To think bidets should be removed?

Elouera · 24/06/2020 12:37

If you were renovating a large, 1940's home, would you replace the bidets when modernising the bathrooms?

YABU- replace with modern ones
YANBU- remove them altogether

A couple of PPs have already commented on the fact some of Italians think we are gross not having bidets.

Yep. Used to have an Italian boyfriend who thinks us Brits are gross not to have bidets

HappyStar56 · 24/06/2020 23:59

I hate bidets! In France they seem to have that set up you’re referring to with the bidet in main bathroom and the toilet in a different room alone. I really don’t like a bathroom without a toilet.

CarlaH · 25/06/2020 09:52

So do these Japanese ones heat the water before delivery then?

Sorry to keep banging on about this but I want to know?

Micsam89 · 25/06/2020 11:35

Is this a mostly European thing? I thought I'd never seen one, but I'm in Australia. I actually had to google to see what they were and used for. A bit embarrassing, but when I travelled UK and Europe 12 years ago, I stupidly thought the few bidets I did see were urinals for men Blush whoops!

Most of the houses in Australia (well any I've seen) have a separate toilet room to the actual bathroom and there would be no room for an additional fixture.

Yes, mine has adjustable temperature.

nomorelove · 25/06/2020 21:07

But unless you use soap or shower gel with the bidet you're no cleaner than you would be with the loo roll only option. You're just damper.

The water flushes and rinses everything out . Have you really never washed there with water?

Smallgoon · 25/06/2020 21:47

Is this poster actually arguing that wiping with a tissue is akin to being sprayed with water?

Pipandmum · 25/06/2020 21:49

My friend said her bidet was a life safer after she had stitches after she gave birth.
If you use it keep it, if not, get rid.

Ontheboardwalk · 25/06/2020 21:59

I don’t understand how you use a bidet

I might google but am scared of the responses I'll get back

Smallgoon · 25/06/2020 21:59

@Pipandmum It is supposed to be great for people with mobility issues. I'm not sure I could ever go back after installing a bidet toilet. I read somewhere that they were definitely meant to be 'trendy' of late.

Ontheboardwalk · 25/06/2020 22:03

I did it!

Baaaahhhhh · 26/06/2020 11:34

Of course you use soap/fem wash, why wouldn't you?

To the pp oh how to use a bidet. You fill it with water and sit your bum in it, and wash it like you would in the bath or the shower. We even have special small bidet towels to dry with, imagine Grin.

Or, if you bum is hot and steamy (current weather), turn on the spray with cool water and sit on it...... ahhhhhhhh.......

rslsys · 26/06/2020 11:41

Got to have a bidet. Would have to install a proper indoor water feature to entertain the grandchildren otherwise!

EmperorCovidula · 26/06/2020 11:48

I find them really gross. I can’t say why. I was raised washing rather than just wiping for cultural reasons so it’s not like I’m not used to them but I just find them really nauseating (as do I find washing by any method other than a full shower/bath. Can’t stand it, I find it somehow unclean to only partly wash (even though I know rationally that it’s better than just wiping).

EmperorCovidula · 26/06/2020 11:49

@Baaaahhhhh I’ve never known anyone to use soap with this method.

EmperorCovidula · 26/06/2020 11:51

@Micsam89 I lived in Australia for a long time and this bidets we’re definitely a thing there in the 90s. I can’t think of a modern bathroom I’ve seen there with one though.

SimonJT · 26/06/2020 14:17

Keep the bidet or install a shattaf, if you have wee or poo on any other part of your body you wouldn’t just wipe it off with a tissue, so why is it okay to just use paper on your genitals?

JacobReesMogadishu · 26/06/2020 14:20

I've never seen a toilet with a spray hose - how does it work? Do you stay sat on the loo with one hand behind/under your bum holding the sprayer?

Alondra · 26/06/2020 14:38

Absolutely no need for a bidet. Give the space to a larger shower.

choli · 26/06/2020 15:22

Cultural differences really show in attitudes to hygiene.
RuddyP · 26/06/2020 16:35

Another vote for a bidet. You're just cleaner and it's lots easier for toilet training kids. No more horrid shit streaks in pants!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/06/2020 16:49

We have a spray or as the DC describe it -a bum shower.

Soddingsoda · 26/06/2020 17:02

My new house has a beautiful avocado bathroom suite with a bidet.

With the toilet paper storages I tried using it but just didn’t click.

It is very useful for using as a bucket when wiping down the bathroom or for throwing clothes in it to prevent them for getting wet (could use the towel rack I suppose).

Do they still sell them? I mean, when I get some savings the avocado is going.

Sailingblue · 26/06/2020 17:07

We’ve not been able to redo our bathroom but the previous owners left us a bidet. We don’t use it for its intended purpose but it’s come in handy for soaking vomit or poo stained clothes. It was particularly handy when potty training. I’ll be glad to get rid of it but it’s been surprisingly useful while the children have been small.

Elouera · 27/06/2020 18:13

Thanks for all the replies and comments. @Ontheboardwalk- the instructional video was very useful, and funny! We've likely have the space for a bidet, but the Japanese style ones seem more modern and obviously take up less space.

Ideally I'd like to try before I buy, but assume this isn't available where they are sold? It would also be a bit weird!
