To think bidets should be removed?

If you were renovating a large, 1940's home, would you replace the bidets when modernising the bathrooms?

YABU- replace with modern ones
YANBU- remove them altogether

I'd love a bidet, but it's no use in a different room than the toilet, surely? Can you knock the loo and bathroom into one, or fit a toilet in the bathroom as well?
I also have a bidet question for the bidet or bidet handset thingy users out there: Is the water warm, or do you wash your bits in cold water?

CarolVordermansArse · 24/06/2020 13:59

I miss having a bidet after several houses that had them. Useful for many things. If there was space here I would get them.

Euclid · 24/06/2020 14:05

I would keep the toilet that is in a separate room. Put a second one in the bathroom if you like. It is a real pain when the only toilet is in the bathroom and you need to go to the toilet when somebody else is having a nice long bath.

LizzieAnt · 24/06/2020 14:11

You can get electronic bidets that are basically toilet seats with a bidet function. They fit to existing toilets. They can be very useful for people with arthritis or limited movement.

littlepeas · 24/06/2020 14:16

A friend of mine, who lives in Italy, told me that the Brits are considered pretty gross for not using a bidet.....

Alexandernevermind · 24/06/2020 14:20

My children thought it was hysterical when they learned the true purpose of grandma's foot washer.

dudsville · 24/06/2020 14:29

I've never had a separate bidet but i do have the handheld ones common around europe. I can't afford the japanese toilets or I'd get one of those. We seem to be afraid of them in England but I don't understand why, especially on MN where cleanliness is a popular topic. Wiping Envy (not envy) is simply not good enough. If you had some unhygienic mess on your knee, for instance, would you think it was enough to use tissue to wipe it off? Of course not!

EBearhug · 24/06/2020 14:30

Depends partly on the space, but assuming there is space, then I'd keep it.

TooTiredTodayOk · 24/06/2020 14:31

I'd upgrade to a Japanese toilet.

Otherwise I'd keep the bidet.

I wasn't panic buying toilet roll a few months ago.

Heidihoo · 24/06/2020 14:34

Spray hoses are amazing, I have one in my house, but I live in ME where they're common.

Bidets can be very useful - did an emergency thaw of my (plastic wrapped) Christmas turkey one year Grin

CaraDune · 24/06/2020 14:38

I bloody love bidets - but the situation you describe OP (bidet in a different room from the toilet) sounds pointless and I'd take it out in that situation.

peppersaunt · 24/06/2020 14:45

My bidet is very convenient for hand washing (just to be clear I don’t also use it for its intended purposeConfused)

peppersaunt · 24/06/2020 14:45

That’s hand washing smalls, etc

flirtygirl · 24/06/2020 14:46

We have handheld douche taps fitted to every bathroom. I don't mind bidets but not if the bathroom was small.

Handheld douche tap or posh all singing growler are the way to go.

PopsicleHustler · 24/06/2020 14:52

@INeedNewShoes hi there, actually the Spanish got the idea of a bidet from the Arabs. The Arabs used bidets to wash after using the toilet. In the Islamic religion, hygiene is extremely important. After you use the toilet you have to wash thoroughly. The bidet is there primarily for that. It wasn't invented to wash your private area if you don't want to use the shower or bath.
Muslims are taught to be pure and wash straight after a toilet.

WE don't have a bidet. We wash with a jug after the toilet while sitting down on it. It's so much better and fresher than using toilet roll which to be honest just smears urine and doesn't really get rid of all germs after a number 2!

Baaaahhhhh · 24/06/2020 14:52

I would remove. I find them gross tbh

Eh? They are the very opposite of gross. They make your bottom clean and sparkly Grin. Nothing nicer than a cool spray of water on your bits on a hot day.

I would love to have the space for a bidet. My Italian DM's biggest grip is the lack of bidets in the UK. She thinks THAT is gross.

Baaaahhhhh · 24/06/2020 14:53

that should be gripe..... not grip !

Elouera · 24/06/2020 14:57

The bathroom is very large, with a shower, bath, the bidet, hand basin and enough space to have a toilet in there also. I just don't know why they put the toilet in a separate room? I never thought to defrost a turkey in it!!! Confused

Yes, we do plan to remodel the rooms around.

@PopsicleHustler

This is really interesting. I wonder why on earth they were often installed in bathrooms separate to the loo when they became popular over here.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 24/06/2020 15:08

I would love a bidet. So much cleaner than rubbing a bit of paper over yourself.

Nofunkingworriesmate · 24/06/2020 15:08

How do you use a bidet? Facing wall wash bum with hands?
Why can't you do this over bath

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/06/2020 15:09

I love my japanese toilet. Having said that I also miss my bidet which is a different sort of wash.

ihatethecold · 24/06/2020 15:13

those with a hose by a toilet, how do you dry yourself after? Ive seen them in public toilets abroad and couldn't work out the logistics.

motherheroic · 24/06/2020 15:14

Bidets are superior. Don't see how people find them 'gross'. Dry wiping your butt with tissue is what's really gross.

TooTiredTodayOk · 24/06/2020 15:14

Why can't you do this over bath

Because then you have to clean the bath, rather than cleaning the much smaller bidet.
