, here? I know there’s a stereotype, but I do wonder why people call oppressive weather ‘beautiful’.

There a few in-betweens, so maybe people lap this up because it’s either that.....or rain.

What you think?

I love the heat. I'm convinced I have some Mediterranean blood in me. My ex husband used to call me a lizard! I love it even more now as I am usually cold and wear a long sleeved top or cardigan year round. Now I have hypothyroidism it's even worse as Dublin never really gets that hot.

Beatrixpotterspencil · 27/06/2020 16:28

Ah, the AIBU usuals all out to set wanky little bear traps, policing my every word.
My profound apologies for shortening British to Brit.
For being lightheartedly confused.
I am a scumbag of the highest order😁

Let’s cheer up a bit.

@Hollyhobbi I feel the cold more than the average person, so do like to be warm. Just not sweaty. These days for some reason the temps in winter sometimes make me feel ill. I’m sure the extremes have become more pronounced, but possibly not?
My family always harp on about the summer of 76.
Apparently I spent most of it screaming 😱 (I was 2).

Isn’t it more to do with availability of air con? I don’t like hot weather of any sort but in Greece etc bedrooms are usually air conditioned or at least designed to be cool. Ours aren’t. So hot weather feels more uncomfortable here.

On the flip side we had a horrible freezing cold holiday in Cyprus once (snow in April ) . Miserably cold and nowhere had central heating so we sat and shivered in blankets at dinner. It’s just what we are best adapted to according to the weather we normally get.

SixesAndEights · 27/06/2020 16:35

I quite like that we get occasional really hot weather. I don't particularly enjoy it myself, but I live in an area where overcast is the norm, so having blazing blue skies makes a real change.

lazylinguist · 27/06/2020 16:36

@Kaheki true, I’m in Lake District and it is always a bit fresher.

Are you sure you don't mean always a bit wetter?! I live in Cumbria too, and describing it as less humid than elsewhere in England strikes me as pretty funny tbh. We have less sun, but even when it's warm, it's probably still less likely to be dry, airy heat than elsewhere! The last couple of days have been a case in point.

JaniceWebster · 27/06/2020 16:37

what "heat wave"?

It's been nice and sunny, where on hearth in Cyprus can you be if you are not used to a bit of higher temperatures.

The problem of this country is that nice days don't last, so you don't have time to get used to them. Local people were faffing with fans and air con around here this week, they could just have kept their windows opened at night, it really wasn't "hot".

DopamineHits · 27/06/2020 16:38

I am just patiently waiting for autumn.

Ginfordinner · 27/06/2020 16:46

I think it depends on the individual, and where they live. I tolerate heat pretty well, and feel the cold. I also suffer from SAD in winter and have terrible eyesight. I live on the edge of the Pennines, and we often have dull, grey, damp weather when everyone else is enjoying sunshine.

As a result, I have loved the weather we have recently enjoyed. That said, 27 degrees in breezy, rural sunshine which is what we get is not the same as 27 degrees in a big city, whch seems to be what most mumsnetters get.

However, I understand that not everyone does enjoy hot weather. Living in a south facing flat in London with no outdoor space must be hellish when it is 30 degrees.

Whenever there are threads about weather on mumsnet it would be helpful to state where you live (just the general area) because often someone will complain about the heat and then get "what heat?" replies from posters in Manchester/Newcastle/Glasgow etc.

Today, for example, in South Yorkshire it is very windy, mostly cloudy and 19 degrees. We have had a few rain showers.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 27/06/2020 16:47

It cannot get too hot for me. The only time I have conceded that it might, just possibly, be a bit too warm, was in the Australian desert in December.

I loathe the cold - and I get cold at anything under 22 degrees. It needs to be over 25 degrees for me to be comfortable. So yes, to me this weeks sadly departed heat wave was beautiful weather!

I don't really belong in Britain, even though I am British. Wish I could persuade we should emigrate...Sad

WaffleCash · 27/06/2020 16:48

I come from a country where heat waves are 105+ with 90% humidity.

I lived in Missouri for a few years which can have weather similar to the above, so 80 degrees and 80% humidity is beautiful in comparison.

WaffleCash · 27/06/2020 16:50

Sounds like me @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal I admit that Death Valley was perhaps a bit hotter than was comfortable

raspran · 27/06/2020 16:51

Any time when it isn't raining?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 27/06/2020 16:55

@WaffleCash: Greetings to my fellow Lizard-person! Grin

Binterested · 27/06/2020 16:55

God it was hot here in London this week. Too hot to go out hot. My bedroom stayed above 25 degrees all night.

Laiste · 27/06/2020 17:00

@WorraLiberty I agree. It's not different sunshine it's what you're doing in it.

In egypt a couple of years ago it was 110 in the shade every day. At one point i uttered the unforgettable words: ''I don't know what the fuss is y'know. I'm totally fine with the heat nowadays''. Twat! At this point i'd spent the last 2 weeks up to my chin in an outdoor pool, in the shade, with a long drink in my hand and had done nothing except stroll between the restaurant the pool and my bed. Fast forward to me almost fainting while waiting in the queue at my local Tesco this Thursday Hmm ''Fine with the heat nowadays'' my arse Grin

hellotoday27 · 27/06/2020 17:01

I love the hot weather in the UK when its high 20's or low 30's especially if I'm not at work. Its the only time we can really have the paddling pool out as its actually warm enough and i enjoy sitting out until quite late in evening when its still lovely and warm.

Generally find a nice shady spot and enjoy reading a book whilst the kids play in the pool. Perfect

If I'm at work .. not so keen.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/06/2020 17:05

😂😂😂
Some people really do need to learn the real meaning of ‘humid’ - preferably by visiting one of the many places where it really does mean having to wring your shirt out when you’ve been outside for 5 minutes.

Then they might stop moaning about the amateurish little apology for humidity we get here occasionally.

LolaSmiles · 27/06/2020 17:06

I think the recent hot weather has been beautiful. It's been hotter than my preference, but I can't stand people moaning about the weather.

Because I don't like it very hot, I sat in the shade with DC late afternoon when it cooled down instead of being out all day in the paddling pool (mad dogs and Englishmen come to mind at times). It was great.

UltimateWednesday · 27/06/2020 17:11

Good weather for me, is when we get unseasonably warm weather in Spring, like we had for most of March, April and May this year. And summer days like today, when it's a bit overcast but still pleasant to be out in shorts.

LadyLindaT · 27/06/2020 17:13

My partner, who is very fair, thought that he hated the heat, and for a long time I worried how we would cope going on "foreign" holidays.
It turned out that he absolutely blossoms in the heat, and it's just humidity that makes him miserable.
I can can never get excited about hot temperatures in the UK, as it usually also means high levels of humidity until broken by the inevitable thunderstorm.

JacobReesMogadishu · 27/06/2020 17:15

I’ve found the weather far more humid in the Far East and Central America. nowhere near as clammy here.

EmbarrassedUser · 27/06/2020 17:16

I agree @Beatrixpotterspencil It was gorgeous on Thursday from about 7pm as we went for a walk and it was starting to cool down. However, all of the day and yesterday I was starting to feel faint in the office as it was so hot and humid. I was horribly sweaty too, not pleasant 😔

amusedtodeath1 · 27/06/2020 17:16

Whatever you do OP do not go to Florida in the summer. Angry (not anger(

ProfessionalWeirdo · 27/06/2020 17:26

I love the heat, but I find the humidity exhausting. Where my mum lives, in Australia, the daytime temperature is typically in the mid to high 30s most of the time, but it's a nice dry heat so doesn't feel nearly as oppressive.
