The "National Garden" is where Scrotus is going to put all those Confederate and racist statues that are being torn down.

Not sure this was covered here, but the VOA is now a Trump propaganda machine, ie "State sponsored radio". It's now being run by a friend of Steve Bannon and other members of the 'gang'. I know this is a Fox link, but it does spell it out in plain English. This is HUGE news that was barely reported on here. It should be causing a major uprising by the MSM. But again, Scrotus' 'antics' in the days following have once again redirected their attention.

www.foxnews.com/politics/new-trump-appointee-dismisses-top-leadership-in-shake-up-of-broadcasting-agency

VOA is (was) the home of 'Radio Free Europe', 'Radio Marti', and other international pro-Democracy stations. It has a history of being un-biased in its reporting, reporting news that is critical of the US as well as positive. It is (was) an extremely important news site for those in countries whose news is censored or state run.

AcrossthePond55 · 05/07/2020 16:05

lion

If this (Seattle) is the one I'm thinking of, that driver intentionally plowed into the protesters on the interstate, it was pretty obvious from the footage shown on the news.

And as far as the 'new WH message', I'd rather 'live with' CV-19 than continue to live with Scrotus as POTUS. I can take precautions against the virus and seek help if I become ill. Can't do either of those against Scrotus. But I can VOTE and the election is now less than 4 months away.

As far as Kanye goes, that gets a big yawn and a 'whatever' from me. It's a publicity stunt as he's been out of the news lately.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 05/07/2020 16:06

To be fair, @AcrossthePond55, whenever I've listened to VoA in recent years it has sounded like the propaganda machine for the US government, and far more biased than it used to be. The same has happened to the "impartial" BBC World Service radio and the Beeb itself, as the political world has moved further to the right over the past few decades, it seems to me. Sad
(Totally irrelevant, but I have just remembered my mother used to read out the coded messages for the Resistance fighters in France during WWII, as one of her first jobs in the now long defunct French Section of the BBC World Service. Later on, she was the voice of the Queen in French on Christmas Day.)

AcrossthePond55 · 05/07/2020 17:12

OMG Jai, your mother should write a book!!! I'll bet she tells some fabulous stories. If nothing else, maybe there's an oral history project somewhere that would 'capture' her stories for future generations.

I have to admit I've never listened to VoA. I remember learning about it in (US) grammar & high school as an 'anti-communist' tool. This was during the Cold War.

My mother died in 2012, @AcrossthePond55, but a few years before that, she was recorded for posterity talking about her war-time experiences at Bush House. You can hear her here, if you're interested (she was Bridget Searle for her career).

AcrossthePond55 · 05/07/2020 17:36

Oh gosh, sorry I didn't realize. But I'm so glad her story got told.

My Dad served in the Pacific and told us tales of the fight for the Marshall Islands and his time in Hawaii, but only the family knows those stories. He passed away in 1999 and there just wasn't the interest in WWII oral histories then.

And thanks for the link. I will check it out.

TheSparklyPussycat · 05/07/2020 17:46

I'm an English child of the fifties, and I'm sure I knew about VoA, maybe even before my teens - never listened to it of course. I am not alone in remembering lieing on bed, fearful that The Bomb would go off in the night.
England still looked back to WW II, and people still remembered Lord Hawhaw, an Englishman who broadcast from Germany to reduce morale.

Your mother was so cool Jai Star

TheSparklyPussycat · 05/07/2020 17:48

*on = in

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 05/07/2020 17:50

You weren't to know, AcrossthePond55, she lived to a ripe old age and had vascular dementia towards the end, but had mostly enjoyed her life. I must say, before you mentioned your father, I knew nothing of the fight for the Marshall Islands. My own (French) father was in the Resistance and told us very little about wartime France. Don't think he enjoyed it much, as he was a conscientious objector at heart.

Sorry for the slight derailment of the thread. But I was just thinking how nice and unlike Trump it was to be reading about someone like your father fighting for his country (no bone spurs), for a change, @AcrossthePond55 Grin

TheSparklyPussycat · 05/07/2020 17:50

My Dad wrote a very good memoir of his time in the army from start to finish. He was a desert rat and fought at El Alamain.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 05/07/2020 18:10

Now, desert rats and El Alamain I have heard of, @TheSparklyPussycat. Such a different world from nowadays. Very hard to imagine, particularly with some people likening Coronavirus to war.

Have you seen this Washington Post article about Trump sowing division by turning Americans against Americans? Pah.

What wonderful stories about parents on here. Really impressive.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 05/07/2020 19:33

Jaichangecentfoisdenom what an amazing story - a film needs to be made!
A similar age here. My DF served in the Royal Navy (late WW2) mostly in the Mediterranean I think. My DM signed up at 18 and was in the WAAF - involved in communications for DDay (very minor role!)
How they would have hated Trump!

"The Greatest Generation" to be sure. Our parents faced things during the War that are unimaginable to us. Especially those with parents who lived in the UK and other countries directly impacted by the War. My mum told stories, but she was 'Stateside' so they were mostly about wartime rationing and meeting 'GIs' at USO Canteens. Oh, and about leg makeup and using grease pencils to draw lines up the back of their legs so it'd look like they had stockings on! She said my Gran wanted to KILL because the leg makeup was just about impossible to get out of the sheets!

If any of you want a good read, do read "The Greatest Generation" by Tom Brokaw. Of course it's 'US-centric'.

lionheart · 05/07/2020 20:09

I will look out for that.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 05/07/2020 20:18

A top health official from US president Donald Trump’s administration said on Sunday it was not clear whether it will be safe to hold the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville next month, as Florida sees record numbers of coronavirus cases.

Stephen Hahn, the Food and Drug Administration commissioner, also refused to confirm president Trump’s claim that 99% of coronavirus cases were harmless and called the situation a “serious problem.”

With record numbers of people testing positive for the virus in Jacksonville and across Florida, Hahn was asked if it would be safe to hold the typically large RNC gathering in just seven weeks.

“I think it’s too early to tell,” Hahn said on CNN’s “State of the Union” program, Reuters reports.

“We will have to see how this unfolds in Florida and elsewhere around the country.”

The Republican Party moved most of the convention activities to Jacksonville from Charlotte after a battle over coronavirus safety concerns with North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, a Democrat.

Jacksonville, led by Republican mayor Lenny Curry, began requiring masks in public last week after cases continued to rise.

My dad was a surgeon lieutenant in the Navy during WW2, served in the Med on the Alexandria convoys and was involved in the battle of Crete and the D day landings. He was sunk three times and had to swim for it.
I still have his medical kit, a canvas roll complete with unbroken glass phials containing sterile needles and catgut.
My parents thought that the world would steadily get better after the ordeals of the war. I’m almost relieved they didn’t live to see what it’s like today.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 05/07/2020 20:32

DH and DC are eligible to vote in NH - DH's last registered address in the US. Sorry Poopface Donny, but I have it on good authority that you ain't getting their vote...

Donald Trump will reportedly hold an outdoor rally in New Hampshire on Saturday, lending support to the theory his campaign has increasingly seen the New England state as crucial in the president’s reelection bid.

Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, and New Hampshire’s four electoral votes, by a narrower-than-expected 0.6% margin in the 2016 general election.

One unnamed Trump adviser teased the campaign’s tactics, telling Politico that a win in New Hampshire combined with either Nevada or New Mexico (where Trump has also devoted significant resources), would create a path to victory even if Biden wins big in the Rust Belt.

“We don’t need 306,” the person said. “We just need 270. We can lose Michigan and lose Pennsylvania and still win.”

New Hampshire's 4, Nevada's 6, and/or New Mexico's 5 will get him the win? I admit I don't fully understand the dynamics behind 'swing states', 'major states', and the strategies formulated for what states to campaign heavily in, but I've never heard of any of those 3 states being specifically 'important' to a win. 🤷🏼‍♀️

But 'whatevs', do your thang Donnie-boy.

Anyone else thinking of the movie Independence Day and wishing the aliens would blow up the WH and occupants on the 4th of July for a change? As a favour.
No? Just me?

lionheart · 06/07/2020 01:51

Not just you. Smile

lionheart · 06/07/2020 02:21

Seems an age ago but here's something on the unredacted, or less redacted Mueller report.

www.lawfareblog.com/whats-new-unredacted-mueller-report

Lweji · 06/07/2020 08:54

In short

"Trump had direct knowledge of Roger Stone’s outreach to WikiLeaks, according to multiple witnesses interviewed by Mueller. He encouraged that outreach and asked his campaign chairman to pursue it further, those witnesses said. And Mueller’s office appears to have strongly suspected, without putting it in so many words, that Trump lied to the special counsel in his written answers to Mueller’s questions about the Stone affair."

Although, his electorate doesn't care.
His incompetence and recklessness with covid, along with the economic implications, will probably be his undoing. I hope.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/07/2020 09:52

The thing I have always wondered is, "What did Assange think was in it for Assange?"

He will not have acted as he did without a motive; and he has not as far as I can see benefited at all. So what was he promised?

lionheart · 06/07/2020 13:30

Will we ever find out?
